Who knew Island Café does Western better than their signatures? 😜 Albeit not the best I've had, I enjoyed the soft tacos with crispy fillets better than its signature laksa. Perhaps the tacos would score more points if the wasabi slaw was more pungent and spicier. 😄
Island Café & Bar is running a set menu promotion for only $22 for any main items (including western and signatures) with a choice of home-brewed tea. 😉
I have a habit of cutting the tower of crispy egg and tofu into chunks to absorb the thick and sweet kecap manis. 😋 Though the gravy at Island is lighter but the tauhu telor did remained a degree of crispiness even after I finished my mains. 😊
Island Café & Bar is running a set menu promotion until 16 June 2017. Choose any main course and a choice of home-brewed drink for $22. You can choose those mains that are on the higher end to make the best out of this deal!
I'll give it to Island for putting that much of ingredients into a bowl of laksa which probably explains its price tag but I prefer my laksa gravy with flavourful dried shrimps and spicy shiokness. Island Laksa seems to suit the "ang moh pai" more as the spiciness is significantly toned down with much milkiness comparable to latte. Too lemak too jelak. Oh and it was my first time having laksa noodles with crunchy shreds of cucumber. Comforting to know that I'm getting veggies while downing this bowl of high-calorie noodles but they didn't go that well together. It's not my kind of laksa but glad that I finally tried the well-known attas laksa! 😅

My final verdict...cannot make it. Overdosed on coconut in this Laksa, not sure if that's even the selling point. A Laksa with 1 prawn and 1 king prawn, $22 before GST. Ain't coming back for this.

Then back to Christmas shopping downstairs at @tangssg. I think it has become a ritual, I sit with baby at a corner at customer service while the ladies at home shop the whole building. Hahahhahaha.
I visited this café in Level 4 of TANGS at Tang Plaza upon recommendation by a friend. They serve a number of Asian dishes and a few Western selection.
I went for this Prawn Fried Hokkien Mee with a King Prawn (S$23.00). The flavours are rich and the portion is appropriate. Then again I guess because I know of my favourite hawker stall to deal with that fried Hokkien noodles fix, I suppose this is still on the steep side (like all other main courses in here). Comparatively their cakes and drinks are "more pocket friendly", so given the ambience I think this is a good place for those afternoon catch-ups with your friends.
The prawn indeed is big! This is one of the signature dishes at @islandcafebar . They recently just undergone a revamp . Great to rest your legs after shopping .. Do you know that the great Singapore sales has started ! 😱🤗
Didn't know about this cafe tucked in the corner of Tangs at Tang Plaza until @hungrybaker introduced it to me. Humongous and hearty portions of local cuisine. This Island Jumbo Prawn Laksa ($24) has been a signature since 1993 and comes highly recommended!
I have quite mixed feelings about this place. Firstly, the atmosphere is great and I love the set up and decor of the place! However, the service was average and they ran out of napkins at 6.00 p.m (regular dinner hour) which was quite disappointing. The food was slightly too salty and was served in one lump, as in, the appetisers and main course were served together. It's the small things that matter in service. Overall, lovely place to relax for awhile, if you're willing to fork out a tad little more cash. Crazy Duck salad at SGD$18
Been eyeing Island Café & Bar for years, so I was really happy I finally got jio'd by @ksherena to try it out. As you walk in, the bustling ambience is chic and everyone looks so happy eating. I must say it's probably one of those cases where it's more the people you're eating with that makes the meal enjoyable rather than the meal itself.
As the restaurant was full, we sat outside amongst the greenery, by the small water feature, under the fan that somewhat cooled us from the torturous weather. Love the concrete-top tables, they're great for taking photos. The company was great… ok I'm trying to list out all the good points first.
The bad points I guess would have to be the disappointing food & service. At that price point, you would think that they could do much better. The Laksa that we heard good reviews about was watery and just tasted like stock with blobs of orange oil. No hearty coconut milk and no spiciness at all. Even the pre-made laksa pastes that you buy off the shelf could beat this hands down. It was weird how when we said we wanted cockles in the Laksa, they were still served as a side dish though—why not just chuck it in the soup?
The Hae Mee (Prawn Noodles) was somewhat decent, the soup base was a little weak in flavour, but acceptable. What I found totally unacceptable was that my Prawn Noodles had NO prawns… like ZERO! I dug through the bowl looking for the prawns which the menu clearly states is one of the ingredients and hello… it's PRAWN noodles right? Prawn noodles with no prawns… totally blew my mind away, talk about being abstract. Maybe they jumped into the Laksa…
The Tauhu Telor was probably the best out of the 3 dishes, but unanimously voted equally disappointing. The Tauhu was too chunky and there wasn't enough sauce to go around. For a good Tauhu Telor at a similar price point, go to the Kopitiam at Swisshotel in my opinion.
They even put that they served us FOC crackers in the receipt, but they were pretty much… non-existent. Service could definitely be improved though, especially that of the manager. Would write more but damnit text limit!

Although the price was at a steeper side, but I think it was really worth it. The gravy was very flavourful and there were so many ingredients (chicken, quail eggs, cockles, prawns, tau pok, fish cake and a HUGE tiger prawn) in it.
Slices of roast duck smeared with chilli-spiked hoisin sauce and kewpie mayonnaise, layered with sliced cucumber, and dusted with toasted black and white sesame seeds, all in a tight fluffy mantou hug. Ok, that's all.
Big #juicyprawns with a generous helping of #cockles. Portion is so huge I should probably have shared this though. Lol. Tummy is now stuffed and satisfied. 🤗 lovely place for a perfect #Sundaybrunch
With a list of ingredients that sounds more at home in a salad menu, it's the whiff of "wok hei" that gives the element of "zi char" authenticity to this fried rice. Unfortunately, I didn't see most of the superfoods anywhere in there, namely the spinach, sunflower seeds or quinoa. But at least the promised ginkgo nuts showed up. It was joined by beansprouts, long beans, tofu, cabbage, soya beans, asparagus and egg. Not quite "superfoods" but oh well.
I assume this discrepancy issue between what's described in the menu and what is actually served has to do with Island Cafe & Bar being re-opened for less than a month. Trust all will be resolved soon and this dish will actually be true to its name.
Re-opened for less than a month, Tang's Island Cafe & Bar is looking much more stylish with its new contemporary design. The menu has also undergone a refreshment although I think the "gado gado" already existed in the old menu.
This Asian salad is not a bad choice if you want something vegetarian and tummy-filling. Besides the small cubes of "ketupat" (compressed rice cake) and steamed potatoes, there were crispy "tempeh", blanched long beans and beansprouts, fried tofu, cooked carrot, hard-boiled egg and "emping" crackers - all to be enjoyed with the thick, mildly-spicy peanut sauce served separately in a small bowl.
I have to admit to being a little taken aback by the non-appearance of the spinach, edamame, pumpkin and quinoa that were listed in the menu. Hopefully that's not a permanent thing because those ingredients were what intrigued me enough to order the dish in the first place. I do wish the staff had informed me of this rather than leaving me to discover it for myself only upon eating.
Recently opened, Island Cafe Express is a concept by Island Cafe which serves simple brunches and sandwiches with a couple of bakes at the basement opposite Krispy Kreme at TANGS. Coconut Tart shines from the other tarts available in the display, such as Lemon Meringue, and despite it being initially a tad stiff and hard to cut, the baked desiccated coconut core lines with a layer of Kaya at the bottom was pretty light and refreshing, carrying strong flavours of coconut throughout the tart. A tad pricey at $8 before GST and Service Charge, which is rather surprising for a dining concept like this.
The spicy coconut curry itself was decent but not outstanding. The ingredients however, were pretty interesting: fish maw, boiled chicken pieces, two big, fresh de-shelled prawns, "tau pok" and half a hard-boiled egg. The one thing I have to say that didn't sit well at all with me was the practically raw beansprouts. I wish they had blanched it a little longer.
When I enquired if I could have a mix of "bee hoon" and yellow noodles (the menu stated the dish as having only the latter), the waiter asked without missing a beat, if I preferred the thin or thick type. Now, that's very good service for you. The service is also partly the reason why I'm fine with with paying the higher prices at this air-conditioned eatery located on the fourth level of Tang's.
This is high-class "zi char" with Wagyu beef incorporated into an otherwise classic dish. And wow, does it work wonderfully.
The intoxicating "wok hei" fragrance permeated the rice noodles thoroughly while the beef slices were every bit as buttery tender as I'd hoped. It's apparent a deft hand controlled the amount of black beans used in the cooking as it didn't overpower the dish, which could have easily been the case.
A hidden gem in bustling Orchard Road, this smart casual eatery that's tucked away on the fourth level of Tang's department store, offers a cool respite from the crazy throngs of shoppers below.
