It's been a while and this is still good although a tad bit too salty!
Honestly, soup was robust & tasty, but the choice of the ingredients were poor. This was the smallest portion of the seafood soup @ $6. For all the seafood soups, the fish chosen was frozen dory fish, doesn’t fit the soup well. Prawn was fresh and the other ingredients were ok. Ordered a seafood soup but oddly the ingredient that was the biggest part of the soup was the minced meat..... Waited at least 30 minutes for this during the lunchtime crowd & honestly it was a waste of my time. I also requested for the owner to give me extra soup, which he replied positively too. To my dismay, the soup was at HALF of the container. And the container is really small, not the usual kind, more comparable to a slightly bigger tauhuey container. Don’t think it’s worth the $6 starting price.
Might only patronise again if they change their choice of fish & if there’s no queue. If there’s a long queue in front of you, my advice would be don’t bother.
Date of visit: 14 Dec 2018, Fri (1pm)
Dish ordered: Seafood soup (Seen in picture)
Rating: 9/10
Reasons:
1) Fresh seafoods and meat from the looks of it! I didn't try the prawn, but my friend mention it was very good cause he wanted to try it more than I do haha 😆 Dory fish and the meat were both fantastic! No strong fishy and meaty taste in both of them :)
2) Rich, milky and 'concentrated' broth which gave me another reason to skip dry food more often! Not a fan of soupy dishes, but the broth has flavour in each and every sip I take which makes me alter my perspective of what a superb seafood broth should be (And Yan Ji is already etched in my mind and taste). The broth itself makes Yan Ji Seafood as having the 'most perfect broth' in Singapore, although my only wish is that they give more broth 😅
Be prepared to wait pretty long! Waiting time can be more than 30 mins during weekday lunch
Their seafood soup is the most intense I’ve tasted, in a hawker centre or otherwise. It’s concentrated with so much goodness from their specially-prepared stock base, you can barely see anything below its surface.
Into this incredible broth goes soft pieces of fish, large prawns (I had mine substituted with fish maw yesterday as I was too lazy to peel them) and hand-formed meatballs (my favourite) which can only be described as “ugly delicious”. These misshapen lumps are fresh, springy and deeply umami from the use of “ti poh” (the dried sole fish that is used frequently in Teochew cooking). I also think they taste extra shiok dipped in their very own lime-laced chilli sauce.
Our second time after the mind-blowing experience at the original Woodlands stall. Ingredients were still fine but soup was just salty compared to last time. Not sure why there's so much soup now given their philosophy of minimising it to maximise flavour. Did the more soup result in poorer taste?
First time here and I LOVE IT. Very rich soup bursting with umami without being too salty, decent portion of chunky minced meat balls and the seafood ingredients of fish and prawns are fresh, so no wonder the minimum cost of seafood soup is $6, but I think it was worth every. penny.
Very generous portion for $6, particularly loved the freshness of the prawns and the chunky minced meat balls, soup was a tad salty though
Initially, I was quite upset that they have sold out their crayfish seafood soup and decided to order their seafood soup ($6). Their seafood soup taste good as well and living to my expectation 😋. Their prawns were fresh and the owners were really generous with the portion of ingredients. Definitely a recommended stall to visit at Old Airport Road. However, do expect to queue for a while especially during peak hours. Well, good food is definitey worth to queue. 📍 Yan Ji Seafood Soup
Located at 51 Old Airport Rd, old airport road food centre, #01-122, Singapore 390051. We Q for approx 30mins and ordered a medium bowl of Seafood Soup, $8. Very generous serving of ingredients, 3 large and fresh prawns, big chunks of fresh fish that’s so soft and smooth, rounded minced meat that’s so delicious... also very rich and savoury soup broth that brings out the tasty and freshness of these seafood! The soup is very thick and good for the seafood lovers! @yanjiseafoodsoup #hungryunicornsg #yanjiseafoodsoup #yanji #oldairportroadfoodcentre #seafoodsoup
First time trying their Crayfish Seafood Soup and it taste really good! The soup is so rich with the freshness and sweetness from the seafood. The boss is rather generous with the portion of seafood served and it is definitely one of the best seafood soup which I have ever tried and I have never expect that I can find such good standard of seafood soup in a hawker centre. 📍 Old Airport Road Food Centre
So fresh. So satisfyingly good. One of the must-eats even at a place that offers much variety and quality. 😋
Heard rave reviews about Yan Ji and for a first visit, the seafood soup didn’t disappoint! Shuddered at the thought of paying $6.50 for hawker food but this treasure-filled soup is well worth the price. Quality prawns, firm, tender fish fillets and uber flavourful meatballs swimming in rich, milky white soup (although too little of it!!). Delicious ladled over white rice too.
Recommended by @veronicaphua, I have been to Old Airport Road a few times but I never walked past this stall and its a pity I have not found this amazing place before.
The soup is slightly milky and full of umami and meatballs with some crunchy bits. The fish slices were generous and chunky. The $8 bowl also comes with 3 jumbo prawns. Overall the freshness of the seafood in this bowl stands out, along with the tasty soup, makes this a really good bowl of soup to go for.
Very different from other seafood soup that I’ve tasted. This $6 bowl comes with 2 big prawns, a couple of minced pork balls and some slices of fish. I regretted not getting a bigger bowl. One of the few must-order dishes in Old Airport Road.
Because #goodfoodmustshare, let me introduce you to this decadent bowl of goodness. It comes with red garoupa fish and flesh, crayfish, prawns and huge, housemade meat patties. Of course, it contains the same superbly sweet and tasty soup that “Yan Ji” is famous for.
What I am also impressed by is that the team prides themselves on cooking each order as perfectly as possible, regardless if it’s a $6 bowl or this $15 one. So please be prepared to wait a bit if you see a long queue in front of the stall.

Have you ever been caught out without cash at a hawker centre? I have. And because there was no ATM machines nearby, I ended up dining at a restaurant that accepted credit cards. Which didn’t exactly satisfy my hawker food craving! 😕
Recently however, I learned that you can now use the DBS PayLah! app at hawker stalls that display the DBS PayLah! and NETS QR code signages. One quick scan and payment is made. Beats digging for dollars and coins from the wallet for sure 😄
The perpetual queue in front of this stall is a testament to the goodness of their signature seafood soup. I discovered that even when I requested to leave out the prawns in my $6 bowl, there was no compromise to the richness and flavour of it.
Aaron, the young boss behind this hawker stall, explained that his stock is made by boiling old hens and pork bones which imparts plenty of sweetness, depth and body.
After not having had the seafood soup here in a long time (due to snaking queues or them selling out for the day), I noticed two key improvements when I ordered it again today. Firstly, the fish now comes in bigger pieces, and they’re cooked perfectly so the texture is soft but not mushy. Secondly, there is more of that incredible soup in every serving now - hooray! I was also very pleased that the large, misshapen meatballs with mushroom that I loved, are as delicious as ever.
Making their meat cake from scratch, they have a good crunchy and bouncy texture. Soup was mind blowing, despite its milky brown color, broth was filled with a blend of umami and meaty flavor! It's that good and precious that the soup was never filled to the brim. Seafood was all fresh, big and juicy. Always wanting for more! Totally warm your stomach on a cold rainy day.
If only they gave moreeeeee soup. Seafood soup small ($6) with rice (50 cents). .
So I survived eating soupy, non fried and nkn spicy food for the whole week! (But I still cheated a bit by eating the chilli sauce which comes with the soup ://) may the acid reflux and sore throat be goneeee and never come back in year 2017.

If a higher quality fish is a must for you, the stall also does a version that replaces the insipid dory fish with the firmer-fleshed red snapper. It tasted good when we had this today. And that's not all that was in the bowl. Squeezed along with the fish in their signature umami broth were two big fresh prawns and a few large meat patties. I liked the latter a lot even though they're a bit salty. Dunking them in the orange vinegary chilli dip did help to balance out the taste though.
Raved about by @wongahyoke, I have been eager to get my hands on a bowl of Yan Ji Seafood Soup for the longest time. Well, my first taste of it at the Old Airport Road Hawker Centre stall did not let me down.
Because I was feeling greedy, I made a beeline for the $10 serving. It's the most expensive one and came with an abundance of ingredients including three very big prawns that were exceedingly fresh. The large strips of fish maw were excellent sponges - one bite and out gushed the superb broth. Also fighting for space in the bowl were a few gigantic pork patties. They weren't pretty but boy, were those misshapen lumps tasty from the bits of "ti poh" (fried sole fish) and black mushrooms dotting them. I did feel they could have dialed down the saltiness slightly by cutting back on the "ti po" though. Thrown in there were pieces of dory fish as well, but I didn't enjoy them much as they're overly soft and mushy.
Without a doubt, the soup was the highlight of this meal. I couldn't see past its surface from the saturated goodness. It would be great if the hawker made top-ups available. Honestly, I wouldn't mind paying for more of that ultra-rich broth.
