More Reviews of good food at Jai Thai (Purvis Street)

Steamed tofu with chicken basil @ $10+

Tofu is nice and soft, goes well with the sauce. Wish there's a bit more minced meat.

Tom yum seafood soup with chilli paste @ $9+

Good balance of taste and not overly spicy. This is for small size and there's quite some ingredients (fish, sotong, prawn).

Many dishes here to choose from and can also get single person's meals. Will be back again.

Jai Thai is my default place for a good plate of pad Thai - it is always good .

Sufficient wok hei , sufficiently moist , not too sweet , not too oily , nice al dente noodles .

And if this is not enough - it is also really affordable .

Added 1 dollar this time for extra eggy-ness . It either out really nice .

The lunch set comes with rice and a glass of beverage. The soup is quite spicy and you cannot literally avoid chilies in every spoon of the soup. Ingredients include squit, fish slices and prawns.

Perhaps appealing more to the lunch crowd in the vicinity, the dinner service on a weekday seemed to be quieter than I would expect. But I knew of Jai Thai as a restaurant serving authentic Thai food at affordable prices, so no surprise to how I would walk down Purvis Street to have this.

And so their Tom Yum Soup (S$8.00 for Small portion) had sufficient sour and spicy flavours to go with the relatively decent portion of seafood, including prawn, dory and squid, coupled with an assortment of mushrooms. Honestly, just one of this with a bowl of brown rice would be a satisfying dinner for me, only that I would subconsciously compare this with that from their Clover Avenue outlet...

Had mixed platter, mango salad, Deep Fried Sea bass with Chilli Sauce, Pad Thai, Fried Kang Kong and Fried Rice with Chicken Basil Leaf. We ordered medium size for most of the dishes. Food is generally pretty nice and the portion is quite suitable to be shared among 5. I’m particularly impressed by the fried rice which is really hot and spicy.

I have tried pad thai in many places and I still keep coming back to Jai thai because they do it my way - the way I like it .

The pad thai is not oily at all ( how is that even possible ???) , not too sweet and the noodles are of a q q texture .

My only complaint is the crystal looking prawns...

Will remember to open for my usual vegetarian phad thai the next time round 😊

Very affordable thai food in central area .

Such a hearty dish of warm silken toufu drenched with a tasty thai basil chicken sauce that’s not too salty.

Pair it rice ( lots and lots ) 😝.

A good variation from the usual prawn Claypot tang hoon ( vermicelli) is this beancurd Claypot tang hoon.

You can the same tasty vermicelli cooked in a myriad of aromatics , white peppercorns and spring onions and nice juicy pieces of pan fried beancurd.

This is the only place I can find this Claypot beancurd variation and the vermicelli is cooked till perfection every time - neither too greasy Nor too dry - just the right balance .

Crispy pieces of battered fish in a sweet and Savory basil sauce - very addictive.

You can opt to add on a fried egg ( which is done so beautifully ) with a flowy yolk .

One of my choice options for value for money thai food in town .

these desserts were really good with very authentic and rich flavours. the tapioca cake was served warm, soft and tender while still retaining a bite. the coconut milk that came w it was flavourful enough too. the red ruby was creamy and icy at the same time with fresh and crunchy water chestnut bites 🤤

This was honestly just mediocre as the beef could have been more tender and flavourful than it was, defo had other better dishes here ~~~ but still decent!

trying out the thai food here for the first time — the prawn omelette was light, fluffy and crisp (altho the prawn was barely existent) while the clear tomyum seafood soup was pretty decent (not super spicy!! more of the sweet and sour undertones). the ingrediernts were of a decent portion too. the mixed veg was nice but nothing special and the portion could be more for a medium sized!

Jai thai has one of the best Tom yum soups .

The broth is flavoured with very generous aromatics ( Lemongrass , galangal, kaffir lime ) and of course a generous wallop of chilli paste that makes this a fiery treat .

The prawns add a touch of the taste of the sea to this otherwise already very tasty soup .

Recommended to have this with a bowl of rice and for the health conscious - you will be happy to know that Jai thai serves brown rice .

I acclaim this the most “reliable pad thai “ because anytime I needed a good pad thai , Jai thai would be the default place .

The noodles are QQ and the pad thai is neither too oily nor too sweet , just the right balance of flavours .

The prices at Jai thai are also very very affordable a - making it my default place for thai food in general .

Do also try the basil chicken steamed tofu , prawns Claypot vermicelli and the tamarind fried fish slices - very outstanding dishes .

Pandan chicken has been one of my favourites of the thai cuisine ever since I was a child. I love watching how my parents would unwrap the shy looking chicken wrapped in Pandan leaves.

The Pandan chicken at jai thai is well marinated with spices , tasty and fried till golden brown . The best part is that you can order these Pandan chicken in pieces of 2,3,4 and so on. Each piece costs 2.50 but be forewarned that 3 pieces to be shared amongst a couple is quite a portion given how generous each piece of chicken is .

Be sure to pair the pandan chicken with their housemade sour and spicy green chilli sauce.

I love Jai Thai’s version of this Claypot vermicelli with prawns . It is neither too oily Nor salty Nor overly saucy Nor too dry - just the right amount of sauce and seasoning against a fragrant undertone of garlic , onions and spring onions.
The serving of prawns are generous and the prawns are pretty fresh too :)
The vermicelli is well cooked and QQ - soaking up every bit of the prawn flavour. Slices of mushrooms have also been added to soak up all the beautiful flavours.

A very well executed dish and standards have been consistently good every time 😊

For 14 dollars ,I would say that this dish is really value of money . One would ordinary find this dish costing 18 to 25 dollars at most other thai restaurants.

What a glorious combination !

Piquant basil with minced chicken and chilli in brown gravy over silken tofu.

You definitely need some rice to soak up all the goodness of the gravy .

The fruitiness and zingy- ness of the basil came through without being overly strong - just the right kick that you need to spice the plain silken toufu😊
