More Reviews of good food at Gin Khao (One Raffles Place)

Slightly taken aback at how long food takes to get served, don't expect too much service and while it serves a mean Thai dish, it's not too practical to dine here on a work day. Tomyum spice was nice, comes with prawns but not squid. ($20+)

Auspicious Lucky Red Set - the 4 Pax Set includes Stewed Soup with Three Treasures, Hot Tofu with Basil, Sweet Garlic Tom Yum Chicken, Red Ruby with Coconut Cream for dessert and of course, their iconic Watermelon Fried Rice that comes laden with all sorts of seafood.

I wasn't expecting cauliflower to be encased in the batter as I pop one into my mouth. It was soft, not soggy and would definitely go well with rice. It could be a way to fool a kid into eating their vegetables.

There was nothing really bad about this dish, but concomitantly, nothing really stood out. There was a nice char on the fish, but it was slightly tough. Also, there were tons of pin bones, which made it really hard to eat. We’re not sure if they should have been taken out? Nonetheless, nothing really special about this dish besides the lime sauce perhaps, which tastes very much like those you find in Thailand.

This dish was really a horror. We’re not sure whether this is what “authentic” basil pork tastes like, but we’ve had this dish multiple times, both locally and in Thailand and we’ve never had it taste like this. The pork was way too spicy, such that we could hardly taste anything else. Despite the chunks of basil that were tossed into the dish, they weren’t fragrant at all. There was also no distinctive taste of fish sauce, that is so typical of Thai cooking.

These chicken chunks were a great starter to our meal. They were really flavourful, and the fish sauce in the marinade really shone. They seem to have been marinated for a significant amount of time as the marinade could be tasted all the way through. We were afraid that there would be too much batter as that seemed to be the case, but these morsels were mainly meat, so that was great. The portion is pretty good for this price too.

MUST ORDER💯

There was only 1 desert available according the the server. Mango black sticky rice ($8.80) was served warm! Generous rich coconut milk drizzled over the black sticky rice. Very satisfying dessert!

Order the crayfish glass noodle (407 Kang Ob Woon Sen $20.20). It was served in a old school claypot. I had super high expectation for this dish and was disappointed. Taste wise it was a little too salty and did not have the “high heat” taste. The crayfish was ok but not fantastic. Not worth it.

Ordered their signature watermelon fried rice (511 Khao Phat Dtaeng Moe $14.80). This is the first time that I have watermelon fried. I anticipated a refreshing taste from the watermelon but the watermelon was more “extra”. In the sense that the fried rice was nice by itself. Don’t think I would order this again.

Order the signature Tom yum marinated wings (101 Gai Tod Tom Yum $10.80). Fried to golden brown perfection, it’s moist and juicy on the inside. The special green sauce is wickedly good. Not sure what’s in it but the spices are fragrant. The mild spiciness kicks in 5 seconds later and you can almost feel like you are breathing a fire at your throat! Highly recommended!

Ordered the jade green curry broth (211 Kaeng Khiew Wan talay $13.80). Broth is rich and good! Ordered the chicken version. Comes with generous amounts of chicken, eggplants, carrots, and long beans. We finished every drop of it! Super yummy! Will be back again for this!
Note: they close at 8:30pm

Gin Khao's Khao Phat Supparod Talay (Pineapple fried rice🍍) is one of my favorite thai dishes that I ❤. Packed full with ingredients, from mussels to prawns, sotongs, bits of eggs, cashew nuts and pork floss! I like that the fried rice taste slightly sweet too!

Gin Khao One Raffles Place is on eatigo and after 6pm, its 50% discount. The portion is big, food is good, price is affordable ($8.10 nett after discount), what's not to love?

Watermelon Fried Rice is not a particularly common Thai dish. But it's apparently a signature dish of Gin Khao. I was a bit disappointed the fried rice wasn't served in a watermelon bowl like all the pictures I've seen but nevermind, we'll move on. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This tastes reminiscent of Chinese fried rice with the slight but not prominent wok hei taste. The fried rice is fried with two shrimps, carrots, cabbage, and egg. Three tiny watermelon balls are then buried in it. And then it's garnished with some cashew nuts and chicken floss. The watermelon is a refreshing touch to fried rice that can tend to be a bit oily. But honestly I'm not impressed. This is basically Yangzhou fried rice with a 0% effort upgrade by tossing in watermelons and garnishing it with some cashews and chicken floss. And there's only three measly balls of watermelon that really isn't enough for this whole plate of fried rice. This was pretty disappointing as it seems that other previous iterations of this dish at other outlets came with more ingredients like squid, fried bean curd skin, and also much more watermelon. The 50% Eatigo discount is a good deal but I would probably go for other dishes that are better value.

Ordered this Tom Kha Gai since I've never tried it before and wow. The soup is made up of a rich milky base from the coconut milk, but the sourness typical of Thai cuisine quickly cuts through it and makes it so addictive. I was a bit hesitant on the first mouth, but the taste quickly grew on me. It also has a lot of ingredients in it like chicken (tasted like pork though), oyster mushrooms and tomatoes. Really worth it with 50% off on eatigo.

But I fell for this green chilli sauce. What sorcery is this! what is it made of?! The chill was sour and spicy at the same time and went so so so well w the chicken wings (although we don't get the chicken wings. It was supposed to be coated with tom yum sauce. but nope, it wasnt).
.

The black pepper tanghoon came with 5 prawns. I always don't unds what makes this dish so expensive ($18.80++). The prawns? Or the long broth cooking of the dish? Can't be the glassnoodle right.
.
On the other hand, the green curry fried rice is the wetter kind and not the dry tom yum fried rice we were used to eating.

We ordered tom yum chicken soup with rice (S$ 13.80) and green curry fried rice (S$14.80). It is located conveniently near both our offices at Raffles Place, believe that we will return to the restaurant. The tom yum chicken soup was okay but I am giving the green curry fried rice a thumbs up. It was delightful. #burpple #burpplesg

Ordered in on a lazy Sunday afternoon thanks to Deliveroo! Haven't had the Watermelon Fried Rice ($15.84) in awhile and it was definitely a good idea! Chunks of juicy watermelon for refreshing sweetness, served with beancurd skin and seafood, topped with pork floss. Tasted as comforting as what I remembered, only without the watermelon bowl. Also got the Phat Woon Sen Talay (seriously appe-Thai-zing wok-fried glass noodles with seafood, $15.84), Pla Muek Tod (Beer-battered squid, $11.56) & Gai Tod Tom Yum ($11.56). Thoroughly enjoyed the latter, which was tangy, well-marinated without being spicy with subtle tomyum fragrance, deep fried to golden perfection.

Because You Deserve The Best, Deliveroo is having a Thai Week promotion from 18th - 24th July with sets for 2 pax for $25/ 4 pax for $45 from participating merchants! THAIme to grab your friends/ family for a good meal in the comforts of your home!! #bydtb

This plate of basil pork doesn't come cheap, but it's super saucy, fragrant with lots of Thai basil, and packs a hefty spicy punch – exactly how I like it.
