Teochew Porridge - good for anytime of the day!

Teo Heng Teochew Porridge has been around for many years. Their home-made fish cake has always been one of their signature dishes. They were super soft yet springy. When dipped into the chilli sauce, blended with garlic and vinegar, superb!

They are also famous for their fishes. We chose the garoupa. The fresh fish were simply dunked into a pot of boiling stock with preserved mustard/salted vegetable soup, and then served with a ladle of the salted vegetable over the fish. The fish was tender, slightly sweet and salty, just simply good with plain porridge.

Overall a nice place for a porridge with everything made from scratch, and fresh, quality food.

The aunty at the stall is really friendly &cute! My lunch kaki went to reserve the ingredients at around 11am. She heard that the dishes get sold out real fast! So we've got sotong, taupok, braised eggs, intestines, braised belly, taugwa &fish cake!

Every ingredient feels like they're homemade. The fishcake is really soft and yet BOINGBOINGG (aka QQ) 😋 The braised egg is like those japanese ramen eggs with molten centre (溏心)! Taupok is stuffed with some chopped cucumber, carrot &minced meat. The taugwa is sooooo well braised; infused with all the essence of the gravy! This is the perfect pairing with plain porridge!

All these + 2 bowls of porridge for $18. Pretty affordable i would say!

The fish was cooked in a huge pot of salted vegetable soup, then served with a generous sprinkling of salted vegetables.

In our opinion, the best hawker meal on cold, rainy days has got to be Teochew porridge, preferably with tons of side dishes, shared among our favourite makan kakis. When the weather calls for it, gather your foodie friends for a meal to remember at Teo Heng Teochew Porridge. In all honesty, every dish here hits the spot, so it's bound to be a good meal, whether you keep it simple with salted vegetables and stuffed taupok, or if you go all out and pile the table with boiled squid, oozy braised eggs and the like. Be sure to order the fish cake, which is springy yet soft, and super fresh tasting. Our Tastemakers also liked the rabbit fish, whole squid and well-braised innards. Expect to spend an average of $5 to $7 a person.

Pro tip: The stall is closed until 31 December, so come by in the new year!

Right smacked in the bustling Hong Lim Food Centre lies Teo Heng Teochew Porridge, a porridge stall that’s non-pretentious and never compromising on the taste. To make a good Teochew porridge, one does not need to use any fanciful or expensive ingredients. What’s key is the freshness of the ingredients and how each of them is able to complement with each other, while relying on the chef’s skills to execute it to perfection. One such example would be the humble preserved vegetables that lie innocently on top of a steamed fish and one might think that it doesn’t look appetising but you are in for a surprise when you dig into it.

Hong Lim Market and Food Centre is not the most cooling of locations for a hot Teochew muay lunch, but Teo Heng’s done theirs well and it’s worth the sweat. Our steamed fish was fresh and tender, topped with a great portion of salted vegetables that were not overly salty but had a good balance of sweetness. Intestines were well cleaned with a fragrant braised sauce. We also had a plate of boiled squid - fresh with a slight crunch without being rubbery and too chewy! #BurppleChinatown
