More Reviews of good food at Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant (Joo Chiat)

This place was recommended by one of my foodie friends! While I don’t particularly like steamboat, I found myself really enjoying the food at this one, as the soup base (signature soup base) was tasty, the service was good, and the food we ordered came fairly quickly.

Would recommend this place; the prices were still fairly reasonable although just a little bit to the expensive side - we spent about $50/pax.

My family’s favourite place for steamboat! We usually get the fish porridge, which is so generous in sliced fish serving!

✔️Super tasty home-made broth
✔️Good quality ingredients - they hand make a number of ingredients there right at the store (sometimes you’ll get to see them making), love the fish and meat balls and various pastes (fish/prawn/etc)
✔️ Cooked food is good too, we love the fried brinjal here!

The downside is the food is pretty expensive! But we end up still coming back all the time because the food quality and taste makes it really worth it. Highly recommend!!!

My rating: 5/5!!!

Very flavourful collegen shark bone soup base. Really one of the best soup I had fir a steamboat ever.

Ingredients very fresh.

Staff very friendly & attentive. Not very crowded during dinner time.

𝐓𝐞𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 ($𝟒𝟐 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝟒 𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬)

Tasty soup broths (shark bone and cartilage brewed soup base) and fresh ingredients (kurobuta pork, USA prime beef, prawn pastes, handmade fishballs, prawn wantons etc) are the selling points that keep the crowds coming back to this simple no frills steamboat restaurant along Joo Chiat Road (looks almost fully booked on a Sunday evening).

While I wouldn’t rate it the most budget friendly steamboat option (I prefer the prices over at 一锅 at Kallang but some compromise on the ambience needs to be made for a cheaper price of $30 per pax as its at a hawker centre), I still appreciated the interesting and unique dishes offered such as the Fish Kway Teow (fish meat in the form of noodle strands-very nice texture) and drunken prawns.

I also liked their version of prawn paste, very bouncy and fresh tasting! Tom yum soup tastes more towards Chinese and not the Thai style, but still holds some standard and kick. Basic sauces - chilli padi with light soya sauce and chicken rice ish chilli available.

Would like to try more of the other handmade items such as herh keow and meat balls in my next visit!

A great alternative to the big names, there is only one broth option here which is the TTSR Special Soup Base. Taking more than 5 hours to prepare the soup base, the restaurant uses both shark bones and cartilage; yes, imagine the collagen rich soup!

There are also tze char dishes like spinach tofu 😋 . The soup quality has been consistently good at this place. It is generally rich and naturally sweet without being salty 😋. .

First of all it's has a very flavorful taste to the soup yet not too heavy. I was told it is brewed using sharks cartilage and pork bones and of coz some special ingredients. 👍👍👍 Being a traditional teochew restaraunt, they use a lot of fish! Fishball, fish dumplings , prawn paste etc . All are freshly hand made. One special item was using fish paste to make into kueh tiao , it was a first for me.

They have a motto in the shop , 不好吃,不收钱!#LovetoEattheMost

The way I see it, this is a steamboat place where you go specifically for their soup, of which there is one and only one type. It is written in the menu that the Teochew owner's recipe for the soup has chicken and shark bones boiled together with other high quality ingredients for over 5 hours. I guess that's how the milky-white soup has so much natural sweetness.
This place also lavishes a lot of attention on the items to be cooked in the soup. I never miss out of ordering these hand-made signatures of theirs: Pork Dumplings, Special Squid Paste and Fish Kway Teow.

And it’s Teochew steamboat. #burpple #steamboat #foodporn #foodphotography

Seriously, I wonder how does the restaurant justify what is “不好吃”🤔 I like their old school kinda pomfret steamboat there though 🤞🏻 .
