More Reviews of good food at Straits Cafe (Rendezvous Hotel)

The cheese was good enough to lift the basic fried rice, but I must say this was an uncommon method of preparing Brussels sprouts.

La la beehoon, Thai curry chicken, fish, beef. Okay: chicken and beef. Bad: the beehoon was messed up for something so basic, while the fish promised wedding-style steamed fish yet was so tough.

Turkey, har gow, teriyaki chicken salad, keropok. Everything was decent, although honestly the bar was low. The turkey was like chicken, which I guess was a good thing.

Select your ingredients and they'd grill them for you. The lamb, though tender and flavourful, was poorly grilled. The carrot and asparagus were carrot and asparagus.

Always exciting to see this at buffets. Too expensive to buy ala carte outside. They give relatively big prawns too.

No treatment. Just lobsters cut open for you on the spot. Shiok. All got roe too. Overall Straits Cafe's buffet sucked, but this was a treat.

Huge variety (check the menu before going). We had oysters and durian cake amongst many other dishes as well for a Saturday Lunch buffet!

The Rendezvous hotel may be 1.5 stars below the Grand Hyatt, but the Straits Café is 2 or 3 levels below the Straits Kitchen restaurant. The buffet has both western and Asian dishes, although variety is quite limited. Ingredient quality is poor, and the food taste and flavour can be diplomatically described as mediocre, or realistically as off-putting. The service staff are friendly; problem is there aren’t enough of them - the stations (noodle soups, carvery) are often without help.

Go!

If you’re a fan of oysters, crabs, and durians and don’t mind local fare being the main highlights of the buffet, this place is great for you.

Other new dishes at the buffet spread include Wok-fried Mee Rebus, Black Pepper Fried Carrot Cake and Nonya Laksa with Pig Skin!😋😋 Remember to save some stomach space for the dessert spread too, especially durian lovers! You're in for a treat!🤤 .
The buffet is going at $42++(lunch) and $58++(dinner). 👌🏻👌🏻

This Kerabu Yusheng has thicker strands of veg and it drizzled with a refreshing spicy pineapple and ginger lily dressing. Love the fried yam strips but not the hard youtiao 'croutons'. This 4 person portion feeds 7 easily and is only $28 if you dine in. 8 pax portion ($38) is available for takeaway.

A surprise from the boy today to celebrate a mini milestone. Call me cheapo, but I skipped the lines for sashimi and oysters to whack the poh piah/ kueh pai tee selection at the buffet. I loved the crunchiness of the turnips and the blend of flavours (think sweet sauce + peanuts + egg + cucumbers) that came in these mini cups of delight. I think I almost went overboard with these KPT that the boy had to stop me from having more, lest I fill my tummy with all these cheapo-nana food from the buffet. That said, even after all the salmon and cray fish and Alaskan crabs, I'm still thinking of these KPT...............

So onto the selection of more expensive items at the buffet. This plate features one of my favourite items there (aside from the kueh pai tee)- the black pepper stir fried mussels. I wasn't expecting much, given that most of the time, the black pepper sauce tends to overshadow the freshness of the seafood. But the one here perfectly brought out the flavour of the mussel. Tasty and balanced. Much love!

Braised Baby Abalone with Bai Ling Mushroom and Seasonal Vegetables 蚝皇鲍鱼仔扒白灵菇时蔬
Part of the 8 course wedding lunch which I had yesterday. Quite juicy especially the mushroom which was too slippery to handle with chopsticks.
