Every Thursday in July, Makan@Jen at Hotel Jen Orchard Gateway will be having an all-you-can-eat counter of fresh durian and durian desserts in addition to their already extensive seafood themed buffet spread. Some of the cultivars are hard-to-find including Golden Phoenix and Berkeley durians.

This modern teahouse at Pickering Street has been introducing premium Chinese tea to us in a fun and accessible way, since opening its doors last September. And now, they've introduced an ala carte dim sum buffet at a very affordable price.
🔸
Here's some items that you should order for this dim sum buffet:
* Hibiki Whiskey La Mian (max one serving) - potent broth here, even before adding the Hibiki whiskey. It is sweet and sharp due to lots of seafood and 酸菜 in it, and there's some spiciness from the use of 野山椒 as well.
* Abalone Siew Mai - an elevated version of the classic pork dumpling, topped with a plump abalone that's bigger than the siew mai itself.
* Truffle Carrot Cake - pillowy soft radish cake tossed with fried egg, chives, and truffle oil.
* Liu Sha Bao - generous flow of rich, sweet custard within deep fried mantou. Genius idea to incorporate what we love when we had chilli crabs.
🔸
And I thought, they are serving dim sum better than those served at some hotel's dim sum buffet. So it's a good deal if you don't need hotel ambience.

[Disclosure: I'm a personal friend of Mister Wu's boss]

Their Signature Berry Ball was available as part of their Christmas buffet from 22 to 24 Dec. Although the Christmas specials is over, their buffet which started on 7 Dec would be ongoing every 1st week of the month at $48+.
🔸
You know I don't do cafes often, but I have always remembered Paddy Hills for their Hei rice. And this time, I ordered 6 oysters and 4 abalones as part of their Christmas buffet. I thought it's a good way to sample as many of their signatures as possible.

🔸
There'll be over 40 Yuletide dishes for their Christmas buffet served in the opulent baroque style-dining hall, including Truffle Cheese fondue (Christmas Eve and Christmas only) and a Live Outdoor BBQ station firing up smoky grills firing up fresh Japanese Scallop with Mentaiko among a variety of meats, while Christmas Eve and Day dinner takes the celebration a notch higher with Tandoori Chicken Kebab and Mini Crayfish with Homemade Spices on the grill.
🔸
There're also 7-Spices Turkey with Homemade Chilli Sauce which is marinated for 24 hours with 7 aromatic Peranakan spices, Port Wine Glazed Rack of Lamb, and Oven-Roasted Barramundi on Ratatouille with Champagne Sauce. For desserts, expect a parade of festive desserts including a white chocolate log cake, mini cheesecakes, and festive tartes. There's also a kids playroom for them to DIY a gingerbread man.

The Orchard Cafe, located at  @orchardhotelsingapore, is finally opening this coming Monday, 19 Nov, after a complete makeover. 🔸
And I finally tasted two of the hotel’s Executive Chef Bryce Li unique satay creations - beef tripe and duck hearts, the the former was what I told him I loved when I brought him to a stall in AMK! These are grilled over charcoal, and served with kecap manis or the classic peanut sauce with zest from pineapples. If these rare ingredients aren't for you, Chef Bryce also has a kurobuta satay that's more traditional but premium.
🔸
Besides satay, The Orchard Cafe will also be serving many classic dishes with a twist such as Braised Pork Knuckle Bee hoon (my fav! I had two servings), Tau Kwa Pau with Smoked Tea Duck, Chargrilled 5-Spice Chicken Wings and Hua Ting's famous Roast Duck served with rice.

The dinner buffet here is very affordably priced at $78++/pax (Mon to Thurs) and $88++/pax (Fri to Sun), considering these are very premium meats not typically served at buffets. The premium meats are:
* Yukimuro Snow-Aged Wagyu Beef (weekends exclusive)
* Tajima Wagyu Tri Top
* Tajima Wagyu Bolar Blade
* Tajima Wagyu Chuck Roll
* 150 Days Grain-Fed Beef City Black
* Ana Paula Black Angus
🔸
Besides beef, The Carvery’s buffet will also feature other signature roasts like the Rotisserie Chicken, salads, seafood, fish, pizza, flatbreads, charcuterie, cheeses, and more.
🔸
My suggestion: Go for the weekend buffet, cos the snow-aged wagyu is really very good. If you've already tried all the dry-aged and wet-aged steaks in the world, it's time to start trying the snow-aged wagyu.

Dinner ($83++ for dinner buffet, till 19 August only). Carousel has always been my colleague's choice destination for our company functions, since it caters to a wide range of tastes and it's halal. And now they now have two guest chefs from Royal Park Hotels Japan to dish out authentic Japanese flavours with dishes such as Ika Meshi (Boiled Squid stuffed with Rice), Umaki (Roasted Eel wrapped in Omelette) and Tai no Marine (Marinated Sea Bream). We also had several premium seafood such as otoro, lobster and king crab legs.
🔸
Besides the Japanese specials, they still have their premium homemade ice-cream counter, where there are thirteen flavours to select from, but now with three special Japan-inspired flavours – Mint Yuzu, Matcha Adzuki with Raisin, and Wasabi Cheese.
🔸
The Oishii So Japan! dinner promotion is available from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at $83++ for adults and $49++ for children.

Three of us had a blast last evening. It's either due to the unlimited cocktails by Stephan Levan, or the hula dance performances by former Miss Hawaiian Islands 2010 runner-up, Ms. Pomaikai Klein and Ms. Capella Williams (swipe to last video), with music performance by award-winning musicians, Jeff Peterson and Nathan Aweau.
🔸
And yes, there'll be unlimited grilled fresh lobsters (pictured in cover here), and that's in addition to the exciting buffet spread of Hawaiian cuisine that includes Ahi “Minute Poke”, Hoisin Glazed Pork Ribs with Guava and Apple Sauce, Hawaiian Cioppino and Lemongrass Bread with Rouille, Kahuku Prawns with Red Onion Butter, Somen Noodles, and more. It's not easy to find such Hawaiian cuisine in Singapore. And, don't miss the desserts, they were really good.
🔸
On cocktails, Stephan Levan, bar manager of Honi Honi, will be shaking up three special Hawaiian cocktails at the Luau: Kamehameha, Kahakai and Libertad, a top 8 finalist cocktail of Barcadi Legacy, bartender’s competition in 2017.
🔸
There's only two more slots left for this Hawaiian festivity - 4 August dinner and 5 August brunch. For reservations and enquiries, please call +65 6213 4398 or email dining.sls@shangri-la.com.

* Eclair with durian custard
* Scones with pistachio butter and rosemary kaya
* Fruit rojak in mini cones
* Kueh pie tie with Boston lobster

Quite worth it right? Available only weekends and PH, 3pm to 530pm, minimum two to dine.
