The Lokal

In 2014, Aussie Chef Darren Farr started The Lokal, a Modern Australian Restaurant-Bar, providing all our customers with homemade comfort food — including butter, sauces, pickles and meats all made on site. Our name is German for local, an influence that be explained by its proximity to Goethe-Institut Singapore and is also reflective of our diverse and worldly approach towards food that can be enjoyed by the people in Singapore.  In the day, he serves up healthy and hearty brunches like Smashed Avocado with Ricotta, Roasted Pumpkin Salad, and Steak & Eggs, but slowly transits into a cozy and versatile space for intimate dinners & casual cocktails sessions with comfort food by German Head Chef Max Strauch such as Tasmanian Grass Fed Steak Frites, Catch of the Day and Grilled Pork Chops. Aside from the normal menus, both Chef Darren & Max also prepare Daily Specials with fresh seasonal produces for Brunch & Dinner, like Victorian Truffles & White Asparagus.

Pimp your breakfast because you can! Love it when I get to pick everything I like on my plate. Started out a lot greedier but had some self restraint 😛Got me some wholemeal bread ($2) (comes with 2 slices for one serving), poached eggs ($6), smashed avocados ($6), smoked salmon slices ($8) and their house made dark roasted peanut butter ($1) (made from burnt peanuts). Prefer the smoked ocean trout they used to have on their menu to the current smoked salmon. The pimp my breakfast section became a lot smaller too!

The classics but missing the bacon and baked beans. Toasted sourdough ($2) with fry ups ($6), roasted mushrooms ($6), house-made pork ($6) and beef sausage ($6), house made kaya ($1) (flowy consistency but packed with great flavor!) The pork sausage (longer one) was a lot juicer compared to beef!

Refreshing drink that taste like you are having alcohol it is actually the ginger. $7++

It seems like this dessert was really popular. A savoury banana cake topped with banana cuts and nuts. Appetite for after meal. $15++

Do remember to make reservation as we waited for more than 1 hour only get to enter.

They have different menu for every weekend, do check it out on their website.

The baked egg was prepared with tomato sauce. with spicy taste when you bite the lamb. Not a big portion but definitely a warm comfort food. $22++

Ordered this for delivery during the Circuit Breaker and it was wonderful, BUT nothing beats having @thelokalsingapore’s housemade Banana Bread right on their premises.
Served warm, it comes in a generous big block and is lavished in caramelised bananas and yogurt (both made from scratch in-house too). Then, on go toasted macadamia nuts and for the finishing touch, grated lime zest. So in every bite there’s fragrance, warmth, sweetness, mushiness, buttery crunch and a teensy bright note of citrus freshness. I still think it’s extraordinarily yums, like it‘s always been from my first taste of it a couple of years ago.

Chef-owner Darren (@fuzzychef) shared with me when I dropped by last night that @thelokalsingapore is now open from Wednesdays to Sundays and serves their Brunch Menu from 9am to 9pm. That’s not to say they have stopped their Dinner Menu because it’s available in the evening but if you get a craving for Bacon & Eggs for dinner, or feel like doing things your way via their “Pimp My Breakfast” option (there are 15 items to choose from), you now know where to go. I actually really like the sound of that and plan to check it out soon.
