Upper Cross Street has two soy sauce chicken shops not far from each other with homophonous names. I tried one years ago and never knew there's another until recently. I don't have their story so go elsewhere for that. I'll start off by saying Chiew Kee set a high benchmark. Chew Kee here was competent but wasn't without flaws. The chicken was the best thing, rightly so. Good soy sauce chicken you can't split the meat from the sauce, and here it's completely marinated. Unfortunately, the meat clearly wasn't cooked perfectly. Also, the soup's lightness can be polarising. Anyway, as I sat there, I was fascinated how eight pax ran the business. They weren't spread out and none was acting busy. When an order arrived, all eight switched on like clockwork, each with a distinct role, yet symphonic. Impressive.

$8.50 for one. Soya sauce chicken and Tau Kua are hits. Their fragrant rice probably had a really bad day. Should try the store a few units down, scores better overall.

From Chew Kee Eating House.
Tender slices of soya chicken & vegetables over Hor Fun $5+$1 for the braised egg.
Highly recommended!

Soya Sauce Chicken (Half chicken: $16):
Chicken is very tender and well braised. Personally, i think that it is rather well balanced. Goes fantastically with their chicken rice (and chilli sauce)!

Yummy but slightly pricier than the non original one. Anyway, was good at 7$

Not a fan of chicken rice, but very much a fan of whiskey. Stopped by the Auchentoshan pop-up at Chew Kee Soy Sauce Chicken & was pleasantly surprised to find it fairly empty! Long weekend, everyone's not in town?

Anyhoo, was a great night sipping on curated cocktails ($12 nett) with a local twist. Think pineapple tarts, coconut water, chrysanthemum tea... Not all at once, though. In separate cocktails 😂

I also really enjoyed listening to The Mad Trio playing (you guys are good), they are here every Friday & Saturday playing acoustic sets.

This pop-up will be here til end August, stop by if you have the chance. If you have a WeWork staff pass, you get 20% off! I don't, but drinks here are affordable enough that I am actually quite tempted to come here again within the month. Service was very warm & friendly too ☺ Cheers! 🥃
