The orh nee paste is extremely thick and not too sweet, though you can tell that they were quite heavy-handed with the shallot oil. I felt it was a bit of an odd contrast against the soft sponge cake but I don’t really have a benchmark to set expectations for orh nee cake against so it’s all right I suppose!
I chose the pork katsu + chicken katsu, and pork katsu + breaded shrimp for my two sets. The pork katsu and breaded shrimp were the best and I would definitely return for these. The owner was really nice as well and shared with me how business has been slow these days due to low foot traffic in the mall. His food is really delicious and very worth the money with the Burpple 1-for-1, so pls support if you’re able to!
The best thosai ever!! It’s crispy and the masala potatoes are so fluffy and delicious. The dips at the side are also really tasty and I mopped up every bit of it before I could even realise what was happening!
This is twice the cost of a Ya Kun Set A (and without coffee!) but the kaya jam is really something unique that is worth trying at least once. It’s very coconutty and you can taste the lumps of kaya curd which is great fun for me. The Hokkaido bread was all right and soft-boiled eggs were nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. The kaya is really the star of the show here. Too bad they don’t sell the kaya as a standalone item!
This platter was very hearty and certainly filling, though no standouts for me save for the creamy scrambled eggs and vine tomatoes!
Service was excellent, though. I appreciated that the waitress made casual small talk with us when checking into SafeEntry etc. – these light touches go a long way!
I enjoyed the donburi bowl but would not have minded skipping over the yakitori skewers (my friend commented it was similar to the frozen ones she gets from the supermarket).
Miso soup, salad and tea were nice but really not anything out of the ordinary. You can get better donburis elsewhere for an equivalent price but without the ancillary sides and some may prefer that.
This is a weekend special and I finally woke up just in time to buy the last loaf on the shelf!
The good: lots! of figs embedded in the loaf and every slice was really full of figgy goodness. The not-so-good: texture of the bread was incredibly dense and lacked the fluffy crumb and chewy crust that is distinct of sourdough loaves.
Not sure if I’d get this again, though I really must say it’s great value for the figs!
This was amazing! Soft and fluffy pita served warm, and the hummus was chunky and flavourful (though a tad bit too salty). Would try their mezze platter next time!
This was so delicious! I loved the mix of lentils and the thick layer of cheese covering the strips of baked eggplant. I didn’t miss meat one bit.
Service was excellent as well, with an attentive waiter who was proactive in refilling our water etc.
From Chun Kee Fruit Juice. The zingy sourness was absolutely refreshing after a hot morning jog/cycle! The ice wasn’t completely crushed though, so there are some chunks of ice left in the end.
Loved the omelette roll, but that’s the only non-replenishable item. The kelp salad and kimchi were great appetisers too, but I felt the anchovies were a bit overly candied.
Soooo wobbly yet firm, I don’t know how this textural contrast exists. The owner is very friendly (and very good at upselling lol) but he was also very considerate to pack the coconut flakes for us separately so we could keep this to eat over the next three days.
