Besides the iconic samsui ginger chicken, my other favourite from this set menu is the honey truffle pork chop with the stir-fried mushrooms at the bottom that gives a nice earthy aroma and flavour. The yam rice is unique on its own as it is steamed and then stir fried with dried shrimps, Chinese sausage and topped with pine nuts.

The set comes with a traditional boiled soup of the day, signature samsui ginger chicken, birthday braised noodles with chicken & mushrooms, garlic broccoli, two new dishes in Ah Ma’s Braised Baby Ribs and Hometown Tofu with Trio Eggs & Dried Scallop, Samsui Bao Bao that pays homage to the Samsui women heritage, double-boiled melon with honey dates and bottled chrysanthemum tea.
The Ah Ma’s Braised Baby Ribs is paired with steamed mantou and the ribs are braised for four hours and simmered over low heat for two additional hours to achieve a tender and juicy texture. The tofu in the Hometown Tofu dish also requires an amount of work as the tofu is made from scratch every day.

So if you're too chicken to solo a whole portion of their chicken with ginger samsui sauce (pun 100% intended), this is a brilliant alternative. The chicken is served differently (cubed & cooked along with the rice in the bowl) but there's still the famous sauce! The rice was cooked beautifully too with this claypot method, and even better drizzled with dark sauce.
Joe the friendly waiter told me that that it would take between 15-20 minutes to come, & I didn't think it took that long, but those who come starving please take heed!
When the plate of lettuce came, I thought 'What an interesting way to serve this dish!'. Kind of similar to how Peking Duck is eaten in some restaurants (except with a different vehicle).
Gently place a slice of that juicy chicken strip onto the lettuce and generously smother it with their famous Ginger sauce. I'm not huge on ginger which can be very overpowering sometimes, but this was subtle enough that I could appreciate it, along with the equally gentle, savoury sesame notes. A light & refreshing side.
P.s. Their canned chilli is super good too! Full of strong, haebi flavour which I loved.
I read a blogpost written by DanielFoodDiary about this dish and he said it was only 502 calories?! Being a calorie conscious person, I decided to try it out. The dish costs $11.90 even though it is very pricey(it's from a restaurant what can we expect) but it was a really big plate with a very generous serving and filled with lots of ingredients like chicken, prawns, bean sprouts and many other vegetables. I wasn't exactly extremely full as I was super hungry when I ate it but a normal person would most probably be unable to finish the plate by themselves. All in all, it tasted great I would most definitely go back and eat it again :)
Not sure about you but I'd always dunk my chicken chunks in the savoury, gingery, sesame oil, then wrap it within a slice of lettuce, forming a hamburger of sorts. Slurps!!!!
You can forcefully said that this is a kind of Chinese salad when you make a wrap - of cabbage, steamed white samsui chicken, cucumbers & a generous scoop of the signature ginger sauce. Yum yum!
