Before you fend off these egg tarts as another gimmicky snack (it doesn't even have a flowy centre!), here's why we think you should queue for these golden yellow babies. Hailing from Hokkaido, Japan, Bake Egg Tarts ($3.50 for one, $19.50 for box of six) are called as such because of the double baking process. Unlike its other outposts in Hong Kong where you get to watch them pipe the tarts at a near-robotic speed, the tarts in Singapore have already been piped in Hokkaido before they are baked twice in the shop at ION Orchard's basement. These tarts are known for their light-as-air cheese filling, and we recommend heating them up for maximum enjoyment! Pro-tip: The snaking queues lasts for as long as three hours, so bring a book or a buddy to kill time!

Move aside Shibuya toasts, these Dutch baby pancakes are the next big thing. This Japanese-owned eatery in Paragon is still a hidden gem for many, so make a trip down soonest before the crowd comes! Best for sharing with friends, the pillowy soft pancakes with crispy edges are served with either sweet or savoury condiments. Our Burpplers recommend the Mixed Berries Pancake ($13.80), served with strawberries, blueberries, whipped cream and chocolate sauce. There are also heartier mains available, like the Crab Croquette Curry Rice ($17.80) and Eggplant Baked Cheese Curry ($13.80).

Had a rather disappointing cup of coffee earlier, this however was really good. Tiong Bahru bakery's coffee hasn't disappoint after countless of visits.
Very yummy $3 lemon chicken rice. Great portion of chicken, with real slice of lemon and side soup. Worth the queue π Location is at Tiong Bahru Market, #02-82. Burrple does not have the correct address (every time I clicked the address here, it goes to the one in New Bridge Road)
If you think that the noodles served at this stall in Kopitown Sixth Avenue very much resemble the springy wanton noodles at Crystal Jade, you're on the right track. Owner Mr Tang was formerly the head trainer at the restaurant chain, and more recently ran a stall in Chinatown. Mr Tang's noodles here are springy, the dumplings are plump and juicy, and the accompanying chilli paste packs a whole lot of punch. The icing on the cake? Prices are a fraction of what you would pay at an upmarket Cantonese noodle house β the Wanton Noodles cost only $3.50. Pro tip: According to Burpple Tastemaker Xing Wei Chua, patrons tend to order several portions at a go, so be patient.
Avg Price: $5 per person
By the same people behind Assembly Coffee comes Atlas Coffeehouse, an expansive, lofty Bukit Timah cafe decked out in marbled tiles and deep sea blue walls. Great for both quick coffee runs and long, lazy brunches, sail by for a Flat White ($4.50) and start the day with a relaxing read by the window bar. For brunch, get the ATLAS Super-Bowl ($17), a healthy yet tasty grain bowl filled with toasted quinoa, roasted squash and zucchini and tender peanut sesame pulled chicken. For more classic brunch flavours, go for the Creamy Mushrooms on Sourdough ($12) β a generous heap of mushrooms cooked with a splash of white wine and sundried tomatoes, which you must pair with the silky smooth Scrambled Eggs ($3 for add on). For dessert, we favour the Mixed Berries Compote Waffles ($12.50) over the pancakes β they are similar in taste but the former is lighter and more affordable. Pro-tip: It gets a little crowded at lunch time, so it's best to pop by around 11am.
Avg price: $25 per person

Located at Duxton Hill, MavRx (stylised with a capital R) is a small hole-in-the-wall joint that serves nothing but coffee. This minimalist, VERY Instagram-worthy shop boasts monochromatic decor and wooden benches for seats. When available, always go for the Chocolate Coffee Cone ($8) β essentially a piccolo latte in a sturdy waffle cone that you can nom on once you're done with your coffee. The chocolate coffee cone comes in three flavours β white, milk and dark chocolate. Otherwise, order the super fun Cold Brew ($5). Served in a large syringe that you can "inject" into your cup of ice, it's great for a mid-day caffeine boost or a pitstop after dining nearby!
With the title "The World's Best Coffee Shop" given by Telegraph under their belts, you bet the java at The Coffee Academics is set to impress. The highly esteemed coffee joint from Hong Kong has set up its first international outpost in Singapore, serving espresso-based coffees. There are seven specially designed corners in the spacious cafe, each with its own purpose, like Cupping Corner and Hand Brew Bar. We love the Pepper Agave Latte ($7.50) β cafe latte with raw agave nectar that cancels out the bitterness of the coffee, topped with freshly ground black pepper for that extra kick. Also worth returning for is the Globally Inspired Coffee ($8) β original creations from 12 different countries that changes every month (May's Globally Inspired Coffee is a Citrus Espressoda from Portland).
Can't resist anything Earl Grey, and I knew I had to come down to try this dish after seeing some posts circulating on Instagram about their new menu. Thought that the pancake was a little flat (could have been a little fluffier for a better texture) and the batter was a wee bit gritty inside; perhaps the batter needed a little more whisking before ending up on the pan. That being said, I must say that the pancakes indeed carried a nice hint of Earl Grey aroma upon the first bite which would satiate any Earl Grey fan out there. Coupled with White Chocolate Macadamia crumbles, it carried quite a good amount of sweetness amongst the nutty flavour, and around some spots, tasted real familiar to the crumbles from Post cereals (another favourite thing of mine). Poached pear was juicy and soft, releasing its natural sweetness on the pancakes as you cut a morsel apart, while the bottom comes coated in hardened dark chocolate. While having its own hits and misses, a pretty decadent breakfast dish that seems pretty apt even for dessert, though I do hope that they would refine the batter for an even more indulgent experience. Also spied that they have a Poke Bowl and a Braised Pork Bowl on the revamped lunch menu; guess I would be back pretty soon again!
From the good folks of Ronin, PUNCH has gained itself a reputation for their gorgeous courtyard and excellent coffee. Their filtered Batch Brew ($4.50) is brewed using a blend of Ethiopian beans, and is the perfect java fix to start the day with. Located just across from Hong Lim Park, swing by in the mornings and perch yourself on one of their wooden benches among the courtyard greenery. If you can spare more time, enjoy a simple breakfast of Poached Eggs With Smashed Avocado on Sourdough ($13).
Set in the foyer of The Working Capitol, this cosy cafe serves up crepes and coffee in a spacious, quiet environment β perfect for a light meal with a good book, a business meeting, or getting some work done. If you're here for dessert, go straight for sweet crepes like Yuzu Butter ($12), served with Yuzu-infused Bordier butter and sugar, or the Chocolate ($12), served with chocolate pearls and Valrhona chocolate sauce. For something savoury, try a galette (unlike crepes, this is made with buckwheat flour). The Smoked Salmon ($18) with Scottish smoked salmon, capers, a crumbled hardboiled egg and homemade creme fraiche is a tasty choice. The coffee (from $3.50), made with Papa Palheta coffee beans, is a good option if you're in need of a caffeine hit, but the interesting Homemade Ginger Beer with Honey ($7) with its punchy ginger flavour will instantly lift your spirits!
