Want soupy mala xiang guo? This is the place to go! If you’re a mala wimp like me, go for the xiao la level. So flavourful with just the right amount of heat. Ingredients were fresh and generous too!

We have a winner for ma la soup! From the Old Chengdu restaurant across the street, this offshoot in People’s Park Complex doles out delicious takeaway-only Ma La Tang at $12 for a portion hearty enough to feed a group of four. Go with the lowest ‘xiao la’ spice level to hit the sweet spot, which sports a hint of herbal fragrance without being too overpowering. Pro tip: Head next door to the hawker centre for seats.

For $12 bucks, this was so worth it! It was a generous helping and we finished every bit of it. The cons were that it is takeaway only! So we brought it over to the hawker centre to eat. But still, it was worth the hassle. The ingredients were fresh and the spice level for small heat was just right. They had a lot of options at the store as well. From meats to vegetables to mushrooms. We got it in small heat- It had a little kick but not enough to alter the taste. It felt a little herbal as well. Oh, the chicken slices were extra tasty or some reason with the soup.

Don’t let the queues at Ri Ri Hong Ma La Xiang Guo put you off satisfying your ma la cravings, not when our Tastemakers have discovered a worthy competitor sans crazy crowds. Located right in front of Ri Ri Hong’s second stall (facing Chinatown MRT exit C), this kiosk outside of People’s Park Complex offers similar prices ($1 for veggies, $2 for meat, $3 for seafood). Old Chengdu’s signature is their ma la soup, which packs a numbingly spicy punch thanks to the generous amount of fresh and dried chillies with a tinge of sourness. Their rendition may see a heavier hand on oil, but Burpple Tastemaker Wei Zhi Chiang was impressed by how well the ingredients soaked up all the flavours. Pairing their bowl with heaps of conjac, luncheon meat and oyster mushrooms, Burpple Tastemaker Irene Arieputri declared this one of the best ma la soups around!

Just next to People's Park Complex Food Centre, opposite Ri Ri Hong's second outlet facing the MRT station, Old Chengdu Sichuan Cuisine Restaurant is a food stall easy to miss among the many others, but really glad we came by after a friend's tip (thanks @herohow)! Prices are by portion and similar to the surrounding stalls - $1 for vegetables, $2 for meats and $3 for seafood. The soup tasted like a cross between Suan La Fen (酸辣粉) and MLXG. We went with the medium spice that came with a handful of fresh and dried chilies, and it was numbingly spicy with a good kick of sourness. Got to admit that it was really oily but also super addictive! It was especially shiok as the ingredients soaked up the soup really well (make sure to try the konjac slices). The default is the soupy version but you can request for a dry one too. Also, they only do takeaways, but most customers just bring it across to the food centre to eat.

Old Chengdu also has a restaurant a stone’s throw away at the other MRT exit and I’ll surely be heading there soon! #BurppleChinatown

The standard here is ma la soup, so if you want the dry version, please let them know when ordering! We were quite sad knowing that we got a bowl of ma la soup instead, but boy, this soup is super potent with generous amount of dried chilli and grinded chilli padi in the broth. The soup itself, though oily, had a tinge of sourness that kicked our tastebuds further. We paid $5 for this bowl full of ingredients — 4 slices of luncheon meat, loads of conjac, thick noodle and oyster mushroom. One of the best ma la soup around!
