Soi 19 has opened a branch in serangoon! The deceptively pale noodles were actually really tasty and well-seasoned by the sauce (there is a dark sauce option if you prefer that). The wantons were really good as well - similar, if not better, than the ones served at pon tian. Personally, I really loved the generous helping of fried lard that made everything more indulgent and gave the noodles a nice crunchy texture. Would recommend the large as they give more ingredients and gives you a bang for your buck. Serving time could be a bit slow, so come earlier to avoid the lunch or dinner crowd.

Poached French white asparagus, Iberico ham, sautéed mushrooms and chicken jus makes for a excellent combination of flavours and textures. The asparagus was tender and really juicy, and the whole dish was elevated by the nice smokiness and savouriness of the Iberico ham. Really gets your appetite going for the main course.

Although waffles and ice cream is a simple and widely-available dessert today, Holy Cow Creamery does it pretty damn good. The waffle was light and fluffy, and actually tasty and fragrant on its own. I found the earl grey lavender a bit too strong for my liking, but really liked how the banana and rum came together. Really affordable, with a good variety of flavours. Worth checking out if you’re in the area!

The moonlight horfun from KEK Seafood really lives up to its name! Usually not a fan of moonlight horfun cause the thought of eating raw egg is quite a turn off, and sometimes it can be quite dry; but this was pretty excellent. The egg after mixed it made the noodles have the perfect consistency and texture. Super flavourful, with a good wok hei, and generous amounts of lard for added crunch and indulgence. They were also quite generous with their other ingredients like squid, lup cheong and prawns, making each bite very satisfying.

The fried chicken sandwich from Park Bench Deli was so good! The sous vide chicken was super tender, but very crisp and crunchy on the outside as well. The chilli mayo was quite creamy, and provided a good level of spice. Simple, delicious, and a sizeable portion as well. Will definitely be back to try their other offerings!

The creamy mushrooms on sourdough is one of the must-try dishes from Atlas Coffeehouse. The sauce is creamy, but has a slight tang which helps cut through the richness. For something more substantial, add on scrambled eggs and Italian sausage. The eggs were silky smooth, although the sausage didn’t really add much. The add-ons bump up the price quite a bit but it still makes for an excellent brunch

The katsudon from Katsudon Hanakatsu is well worth it’s price; if not for its quality then at least for its quantity. For $13.50, you get a generous serving of fried pork and chicken cutlets. The chicken was definitely more tender and palatable than the pork which was tougher and harder to down towards the end of the meal. The large portions, while satisfying, made the entire meal pretty monotonous after a while especially since there’s only fried chicken and pork accompanying the rice. The spicy version gave it a nice kick, and was more enjoyable than the plain version. All in all, I would say it’s pretty value for money, although you might want to share it with a friend and have something else since finishing one is a bit much.

I liked the flavour of the cake - the matcha wasn’t too bitter and the sauce was nice and creamy. The texture was a little too soft/mushy for my liking. The Thai tea ice cream paired very well with the matcha flavours, and wasn’t cloyingly sweet. Pretty good and affordable spot for dessert if you’re in the area.

The salted egg sotong from KEK Seafood at Alexandra is definitely one of the best! It is a little pricey, but the portions are substantial - the small portion would be enough for 4 or even 5 people. Batter was crispy while the salted egg was not too overwhelming. It also was not overly salty, and had the right balance of flavours. One of the must orders here!

Decided to replace the pigeon with the beef from their set menu, and lowkey regretted it because the pigeon was excellent while the beef was just okay. It was a tad tough, and the parsley purée was a bit overpowering. The potatoes and lardons were a nice touch though.
