Located somewhere along the crowded stretch of Joo Chiat shophouses, I discovered Lau Hock Guan Kee sometime during my early university years, and since then, continued to patronize them regularly, especially during weekday supper hours. The auntie that served tables often commented on my (ahem) 'good' looks and never fail to tease me whenever the frequency of my visits start to dwindle ever so slightly. (A-boy ah, why so long never come and see auntie, or equivalent chatter). But what brought me back time and again ultimately was the fish head curry. The stand out item in the dish was the assortment of vegetables (brinjal, okra, onions (?!) etc), soaking up the generous serving of curry and leaving a trail of gentle sweetness and slightly tangy spicy sensation on the tongue. Prepare to sweat, especially on a humid weeknight with nary a breeze. But also, prepare to enjoy. #hawkerpedia
Whenever I hear of Seng Kee, my immediate reaction would be either the bak chor mee at Serangoon Gardens or the herbal soup at Changi Road. Little did I know that there's actually a Seng Lee Black Chicken Herbal Soup near my place.
Fortunately for fellow foodie-in-crime, @rainraineeataway who brought me here, I wouldn't have known of its existence (shame on me). For just $4, you get a choice of either kidney/mixed organs/lean meat cooked in a flavour-packed bowl of hot black chicken soup with mee sua that's sure to satisfy your late night hunger pangs. The stall opens from 11am in the morning till 12am at night.

Man, these Burpple Tastemakers... I LOVE THEM π
This beautiful mess right after a tasting. Doesn't get any better than this.
Rice, assorted fried bits and whatnots and soft boiled cabbage all slathered in that signature combination of curry, liu zhi and chili sauce. And best of all, the great company!
Good suppers are made of these. Just sayin'
A very addictive taste of gravy and chili, crunchy chicken chop pieces (wish it could be more tender though). Always wanted to try something else there, but end up ordering this nevertheless πΉ
After hours of playing basketball, my classmates and I would go to Toa Payoh Lorong 5 hawker centre to satisfy our meaty cravings. We'd order some juicy wings and savory satay, then wash them down with ice cold cups of sugar cane. Nowadays, we don't play basketball anymore, but we simply go there for the late night supper. The sugar cane has been replaced with beer, and we spend our time chit-chatting about our school days. #Hawkerpedia
Compliments to chef on this remarkable slab of pork in all its golden-skinned glory. Every bite β an incredible composition of crispy crackling, melty fat and juicy flesh β was just pure bliss, I tell you. Pair with those caramelised pineapple chunks and... MIND. BLOWN.
One of the more interesting fusion pastas I have had in recent memory, featuring large chargrilled prawns laid over broad ribbons of handcut pasta that's been tossed in an umami ebiko cream sauce and covered in yet more ebiko.
Along the bustling streets of Club Street is a hidden gem in the form of Italian restaurant Cugini. Believing in good homemade food, this five-year-old trattoria takes pride in using quality ingredients imported from all over the world. For the best squid ink pasta in town, look no further. Expect a burst of flavors in your mouth with the squid ink fettuccine ($27.90) with seafood, green pea puree and mullet roe. Made with extra yolk, the fettuccine pasta is richer, with a touch of homemade bottarga sauce (a Mediterranean delicacy made of mullet roe) that gels everything together.

Spicy Beef Stew Noodles Soup $7,
Beef & Pork Leg Rice Noodles Soup (Bun Ho Hue) $7.50,
Fried Vietnamese Spring Rolls $7,
Iced Tea $1 x 2
WAITING TIME: 8 min on a Thursday night
We never knew how authentic Long Phung dishes are until we tried real Vietnamese food in HCMC last November. It's the same special iced tea that we had in HCMC, and the Bun Bo Hue tastes like what we had there too.
Thought it was weird for this to show up only after we had our mains and dessert but guessed that the kitchen got stacked up with too much orders today. These were great and sides to compliment with alcohol; the crunchiness of the soft bones went well with the crisp Tempura batter and was fried to golden-brown perfection, flavoured with garlic salt and a little spiciness from paprika. Totally addictive when you dip it into the Kewpie-esque mayo on the side.
Though the Squid Ink Fettuccine is really the best in Kilo, we would like to introduce this Soft Shell Crab, which gravy and watermelon really came about as perfect Yin and Yang. Try this if you do not favour the baby eggplants!
