Malaysia, Truly Asia (Kuala Lumpur)
If you are into moreish comforting flavours, banana leaf rice is right up your alley as you will be piled with mountains of rice, curry sauces and condiments to go alongside a plethora of dishes such as mutton rendang, ayam kicap manis, fried fish and squid. One surprising condiment is the crispy bitter gourd, a vegetable that I usually avoid due to the bitter taste but the ones here were fried to an absolute crisp with no bitterness. Prepare for the impending food coma after this meal.

The journey there was rather smooth as traffic wasn’t as highly congested on a Friday morning and we got a table almost immediately when we reached but the restaurant soon filled up very quickly thereafter. Went straight for the signature Village Park’s Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng (12 MYR) and if there is one single dish that solidifies your visit to Kuala Lumpur, it has to be a visit to Village Park for this plate of goodness.
The coconut rice was aromatic and fluffy and sambal was a good balance of sweet and spicy. The x-factor has got to be the berempah fried chicken which was well marinated, juicy and tender. Everything was right about this plate and it was a great breakfast to start the day.

What’s unique is that their chee cheong fun is drenched in a soya sauce mixture and sprinkled with dried shrimp while the other version is doused with a curry gravy. The yong tau foo are re-fried upon order and it does not taste stale or oily at all. In fact, you should also order a bowl of dumplings that’s cooked in a preserved vegetables broth.

It’s just too dark roasted and the milk used for the flat white doesn’t complement the coffee flavour notes. Had a go at their French Toast with Berry Compote and it comes with a scoop of mocha ice cream which makes the visit more worthwhile.

Once you stepped in, it transforms into a contemporary modern coffeeshop but still serving the traditional food. The eggs on toast with curry is amazing on its own but when paired with the dark roasted traditional kopi, it makes an impeccable partnership. However, the star of the show for me has got to be their signature curry chicken noodles, which I got the bee hoon option and it’s drenched in a thick and creamy curry that’s flavourful and wholesome. Another special mention is the nasi lemak which is served with a deep fried chicken leg that has been marinated with fermented beancurd, a less-than-common marination.

However, the vibe of this space is to communicate togetherness and united-ness. Their most popular dish is the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng (RM 13.90) which the standout is surely the fried chicken. My only gripe was that the sambal was a bit too watery, otherwise, everything on this plate was good.

However, there’s one that stands out among the crowd and it’s none other than Wong Ah Wah, which occupies several units due to its popularity. The most popular and must-order item is of course the grilled chicken wings. Grilled and smoked to perfection, the marination makes the meat so flavourful and addictive that you just cannot stop at one.

Between the both, I would prefer the Snowman with the salted caramel filling more than the Christmas Tree as the melon flavoured doughnut tasted too artificial. Do we have these in Singapore or it’s available only in Malaysia?

One of the trendiest drinks on Instagram has finally made its way to Asia, the Goth Latte. Beneath the dark world, this black latte actually contains activated charcoal that has proven health benefits as opposed to the whimsical colourings from those unicorn drinks.

This might invite some debate as to where serves the best nasi lemak, but being in a country whereby nasi lemak also happens to be the national dish, you must be serving some kickass nasi lemak to be promoted by the tourism board.

The signature Nasi Lemak (RM 24.90) might put off some for its hefty price tag for something that you can easily get by the roadside stall at a fraction of the price but after finishing this plate, I am sold by it. The dried shrimp floss, hard boiled egg and achar are just mere passengers but the true stars are the aromatic coconut infused rice, sambal ikan billis and lemak chicken curry. You’ve definitely got to try it to believe it.

Made it just in time after lunch before it’s all sold out and was rewarded with plates of meat! From roasted pork to char siew and especially the roasted chicken that was calling out to us from afar, everything was just super yummy that even though we just had noodles prior to this, we wiped out almost everything that we have ordered. Special mention goes out to the roasted chicken which was my personal favourite for its tenderness (even the breast meat was very juicy), flavour and crispy skin. Everything that you would have expected for roasted chicken can be found in this plate.
