Una Una is a new Japanese unagi restaurant in Bugis+ that sells one of the cheapest hitsumabushi in Singapore at just S$9.80.

By “double”, the waitress clarified that it referred to the same regular portion of rice, but with an additional portion of their grilled eel.

As many would vouch for their affordable price of S$19.80, the Double Hitsumabushi was Ramen Champion’s version of a Unagi meal, with succulent eel meat grilled carefully by their chef behind a glass window, and then dipped into the Unagi sauce before a final grill. The usual condiments, including bottles of Unagi sauce and spice powder on the table, added more layers of flavour to this delight.

On the other hand, I did not favour their slightly marshy rice and the lack of smokiness and crisp of the star of the dish, the latter perhaps a result of insufficient grilling over a flame which I thought lacked strength. I did wish for a richer Dashi stock for the pour-over, but that loss of flavour might be compensated with the condiments served alongside.

I would be convinced that Una Una was a place for entry-level Hitsumabushi for those who loved to “eat snake”. Perhaps some of the existing eel specialty restaurants had already raised the bar quite high, that the best reason to come back here for this dish was simply for wallet-friendly Unagi, with other expectations marked down.

Una Una is the latest unagi hotspot in town, offering the most affordable charcoal-grilled Unagi Hitsumabushi (prices start from $9.80) in Singapore.

Being a foodie and a huge unagi fan, i braved the almost 1 hour queue and got myself the Double Hitsumabushi.

Verdict: This was certainly worth the hype. The grilled unagi was fresh and very tender, slathered with the unagi sauce that was sweet and savoury. My only gripe was that the portion could have been a little more generous, but that’s because i’m a big eater. That said, if they can maintain their standards, they would definitely give their famous competitors a run for their money.

The unagi was really yummy, however it was slightly lacking in the amount of meat of the unagi itself. It was rather thin so it didn’t felt like I actually ate much meat if that makes any sense? 🤷🏻‍♀️ However, taking into consideration the affordability of this - the thin unagi is justifiable 🤣

The soup was seaweed + a tinge of yuzu. That was a shocking combination but nonetheless was rather refreshing. Still, I do prefer yuzu in drinks instead 😂
On a side note, a basic miso soup might have paired better with the unagi.

Overall, recommended to try!

the portion of unagi given was really substantial and there was a nice grilled flavour to the slightly charred bits to the unagi. the rice was coated in the unagi glaze which made the whole combi even tastier, while the dashi stock served at the side was refreshing and light. each component in the hitsumabushi complemented one another well. really tasty although i'd hope for a stronger grilled flavour. however, as someone who hasn't been able to eat at man man because of their prices, i find una una really value for money given its convenient location and for the lovely dining environment. would 10/10 visit this place again!

Unagi Omelette ($9.8)
Don't judge a food by its appearance.
It was so amazingly good that we ordered another serving.
