Steamboat restaurants are a dime a dozen in Singapore, with many offering the usual suspects of soup bases like chicken, mala, tomato and etc. However, local flavored soup bases for steamboat buffets are surprisingly scarce in Singapore, perhaps due to the intricacy and time-consuming process of the recipes. One steamboat restaurant though – King's Laksa Steamboat – has gone the extra mile in boiling up a delectable laksa soup base that hits all the right notes and takes painstaking hours of preparation while simultaneously keeping its buffet prices at an all-time low and stocking quality ingredients.

Head to this Serangoon establishment (a short stroll from NEX) for steamboat with a twist. By that, we mean the laksa broth, which is fragrant and full on flavour, yet light enough to slurp on right till the end. The Laksa Steamboat Buffet ($21.80 weekday lunch, $26.80 for weekend lunch and daily dinner) is great value, and the price includes two soup bases — the laksa is a no brainer; pick something mild like the chicken soup for your second to counter the richness. The standard selection of ingredients are decently fresh; keep an eye out for the super fresh prawns and fish slices. The buffet also includes cooked food, free flow drinks and ice cream — don't miss the tasty, fried-to-order chicken wings.

The cooked food portion served wonderfully crispy fried chicken wings, luncheon meat & mantou. Buffet spread offered the standard variety of meat, seafood, veg & mushroom. The place was rather tight and too narrow to move around. Especially the buffet & sauce area. Tables were closely placed & the bulky chairs were not helping. Overall not a pleasant dining environment. Most likely will not be a revisit place for me 😅

So near my house yet I've never been here - seriously #fail especially it's LAKSA (my favourite food) in Steamboat version!

The laksa Steamboat base is really good - homemade recipe that is thick and creamy! It's a pretty affordable buffet as well, think free flow laksa soup and your usual Steamboat ingredients like vegetables, radish, meatballs etc. Don't forget to order the fish slices, really fresh and flaky!

The taste of the Laksa soup truly reflects the amount of effort that has gone into concocting the soup. The Laksa soup is fragrant and has a rich coconut milk aftertaste.

Steamboat/Hotpot buffet. Service was excruciatingly slow, & the hot plate took so long to boil the soup. Perhaps it's their way of preventing any burnt pots (which, btw, if it happens, you're apparently charged $9). Once it got going, though, it was all good.

You can choose 2 flavours for your soup base, since the hotpot is split down the middle. Went with Laksa 叻沙 (their specialty) & Herbal 药材. Other choices: Chicken 鸡汤, Seafood 海鲜, Ma La 麻辣. The Laksa was quite special & the herbal taste in the Herbal soup is fairly strong. I liked both, although I felt very thirsty after my meal. 😁

You order meat, seafood & noodles from an order sheet, & help yourselves to the vegetables at the self-service buffet counter near the entrance. There is a cooked food section on the order sheet, but our orders came about 1 hour later (wat), which was hilarious. Cooked food = Golden Mantou, Chicken Nuggets, Fried Tofu, Chicken Wings, Spring Rolls, Fried Fish Balls, Potato Wedges, Luncheon Meat.

The downpour out there calls for a Laksa Steamboat. The Laksa soup base is quite rich and authentic in flavour, just nice for a hearty and satisfying steamboat experience. This ala carte buffet also has a decent range of menu, with some fried stuff to complement the soup-cooked items. Other popular soup bases such as spicy (麻辣) and herbal are also available.

Prices are revised at S$25.80 per adult whole day every day, excludes beverages.

A short walk from NEX in Serangoon, King's Laksa is a good option for a no-frills date night or a simple gathering with a group of friends. Of course, you must opt for the laksa soup base, and choose another from options like seafood or mala. The laksa broth is full of flavour yet light enough for you to sip on right to the very end. The Laksa Steamboat Buffet ($18.80 for weekday lunch, $23.80 for weekday dinner, weekend lunch and dinner) also includes cooked food and desserts aside from the standard meat, seafood and vegetable options — don't miss their chicken wings that are fried to order! While the sliced meats are your average fare, come for their super fresh prawns that they get from Jurong Fishery Port every other day. We also enjoyed the friendly and attentive service very much. Pro tip: Don't discard the prawn heads after eating the prawn — throw them back in the broth to sweeten it!

Laksa Steamboat Buffet ($23.80+)

This King's Laksa Steamboat has been around for years but they had a change in management just 2 months ago! Service now is great as the current owner had the entire service team rehired and trained after the previous less than desirable feedback.

We ordered the Laksa and Seafood soup bases. Overall, the Laksa soup base was rich and tasty and I really enjoyed that. I was slurping the laksa throughout the meal👍🏼! On the other hand, the seafood soup would have been more aptly named seaweed soup. It was only much tastier after we added more seafood to the soup.

Overall, food here was hit and miss. I would strongly recommend ordering multiples of their fresh prawns🙌🏼! The owner specially buys them live from Jurong Fishery Port every few days to ensure freshness! The fried chicken wings were also super yums! It is deep fried only upon ordering and definitely tasted like shrimp paste chicken to me!

They're also quite proud that their "appetizers" are fried to order. You can choose from items like chicken wings, luncheon meat, tofu, spring rolls and man tous. 🍖

The chicken wings were our favourite, crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside, it had the homemade feel that's hard to fault. It's not often you get freshly fried sides at a buffet like this but it's definitely one of their plus points! 👅💦

One of the items that King's Laksa's boss was telling us about was their prawns! 🍤 Apparently her partner gets up at 5am every two days to go down to Jurong Port Fishery to get fresh, live prawns!!!

Indeed, these were super fresh and easy to peel. Once again, I'll recommend that you don't waste the prawn heads and throw them back into the broth for an amazing tasting soup later on. You'll also want to add in their flower crabs that while a little bit powdery, was sweet and tasty! 🦀 It was really fun trying to create an epic soup from the ingredients 😋

ANYWAY, we had a pleasant experience at this little joint a short walk away from NEX. Previously under a different management (which had some pretty notorious service moments), the new owner said she booted out all the service staff and begun training a new batch afresh! 👏 The Chinese lady boss herself was very friendly and went around talking to all the tables which we really appreciated! 😊

We had the Laksa (of course) and seafood soup base. The Laksa was a favourite of my dining partner who kept slurping it up! Made more for drinking, it was lighter than your usual Katong Laksa gravy and great for cooking the meats and YTF in. 🍲 Speaking of the meats, they are what you'd expect from a buffet place like this but you shouldn't be filling yourself up on these. Instead just get loads of their prawns and crabs which I'll post about separately. 😛

Overall an enjoyable experience, the only thing I really wish they'd include is MUSIC! Did tell the lady boss about it and I hope she brings in a music system soon 🎶

It is only fried upon order, so you get it pipping hot everytime. The prawn paste marinate absorbs into the flesh, on top of the crispy skin. It is so good, we order this dish a couple of times.

If this dish is only a supporting act, you can look forward to uniquely delicious laksa base steamboat. Yum yum yum.
