Tow Kwar Pop with Fresh Fruits

$3.00 Ā· 9 Reviews

This is a pretty popular stall in tiong Bahru market. It's our first time trying the dish and we found it a tad underwhelming despite the many good reviews. The taukwar was really crispy and had bean sprouts and cucumber sandwiched in between. There were also a few slices of apples and papaya that gave the dish a refreshing few bites in between. However we felt that we preferred traditional rojak as it has more flavour.

The stuffed tau pok was grilled until crispy over charcoal, giving it a aromatic smell and taste so good with the sauce and side ingredients including my favourite sliced papaya and red apple.

This Rojak has to be the epitome of all Rojak as it has these tow kwar (beancurd skin) stuffed with bean sprout and cucumber. Not just that, before being served together with fried fritters, they are grilled over a charcoal grill giving it a smoky char elevating the dish.

Finally gotten down to trying the popular tow kwar pop (aka the Singapore-style salad) for lunch. This was such a delight to eat with those crispy hand-grilled stuffed tau pok, crispy warm fish crackers and a mix of fresh fruits (apples, shredded papaya and thinly sliced turnip)! I will definitely be back for more.

The Tow Kwar Pop Rojak is a must order dish at Tiong Bahru Market.
The 2 āļøāļø ingredients of this dish, in my opinion is definitely the thin, crispy fish cracker as well as the intense flavour and addictive shrimp paste a.k.a. ā€˜Hei Gorā€™. ā¤ļø #burpple

"Meticulously grilled to crispy perfection and stuffed generously with crunchy bean sprouts and sliced cucumber, Tiong Bahru Marketā€™s Tow Kwar Pop makes for the perfect snack in between meals," says Tastemaker Vanessa Kou. And she's right. At this stall, the beancurd puff is painstakingly grilled over charcoal. Choose to get a few pieces of the tow kwar pop tossed with some fresh fruit for $3, or go for the full rojak set for $4 or $5. Tastemaker Jean Kao loves that they use sweeter red apples in the mix, compared to the tart green apples most rojak stalls prefer, along with thin and crispy crackers that add a lovely crunch. While Tastemaker Jean wishes the owner had been more generous with the prawn paste sauce, Tastemaker Vanessa appreciates that it doesn't overpower the dish, so you can taste how all the ingredients come together.

Meticulously grilled to crispy perfection and stuffed generously with crunchy bean sprouts and sliced cucumber, Tiong Bahru Marketā€™s Tow Kwar Pop makes for the perfect snack in between meals. As my first ever tau kwar pop (beancurd puff), I didnā€™t know what to expect but the balanced combination of sweetness, savouriness, nuttiness and tinge of tanginess really hit the spot. Lightly coated with prawn paste sauce and topped with a good handful of grounded peanuts, the condiments were thankfully not overpowering as you can still taste the other elements - the flavours coming together harmoniously and just complementing one another. And by serving the sauces separately, I was able to enjoy all the textures of the fruits, fried dough fritters and tofu puffs as they retained their crisp as well as crunch till the very last bite!

I found it fascinating that the tau pok gets grilled, whatā€™s more over charcoal to get the crisp and aromatic char. At this Tiong Bahru Market stall, you can either be healthy and get just a few pieces of the tow kwar pop with some fruits for $3, or indulge in a rojak set for $4 or $5 portions.

I like that the grilled tao pok is more pillowy than usual. The addition of fresh red apple was welcoming since most stalls use green apple for the tart flavour, but my tastebuds favour sweet.

Confession: I only want to eat the fried youtiao (dough fritters) inside a rojak. I mean yeah sure Iā€™ll take a few pieces of the turnip and nibble on the green mango or pineapple, but only to hide that Iā€™m sneaking all the youtiao into my mouth - also easier when everything is (should be) drenched in the dark prawn sauce so ingredients are indistinguishable. The best part about this plate for me was surprisingly not the youtiao, but the thin crispy crackers, something Iā€™ve never had in rojak before and itā€™s way better than fried youtiao which isnā€™t always sold crispy. Likely to be a healthier alternative too.
:
You may be slightly disappointed that this rojak doesnā€™t have that much prawn sauce drizzled on, even though they gave a bit extra on a separate saucer. Healthier choice label? šŸ˜ #Burpple

Just love the name. Anyway, this is an Asian fruit salad with fried dough fritters and fried beancurd. #food
