Wok-Fried Big Prawn White Bee Hoon

$16.80 · 21 Reviews

Pains me to say, but their signature dish seems to have lost its luster. The bee hoon felt a little limp, pork slices were tough and and prawns overcooked. Wok hei was still there but not as much oomph as before. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still tasty, but at its current price tag, a little hard to justify.

$16.80 for the small one and $19.80 for the big one.
This was sooo flavourful. A hidden jem! Get the big one and share! There's free flow of soup so don't be shy and get more if you want to. The chilli was da bomb! Spicy af and goes so well with the flavourful bee hoon.

If it’s named as Seafood White Bee Hoon, then it’d certainly be a YES from me without a doubt 🙊 But again, to each his own, #nohate 🌈⚡️

Loved this flavourbomb dish with white bee hoon soaking up the robust stock topped with massive fresh prawns that were perfectly cooked. The signature soup version is a flavourful alternative if you’re in the mood for something with broth. And yes, it’s customisable (noodle type, size of prawns, toppings, etc). Bonus points for the friendly service!

For conversations over local eats without the hustle and bustle of a hawker centre, this comfortable prawn noodles shop is your answer! Come for the Wok-Fried Big Prawn White Bee Hoon ($16.80), a solid dish of beehoon bathed in dense prawn stock and redolent of smoky wok hei. Have this with the homemade chilli sauce, which takes flavours to the next level with its tangy spiciness. On sides, we like the Shrimp Prawn Roll ($5.80) that showcases juicy yet crunchy minced meat and water chestnut filling beneath golden deep-fried pastry.

The white bee hoon was soaked in an umami laden prawn stock, with the wok hei taste significantly evident. The prawns were delightful as well, with four halves of a giant prawn making this dish a good eat. The only downside for me was the price; which i think is relatively expensive for a glorified tze char dish.

Finally made a trip down to Da Shi Jia. Parking tends to be a problem along Killiney road but we managed to park at Singtel Comcen (mandatory security car boot check required) and walked across the road.

Ordered the white Bee Hoon instead of their signature prawn noodle soup as I’m usually more into dry noodles. The default white Bee Hoon comes with the “big big” prawn, which is the second largest option ($16.90), but you can top up to the 大大大 option with an additional $3 (pictured, 2 prawns cut into halves per bowl).

We were all amazed by the size of the prawns, and even better that both my prawns came with roe! While I enjoyed the prawns in my bowl, my dad said the prawns were not very fresh (wasn’t a problem for me though). The white Bee Hoon absorbed the fragrant flavours of the prawn gravy and the noodles were cooked just right, not too soggy nor too undercooked. A good amount of white pepper topped the dish, and the Bee Hoon came with a bowl of prawn soup and chilli. I really enjoyed the green chilli provided, as well as the sambal chilli paste at each table. Each bite was chock full of umami goodness, and made even more shiok with addition of chilli! The prawn soup is really thick and yummy! The best part is that you can ask for more soup refills. Yay! However, I was quite disappointed that I couldn’t really detect the ‘wok-hei’ that other reviewers mentioned. It was still a nice dish overall, but could’ve been better with some smoky ‘wok hei’ to elevate the taste profile of the dish.

You have to try this, which is now in my list of prawn noodles that I'll return regularly for. They have the standard soup or dry prawn mee, but this plate pictured here is different - it's wok-fried beehoon.
🔸
This white beehoon was soaked in a reduced prawn stock, and you can imagine how umami this was with prawn stock reduced into this concentrated form. Yet it wasn't too salty, but was instead full of crustacean flavour. A friend told me that her plate came with lots of wok hei, but mine wasn't that evident. Despite that, my plate came with the aroma of garlic and lard that it was fried in.
🔸
The friendly boss, Yvonne, also gave us prawn soup to go along with this. And it was refillable.

Probably the best dry prawn noodles I’ve had in a while from @dashijiabigprawnmee . The prawns here are not just huge but comes with lots of roe which lends a strong umami to the bee hoon. Bee hoon was not overly moust but with just enough gravy to slurp up with some red chilli. I would have loved this with some sambal though. Each plate is served with complimentary soup that you can request more of. The soup was also so full of prawn sweetness.
