This is undoubtedly the best oyster omelette you can get from our hawkers. The εˆθ¨˜θšη…Žθšθ›‹ at stall number 73 of Newton Hawker Centre just gets more and more popular. Waiting time is a minimum of 30 minutes. After you have wolfed down your 松記 fishball kway teow and ice kachang, your omelette may still not be ready. However, it's still all worth the wait, the patience of its loyal customers, despite the many other stalls selling oyster omelette at Newton, is testiment that Hup Kee's a few notches above the rest. Using fresh and plump oyster is key. It brings out so much of the flavours. I can't think of any other oyster omelette at hawker stalls that even come close. A plate of small order at $6 comes with more than a dozen of oysters. Next generous amount of eggs are used. Many oyster omelette uses too much of the tapioca starch which ends up as a gooey mash especially when the frying is over done. Hup Kee's oil used its just nice. You can see it from my picture that there is no excess oil on the plate. Last but not least the tangy chili sauce that comes with the omelette is "home modified", what I came to know from the boss after "Olo-ing" about how fantastic his omelette is compared to others.

$18.90 for a bowl of noodles in a market food centre? YES BECAUSE THERE'S A WHOLE LOBSTER IN THERE (plus shells and prawns)! The broth didn't disappoint and will satisfy all sorts of crustacean cravings. It was garlicky, sweet from the fresh seafoods and packed with umami goodness - just imagine the beehoon soaking up all these flavours, mmm hmm!

It's not that obvious in the photo but this came with a huge serving of noodles and works rather well for sharing between 2 if you're not too hungry. Other noodle soup options include normal prawns, 'sumo' big prawns and crayfish, along with other dishes like Japanese Lala Soup and Grilled Clams.

Sumo is managed by young hawkers and their offerings have been selling out quite quickly, so head down earlier or drop a call to them at 92992621 before dropping by.

At that point (and still is), it was one of the best western grilled chicken. The light spiciness from the Cajun spices and moist meat together with their "comfort" side - cheese baked mashed potato. Life was too good to be real. .

During my poly days, whenever we want something more affordable at the city, we will go for Botak Jones at the Somerset Outlet. Their Cajun Chicken still tasted as good and the big portion side - Cajun fries - was able to fill the hungry boys. .
|
Times passed, even after I started work, I was still able to find their outlet near Tuas Ship Yard. Same old juicy chicken. However to reduce the effect of the expanding waistline, I replaced my favorite cheese baked potato with house salad. .

Sadly, their glory days didn't lasted. Because the boss suffered from the depression and constant stress, their island wide outlets were closing down like flies. When I thought that they will be gone for good, I saw their name appeared on newspaper. Hundred of thousands in debt but the boss didn't gave up. Rebrand the stall and reopened at where he began as BIG BERN'S! Not only the taste brought back memories, it tasted even better than the past.

Back for the 2nd time at Lee Fun Nam Kee for their soy sauce chicken. This time around we were earlier and managed to have their noodles and ngo xiang as well. The noodles were springy and tastes good as it is or with the soy sauce chicken. What I really enjoyed was the ngo xiang which had a very crispy bean curd skin and juicy stuffed minced meat and prawn. Though it was slightly crumbly as the meat did not hold well together, the burst of texture and flavor was just delicious! This place is definitely one of the hidden gems in Toa Payoh I would say.

Recommended by the butcher from the wet market downstairs, this stall always sells out quickly and we finally got to try it yesterday. After a grueling wait due to their many customers, this spread that only costs $34 (for 6 ppl!) arrived in cute, homely claypots. While I found the dishes slightly too oily for my taste, the wok hei was undeniable. Order the generous serving of ε§œθ‘±pork liver that has that tender, "medium rare" perfectness.

Congrats to Mr and Mrs Soo for making it to the Michelin Bib Gourmand! Mr Soo was in high spirits when I was there. Beaming with joy, he told me, "δ½ ηŸ₯ι“ζˆ‘ηš„ζ±€ζ˜―ζ€ŽδΉˆη†¬ηš„ε—οΌŸζˆ‘ζ—©δΈŠη”¨εΉ²θ΄οΌŒεΉ²θšοΌŒθ™Ύη±³οΌŒε’ŒδΈ€η‚Ήη‚Ήζ€°ζ΅†οΌŒζ―ε€©η†¬δΈ€δΈͺε°ζ—Άβ€œ (he was telling me how he cook his gravy)

Their efforts resulted in light and fragrant stock that is not salty, not heavy, with pleasant sweetness from the scallops and light umami lift from the oysters. Every ingredient in that bowl was fresh, I can't take cockles usually but I could finish them cos it was fresh. Crayfish was small, but cooked just nicely so it was juicy and very tender.

Cheaper options available, from $3 onwards. The $3 option will be good enough because the magic is in the stock. The $7 option came with crayfish which is very small but very good, it's a bonus if you have the budget.

Even though there was a queue at 1:00pm, I didn’t have to wait long as bowls of ban mien was served to diners at a fast rate. Naturally, I went for their signature, the Dry Chilli Ban Mee ($5), and I was clearly satisfied at the end of it. The dry chili mixture brought a slight spicy kick and after mixing it together with the poached egg, black fungus, fried shallots, minced meat and anchovies, you are in for a comforting lunch. The choice of these simple ingredients complimented with each other, and in the process, able to make the entire bowl shine brightly in the spotlight.

2nd stop: Sin Huat Eating House (famous for duck rice, zi char and turtle soup)
When we first arrived, the place looked closed. Thankful that the uncle was only hiding behind the counter. .

Just by pouring the hot water into the coffee powder, the smell was incredible. The smell itself was able to waken my spirit. The toast he used was common but the way he grilled it was special. How often you see a charcoal grilled toast in Singapore??? Next time I would prefer to go in the afternoon, other stalls were then opened. .

The cream cakes are good & cheap! Ranging from $2-4 with many varieties to choose from. So quaint that the price tags are all still handwritten.

This is the bomb. Such a pity that the portion is small. Cause it's so delish, the skin is downright crunchy crispy. Yummy.
