After watching Burppler Jayne Tanβs IG Stories, I made a beeline for this place. That pasta needed to get in my belly!
Simply reading that Chef Kenneth Foong cooks it with a sauce of butter, fresh lemon juice and black pepper had my salivary glands cranked up and my imagination on overdrive, so much so I could almost taste it in my mouth.
So did reality match up? I would say nope.
IT EXCEEDED.
Made from scratch in-house, those broad ribbons of Pappardelle were cooked to al dente perfection. Slick and silky with the glorious butter sauce, they slipped and slided around in the plate, as though playing with the chunks of snowy-white crab meat. The spark of fresh lemon juice plus the subtle spiciness and fragrance from ground black pepper lifted the richness to a level of luscious delectability that had me squirming in pleasure.
If you have ever eaten the Spanner Crab Spaghetti at Caffe Fernet which is really good, think of this as a version of that on steroids.
Each roast chicken comes with your choice of three sauces, which includes Teriyaki Pineapple sauce, Lemongrass sauce and Japanese Curry sauce.

Been here countless of times and this is a must order. Filled with aubergines, pulled short rib, tomatoes and topped with oozy egg.
So much goodness in one bowl. Thanks haakon for providing healthier fun options. Although itβs nothing like in Hawaii but itβs the closest option we have in sg!
Don't let the pizza's peculiar look fool you.
This pizza looks extremely intriguing but yet inviting. The Pizza con Rucola Pesto is reminiscent of mealtimes I once had in Italy. Not so much of the flavour but the way it's cooked - the beautiful thin baked crust.
As for flavour, it's really bang on. The sweetness of the ricotta balances the saltiness of the mozzarella and salami. Though the green may appear overpowering but the rocket spread and pine nut pesto actually add some earthy savouriness to the pizza. What comes out is a totally addictive dish that doesn't make one "gelat". I mean, I had four slices myself. π #burpproved
I was actually dumbfounded at how good this Flank Steak ($26 per 100g) with burnt onion and bone marrow was. These delicate pieces of medium rare flank paired with the creaminess from the burnt onion sauce and bone marrow was the showstopper. Flavours were on point and the smokiness from each element made it such a gastronomical experience.

I brought along the harshest critic to this tasting - my mother. She is the best Peranakan cook I know, so if the dishes at Straitsbon were going to be "passed" by her, then clearly, they've got things right. Well, she was pretty happy with the meal overall, so that's a positive sign! π
The dish that had us raving non-stop was the "Beef Shin Rendang Tok" ($20++). Besides having a deeply aromatic "rempah", the huge chunks of meat were terrifically tender. As this choice cut of beef has a lot of connective tissue which gets broken down during cooking, what you get is a truly melt-in-the-mouth experience.
Another that we liked a lot was the "StraitsBon Kelinga Gulai Fish Head" ($28++). It's the Head Chef's specialty and is based on a recipe from the olden days of Penang. Big enough to be shared among three to four diners, this had a thick curry that's a little sweet and a little sour. I love that they cut the brinjal and tomatoes in big pieces here, so they weren't too mushy. At some places, you can hardly make out the vegetables π
The "Sambal Petai" ($16++) was the one dish we felt could be slightly improved. Although the "sambal belado" and prawns were tasty, the petai, which we guessed had been parboiled, lacked crunch and intensity of its natural flavour. When we shared our feedback with one of the owners Joey who was hosting us, he promptly tried it for himself and couldn't help but agree. He then assured us he'd inform his head chef to change the cooking method so as to ensure the petai retains its essence. I am sure we'll be enjoying the improved version on our next visit.
The majority of Straitbon's menu comprises of Peranakan dishes using traditional recipes from a true-blue Peranakan lady but they also have a few local dishes like "Har Jiong Gai" ($8++). This item is understandably popular given how the fragrant battered coating of the chicken wings stayed crunchy until the end of our meal. I highly recommend savouring them with a few ice-cold beers! π»
Although the ambience is very casual because of the eatery's location in the main lobby of the Oasis building, they do table service. During lunch, it tends to be packed with the office crowd so a good time to check it out is on weekday evenings and Sundays. They are open Sundays to Fridays from 10.30am to 9pm (closed on Saturdays).
Feel free to find out more at www.straitsbon.com
Thanks Jason, Joey and @straitsbon for hosting my parents and I.
For $9, it is a little ex for food at a coffee shop BUT not sure why I'm back here for a second time. Maybe it's because of the friendly owner or that the owner always delivers hearty colourful healthy food or I just wanna support the owner!!
12 hour stewed pulled pork with cashew yoghurt and apple slices of a bed of salad. Food cooked from the heart.

The famous Hokkien Prawn Mee in Toa Payoh Lorong 1 Market. What we saw on the plain flat plate of noodle was the result of decades of Hardwork. .

The stall owners wake up in 4 in the morning and start boiling the stock. For a good plate of hokkien Mee, the cook need to fry the minced garlic with lard then stir fried the egg and noodles. While the wok hei was formed, the stock would be rush in to bind all the flavors together.
Taken here by my local Thai friends, Jeed-Jard is a cosy eatery at JJ Market that serves up quality Isan (Northeastern Thai) dishes. My picks include the deep-fried papaya salad, grilled pork neck, deep-fried chicken hip with spicy dipping sauce, and sticky rice. Only soft drinks are available at this place β but feel free to get Thai iced tea or coffee from across the street and bring it over to enjoy with your food.
Thank you, Pumpim and Fa, for the awesome lunch treat!
Jeed-Jard is located at Section 8, Soi 17/1, Chatuchak Weekend Market.
