Their fresh boneless red garoupa fish slices are thick and bouncy, meaty with clean sweet savoury flavour.
.
Garnishes of lettuce, garland chrysanthemum, ginger, and preserved mustard greens, lend a crisp crunch, with robust vegetal earthy bitter spice salty sweet flavour.
.
The soup tends towards the salty savoury side, so most folks add on the tender minced pork, to balance with its meaty sweet savoury notes. Nicely paired with white rice.

However, price point is premium, among the more expensive renditions.

Long queue during a weekday lunch here.
They still have a wide variety of fishes, except now pomfret is always not avaliable on the menu anymore.
While queuing up, had my heart set on the more premium grouper fish slices, alas, it was sold out by the time it was my turn. Decided to get the batang fish slices instead.
The disappointment of missing out on the grouper didn't last long though, as I was delighted by how fresh and nice the batang fish slices were.
There was generous amount of vegetables, fish was fresh and soft, soup was flavourful but a bit salty.
Overall quite an excellent bowl of fish soup.
Batang Fish slices... very excellent.
I kept coming back here despite the long queue because they serve really fresh and good fish soup. It is one of the places I would think of whenever I am craving fish soup or wanting to have something hot in cold weather.
The fishes here are very fresh and succulent. The soup is light and flavourful with some hints of sweetness and saltiness in it. They are very generous with the amount of fish and other ingredients they throw into the bowl. We ordered a bigger portion to share among the two of us and it was sufficient to fill both bellies 》$10 + $0.50 Minced Pork + $0.50 Bitter Gourd
The soup was tasty and relatively light, but got a little more salty at the bottom due to the bits of the shallots and whatnot. The batang fish slices were fresh, succulent and had a good bite! However, the pomfret was slightly fishy, with many small bones present - I’ll say go for the batang. We added minced pork (+$0.50) for one of the bowls and it is a good addition, as it was well seasoned and tender, bringing extra flavour to the soup. P.s. the rice is very dry, not a big fan.
We queued ~1 hour for this for a weekend lunch. It’s a good place for fish soup, and I would probably revisit if I was in the area / the queues are shorter, but Han Kee at Amoy still takes the spot as #1 :)
Not only is Upper Serangoon Road a hub for late-night🌃 supper spots, but it’s also where First Street Teochew Fish Soup is operating to serve only the breakfast and lunch crowds. Be prepared to witness a snaking long queue around the coffee shop and expect to wait for up to 30-45 minutes! For those that are bored of the usual Batang fish, you can also go for their Red Garoupa or Pomfret which comes with a higher price-tag.

。
What stood out most to me was their fresh and succulent slices of Batang fish that devoid of any fishy aftertaste. Perfectly sliced to the right thickness, the generous amount of fish slices will surely give you the best bang for your buck💸. As for the broth, it was great but not mind-blowing🤯.
。
P.S. Will definitely opt to add minced pork ($0.50) next time! And maybe fish roe ($1.50) too😋
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fresh, thick and succulent slices of mackerel, tang o, thin slices of ginger and garnished with fried shallots in a soup full of sweetness and goodness. One of the few places I would think of should I crave for a bowl of sliced fish soup. There's always a queue so be prepared to brave the heat for this worthwhile bowl of fish soup. We added minced pork and we definitely made the right choice. Another thing I liked was their salted fermented soy bean (tau cheo) chili dip 》$10/large + $0.50 Minced Pork + $0.50 Rice
Come as early as you can (before 11am) to avoid the queue at this Upper Serangoon Road stall. Everyone's here for a premium version of fish soup — they use Red Garoupa or Pomfret. The Red Garoupa Fish Soup (from $9) features more than 10 slices of fish and tang oh in a beautifully sweet broth. Comparatively, the Pomfret Fish Soup (from $11) is pricier but will suit pomfret-lovers well. Add bak chor for $0.50 for a substantial boost to your meal! P.s. Also try the Mixed Soup (from $5) with prawns, fishcakes, fish maw and mackerel.

We have tried various combo but our favourite is still the batang with minced pork ($6/$8/$10) with additional $0.50 for the bak chor. This $8 bowl comes with lots of thickly sliced fish and vegetables. The higher price tag is justified by the sheer quality and quantity. Do come before 11am or else be prepared to wait an hour.
A bit out of the way but I would return. There’s sooo much fish given for the price ☺️
Not blown away by this fish soup amidst the long queue. Pros are many slices of fish. Cons Batang usually no bones but my friend had 2 bones, long and short + the soup base very normal.
Almost missed it but we were FINALLY early enough to get a portion of fish eggs! Don’t think my love for First Street Teochew Fish Soup is going to die any time soon - the snaking queue may throw people off but it’s so worth it. You’ll always get a full bowl of tender fish slices along with that shiok savoury broth! Though not exceptional, the fish eggs were fresh and was a nice addition to have.
Price: $5
Soup was slightly salty but the fish was shockingly tender and smooth. I am not a fan of fish soup so I wasn’t expecting much but was greeted with a pleasant surprise.
Went during lunchtime (12pm) - we were almost caught in the lunch crowd but were lucky enough to be ahead of them by a few mins. Had our fish soups served in ~10 mins but the owners did say an average wait time could last from 20-40 mins. The queue really forms quick so they ain’t lying! Be ready to brave the heat but this fish soup is a must try for me.

Haven’t had this in a while and I’m reminded again why I love it so much + why I am willing to wait in the heat for it HAHAHA. Just the most affordable option of batang fish is already impressive! The generous fresh slices are always thick and chunky yet tender with a good bite. Please make sure you top up for the minced meat because it adds that extra oomph to the comforting clear broth! Also, I personally prefer to opt out of the fried onions to retain its original flavours. If you want to try something different, they also have pomfret and red garoupa to choose from.
$11, $11, $10 portion pictured. Bak chor added at $0.50).

As I was sick for the past few days, I've been eating healthy food such as this. But I can have this more often, cos this fish soup is now in my list of favourites fish soup in Singapore. The soup was sweet and has that umami from their use of 炸扁鱼.
🔸
Regardless of whether you choose the Batang (Mackerel) fish or the Red Garoupa, they were all very fresh and tender. I therefore wouldn't recommend the pomfret, which aren't as fresh as the Batang and Garoupa.
🔸
And you'll need to remember to ask them to add the minced pork, it transforms the fish soup into something like a cross between that and that of the bak chor mee soup. Really special.
🔸
Look at that amount of ingredients in this bowl of mixed seafood soup. It has fish, prawns, sotong, fish maw and minced pork swimming in a sweet broth that has umami from their use of 炸扁鱼.
🔸
With the optional addition of minced pork, the fish soup is transformed into something like a cross between that and that of the bak chor mee soup. Really special, and this is currently one of my top few favorite fish soup.
Now that it’s famous, I had to wait 1hr! Still good though! I ordered what they called a “hybrid” - mackerel and red garoupa add bak chor... clean tasting with fresh fish that breaks off in your mouth instead of mushes up when you chew it. 8.5/10 #firstworldproblems #burpple
Haven’t seen such a looong queue for fish soup apart from Piao Ji and Han Kee! We finally got our orders after 45 minutes and oh my, we’d come back and do this again 😂 We topped up $0.50 for the minced meat and I’d highly recommend to do so, cause it added that extra umami to the broth - even though the original clear and clean tasting broth was already good on its own with thin slices of crunchy salted veg! The fresh fish slices were the exact type I love too, tender yet had a good firm bite. The only thing I didn’t quite like was the slightly clumpy bowl of white rice (+$0.50). The bigger bowls for batang fish are at $8/$10, and there’s also red garoupa and pomfret to choose from.
I feel that this fish soup is so much better than piao ji! Had the batang fish soup ($6 small portion) with added minced meat (50 cents) and rice (50 cents). Although the queue was a good 40mins, it was worth the wait imo! The soup was made of ikan bilis! Silky smooth fish as well (when I hate eating batang fish at home). And there's no added charges if u wish to take more chilli (the other place charges for additional chilli sauce!) #burpple #burpplesg
