More Reviews of good food at Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice 威南记海南鸡饭 (United Square)

Type: Restaurant/Local

Visited a few days ago to bring my relatives from Malaysia! However, sad to say, the standard has dropped compared to a couple of years ago. Used to be a family favorite and we would visit every other week when I was younger at the old shophouse-style shop.

Rice: Good, very fragrant and flavorful compared to many other stores!
Sauce: Nice, goes well with rice
Chicken: Didn’t make the cut for us as the meat wasn’t that tender or flavorful.
Kangkong: Too salty, had to wash the sauce off in my soup. If the salty taste was reduced, would have been a good dish.
Roast pork: Fail… skin is not crispy AT ALL, and looks like a factory made dish?!

Overall, a disappointing experience from an old regular. Don’t think I will be revisiting if standard doesn’t improve…

My rating: 2/5 ⭐️

Founded by Wee Toon Ouut in 1987, this beloved brand is today among the most popular and accessible around, serving a good rendition along other home-style comfort food.
.
The chicken has a tender, juicy, slightly springy chew, with pleasant meaty sweet savoury flavour, enhanced with a touch of salty sweet savoury nutty notes from the gravy.
.
The poached chicken is more clean-tasting with a thin gelatinous layer beneath the slippery skin, while the equally popular roasted chicken has a faint smoky aroma and a slightly crisp skin.
.
The long-grain rice is soft and loose, gently slick but not overly greasy, with lovely grainy savoury sweet flavour. The sliced juicy cucumbers and crisp spring onions lend vegetal sweet flavour.
.
Served with dark sweet soy sauce with salty savoury sweet flavour, crushed ginger with herbal sweet spice notes, chili with spicy savoury kick, and a clear chicken broth.

👍Roast pork set (S$7.50) at Wee Nam Kee for dinner. Comes with vege and soup.

the highlight of the dish was always the rice! fluffy, fragrant and oily without being surfeiting. one of the rare times when we’ll want a second serving of carbs. the chicken was a hit or miss - there were days when it was perfectly cooked but also days when it was so dry thay we wanted to give up on it. but generally, it tasted amazing and i’m left craving for it every week. tried the pork chop this time round but it was quite disappointing. the meat was flattened and heavily battered till it was quite difficult to discern what meat we were having. guess we’ll be sticking to the chicken rice!!

Great for family dinners is this comfortable air-conditioned restaurant in United Square (or check out their other outlet in Marina Square). Not only are both the Steamed and Roasted Chicken ($16 for half, $4.80 for one portion) styles equally good, they also offer a wide range of vegetable, soup, meat and seafood dishes to complete the meal. The rice here is said to be "the best chicken rice rice" by fans, to which we'll say — there aren't many that are better.

Ordered chicken rice for $4.8 (excluded GST). It is good. They provide wet towel and you need to pay for $0.2. If you don’t want to use it, you can give it back to the cashier so they won’t charge you.

We did a takeaway and I loved how the chicken rice was in that old school packet takeaway! The half chicken ($16) was pretty reasonable and was plump, juicy and very tasty!! Loved the generous sauces -The chilli was good and not extremely spicy too. & whats chicken rice without the ginger shavings! Yum! We had the tofu dish($10) and it was not bad but not the best we had.

A dish of poached chicken with rice, chili sauce and garnishes. A popular dish adored by many in Singapore! It is a comfort food for many of us as well.

Featuring the Hainanese Chicken Rice from Wee Nam Kee United Square. @weenamkee_sg Unfortunately we didn't get to try other flavours as they were sold out. The Poached chicken was tender. Will be nicer if the chicken was warm. The Wee Nam Kee at United Square was quite spacious but aircon was a bit too cold for me. Nothing to shout about for the other dishes - Hot Plate Bean Curd And Stir Fried Spinach.

I love the chicken here! Soft, plump and juicy! Even the breast meat is tender, so thats a huge bonus!

The other zhi char dishes are decent but the chicken is really the star for me

I wonder why this place is so famous. The chicken is pretty good, but not the best Singapore can produce, and the rice is not very fragrant and just average. Other dishes we had (tofu, salted egg prawns, kang kong) were quite meh.

They serve food real fast. Portions of liver and gizzard were pathetic. I opened my eyes to see which is which.
Service was fast too but not accurate. Took our order wrongly. But we just accepted it.

#noregrats Succulent plump chix & roasted meat 😋 The serpentine like Q was kinda worth it. Head there for TGIF or the weekend tmrw! 💕🍗🍗🍗💕🧡💛❤️✨✨✨@weenamkee_sg 🥡

Loved the chilli and chicken though wishing the rice was more fragrant!! At a restaurant but price was decently cheap. Though it was quite noisy cause there were more kids and waiters shouting across

Used to be at novena lodge I think. Eat this since young and I love it. Quite decent and generous. Rice could be more fragrant...chicken fats got jelly one, super sinful haha. Ordered half chicken ($16) and requested for half “white” and half roasted chicken. Oyster kailan ($8), total bill was $23 nett. No service charge!

I think wee Nam Kee is definitely overrated. I won’t say it’s bad but maybe above average? I really like the dumplings 🥟 and their rice is not bad Though. 🐔#feedthetheme

We ordered the white chicken and their signature soy sauce chicken set. Both dishes has smooth and nice texture of meat. The minced ginger is not oily which to my favor. For soy sauce chicken, it does come with a slightly sweet and spice taste that make the whole dish prefect. We also ordered the dumpling soup. Yum yum, the dumplings are fat and juicy. The water chestnut added the crispy when u are eating it. Thumbs up!

Ordered chicken leg rice and a soup. The total price is around 11 and it's Super delicious. Quiet good location with it. I see other tables ordered dishes and they look also nice. Would like to try this place one more time.

I remember my first plate of chicken rice at Wee Nam Kee when the restaurant was at Novena Regency (opp Novena Church). It remains as tasty and satisfying after so many years!

The tender and moist chicken soaked in that flavoursome sauce, the spicy and shiok chilli sauce and that savoury rice well-coated with chicken oil. *drools* 😋
