More Reviews of good food at Isetan Supermarket (Westgate)

Japanese fair at Isetan Supermarket. Taste not really to my liking though. Probably red melon is just not my cup of tea.

A few weeks ago, there were a few stalls inside iSetan supermarket selling mini fried prawns, squid, crabs and shishamo. After trying the tester, I couldnt help not to buy a mix of all of them as snacks 😊 It costs $16 for 200 or 300gr I couldnt remember exactly..

I 💖 MELON PAN!!

And as if right on cue, the Summer Hokkaido Fair currently happening at Westgate Basement 1 had me queuing for Himawariya’s Butter Cookie Melon Bread ($3). Having mine just fresh out the oven, the soft, warm, sweet, crunchy crusted melon-y bread has no equal!

Potong-shaped ice lolly in Salted Milk flavour($2). This flavour actually tastes like white rabbit milk candy~

Practically melt-in-your-mouth, Bashodo Co. Ltd’s assorted (they had a selection of sesame, matcha, kinako, and cocoa) handmade warabi mochi were literally the bomb, a subtle explosion. So soft, I just can't! Faintly sweet and chewy, each morsel was heaven. The flavours also harmonise perfectly together and the cocoa being my favourite with the added chocolatey rich fragrance.

📍 Isetan Westgate Japan Fair
💵 Damage [$17.20/2 flavours]

I was both slightly appalled and intrigued by this so I had to get myself a box. Strangely, I fell in love with its smooth, bouncy texture which was an in between of Korean rice cakes and jelly. It wasn't sticky, with a slight bouncy texture. Loved this!!! Wish I could get ten more boxes! The warabi was coated in soybean powder (injeolmi) green tea and black sesame!

Saw so many people queuing up for this, and I got tempted by the words 'red bean' and 'sticky'. Sadly this wasn't even half as sticky as anything like glutinous rice. Wish it was more flavour some too. :(

Custardy goodness (but I couldn't really taste the honey?) that is demolished in a mouthful. Is part of the Japanese food fair currently outside Isetan B1!

So easily pop-able into one's mouth and gone just like that! I like how they are so generous with the fillings - but then again it is so tiny! Isetan is currently having a Japanese Food Fair so do check it out!

My friend got these Hokkaido cheesecakes from Tampines Isetan where they are currently having a food fair! I don't know whether I'm having a cheese-related obsession as of lately (I'm not a cheesecake person, BUT I HAVE EATEN at least 5-6 cheesecakes this month??) but these were really good nonetheless and we creamy, without being overly rich on the palate and a perfect balance of dense and fluffy.

Japan fair at @isetansg Westgate ends 17 March.

From Kumamoto! I love steamed sweet potatoes as they're moist, soft. The Kumamoto sweet potatoes are sweet and fluffy and not floury, dry, stringy or fibrous. Sweet potatoes are Paleo, nutrients dense and not toxic like usual potatoes, but it's not low carb, it's a great after a high intensity workout to replenish your glycogen or for a cheat day or a carb refeed.

The term warabimochi was derived from a haiku: "hohoemimo Bimitazuzaete kitarikeri"

which means: "have a happy smile with nice sweets". warabimochi is made from water, sugar and powdered Bracken, a rhizome starch. The Japanese call it warabi, It's very expensive and difficult to harvest which is why mochi nowadays are made with other flours made from glutinous rice or sweet potato or tapioca.

I bought this warabi from the Japan fair @ Isetan. All the way Japan, the warabimochi from Bashoudo co ltd is handmade the traditional way It's so much lighter and softer compared to modern mochi, and not too sweet, the kinako powder and mochi melts in the mouth. So divine, it's the first time I'm eating warabimochi and I fell in love with it. There's also other flavours like black sesame and matcha. Matcha is my favourite too. $12 a pack if I recall correctly.

Rich, smooth and chocolatey; Ishiya Shiroi Koibito 白い恋人 Chocolate Drink, I think, is best enjoyed chilled and poured into a glass of ice but for the sweet-tooth have it straight from the can.

I love love Japanese food and Bentos have to be at the top of my list!! I ❤ takeaways so I can pig out in the comfort of my own home and packed meals are such colourful (most importantly convenient) affair~

Mostly I go to Isetan Westgate (basement) since it is near my place and I will be spoilt for choice but I always get my bento from the stall closest to the cashier (as theirs looks the best)!

Ordered a Long Black from the friendly auntie in charge of the UCC coffee bar. Auntie said she normally uses Sumiyaki special blend imported from Japan and might change blend from time to time. Nice place to people watch haha

We initially thought that the fair was within Isetan, but it was actually at the atrium at the basement. This double scoop of melon and haskap (a type of berries found in Hokkaido) costs $6.50. •

I found that the melon flavour here couldn't be compared to the soft serve at Liang Court. The berry side of the scoop is sweet and I heard that it has many remarkable health properties.
