Honolulu Pineapple Bun

I really like Honolulu Cafe's polo buns, given how the cookie crusts are crunchy and sweet with an adequate fragrance to them. However, my gripe with them would be the dryness of the interior of the bread, and Honolulu Cafe has successfully found a delicious way to override the dryness: by adding everyone's favourite icy treat, ice cream!

The polo bun comes with 3 scoops of taro ice cream and 2 pocky sticks. Although the ingredients are simple, they're constructed in a way that makes this polo bun look certifiably atas. With the addition of the ice cream, the bread did not taste dry at all. The polo top was crispy and sweet, though the sweetness of the ice cream did drown out a bit of the cookie fragrance, so I'd prefer to eat them separate.

The ice cream has a pretty evident taro taste, though a gripe I have with it would be the overly icy texture, which was a bit of a mix between ice kacang and actual ice cream. Generally that did not diminish the taro flavour but I'm personally a fan of creamier ice creams.

So earlier I tried the plain crispy polo bun from Honolulu Café and wasn't impressed. However, I can safely say that this polo char siew bun is BOMB and OMG SO MUCH BETTER. It's like going on a date with a pair of twins, both are hot af on the outside, but one of them CLEARLY has more substance on the inside.

Where to start? This bun is generously stuffed with sweet char siew. The char siew doesn't have that cheap neighbourhood bakery char siew taste and it's nicely coated in sauce. Quite a bit of fat but also good amount of meat. The polo cookie on top was just GLORIOUS WOW. Sweet and buttery and super crumbly! The polo on its own was so good but together with the char siew? OMG MARRY ME ALREADY. And ofc extra bonus being that this polo isn't dry like the plain one.

This is one of those buns where I know that I just HAVE to get again.

💍 would I marry: YES WE ARE ON OUR HONEYMOON SHUSH

Was kinda hesitant on trying this because why get a regular char siew bun when Honolulu also sells char siew polos?

Pretty glad I tried this cuz it's so good! The bun is well filled with sweet char siew filling and the bread is really soft and slightly chewy. Definitely tastes high quality and one of the best char siew breads Ive had!

I'd still get the char siew polo over this, of course, but this bun is still amazing and I'd highly recommend!

⭐ Rating: 8.6/10 naked polo buns
🤑 worth the price: a bit pricey imo
🦖 would I buy again: for the shopee price, YES

I've tried quite a number of polo buns from different bakeries and this polo bun is pretty average tbh. The polo cookie is crisp and a little thin. It's nicely sweet but nothing all that wow. The rest of the bun is just plain, slightly dry bread. No buttery centre, just bread. Nothing interesting about it at all.

Super average polo bun, its basically just plain bread with a cookie crust. Save the money and just get a filled bun :/

This was the Polo Bun! Buttery and satisfying.

They got the crust right - crispy and slightly sweet. Still can’t get over the butter I had in HK at Kam Wah so this butter was just normal in my heart haha. I think the milk tea can be given a miss esp at the steep price of $3+ (can’t remember). I didn’t like the astringency and there wasn’t the creaminess/milkiness I look out for in milk teas

Which is the bigger bun? That’s THE awkward question to ask when you’re sharing with someone else. The funny thing is, @lipperrrs and I both thought the other piece was bigger. So it worked out for us! Which one did I get? Of course the one with the giant slab of butter!!

As a true born HK gal, I give Honolulu a thumbs up for the polo butter bun! Hidden on 1st floor. Definitely a good place to get authentic polo buns. The sugar crust is yayyyyyy. Chewy and didn’t just disintegrate into nothing. The bun itself... a bit too sticky for my teeth. But I still give 4.5⭐️ will come back again!

Special Pineapple Bun with HK milk tea.
.
Not everyday I will be in Orchard area, decided to have this snack for afternoon tea break.
.
Pineapple bun with butter, fried egg and sliced tomato. The bun is fragrant, crisp yet fluffy filled with yummy fried egg plus butter.
.
The HK milk tea is smooth and silky, making me missing the cafe in HK. Definitely traditional HK tea time snack.
