Catching up over a long overdue meal at a Hainanese western steak & seafood restaurant with an old-school charm. And nothing brings me more joy than sharing a hearty meal with my dear friend @shook_wai of 34 years.

Their signature Hainanese pork chop is one of my favourites. It feature an uber crispy, golden brown crust and beautifully thin slice of pork chop with a faint pink center, paired with this delightfully savoury tomato ketchup worcestershire sauce! The sirloin steak is decent and substantial though slightly overcooked. But the show stealer is definitely the baked potato with crispy garlic 🧄 bits, and generously slathered with sour cream and spring onions! 🫶🏻

I also can’t resist ordering some of their well-loved starters including fresh oysters 🦪 and escargots smothered in garlic butter. ☺️

Oh yeah! A leisure lunch on a weekday afternoon. What more could I ask for!

Visited Mariners’ Corner, an old-school Hainanese Western restaurant located at Sunset Way today. We ordered their sirloin steak 🥩 in medium-rare that came with soup, garlic bread, a drink and dessert @ $16.50++. And I have to mention that the set lunch here is generous in portion and good value for money.

Totally ❤️ the nostalgic charm and retro-pop songs 🎶 being played in the background! 🫶🏻

Had the oxtail soup and house wine. The oxtail soup was beefy and rich in flavour, with the beef falling off the bone. It came quickly and was served piping hot as well. The house wine was decent.

You can turn any main into a set by topping up about $5 to add a soup, salad, coffee/tea, and a small dessert.

The only drawback is that the price is quite high, it was over $70 for two of us (2 mains + top up for 1 set + 1 glass house white wine)

Does sizzling steak on a hot plate ignites a certain excitement in you?

As a child growing up in the Eighties, it was a treat whenever my parents brought us to Western eateries for a meal.

We finally had the time to visit Mariners’ Corner at Sunset Way today. This has been on my bucket 🪣 list for such a long time.

Ordered their sirloin steak in medium-rare which arrived on a sizzling hot plate. This sight immediately brings back memories of my favourite childhood.

The steak packs beefy flavour and surprisingly tender; [add-on] baked potato is generously slathered with sour cream, spring onions and fried garlic [an unexpected alternative to bacon bits] is simply delicious!

got their set lunch which came with a soup of the day, garlic bread, mains, coffee / tea and a dessert

soup of the day was pumpkin soup which i enjoyed because it wasn’t too thick

fish was well grilled with crispy edge. the garlic shallot sauce was really good and the mashed potato was great as well

Mariner's corner recently shifted here to Clementi.

Expect to queue long time during lunch time if u are walking in, please make reservations before coming.

Steak was cooked just the way I requested it, medium.

Usual price: $28

Weekday set lunch price: $23

The set comes with:
-drink
-soup
-garlic bread
- dessert

Additional $2 to change sides to baked potato.

Overall steak tasted quite good. Potato nice but somehow not as shiok as Jack's place.

Staff here are very friendly.

Will return again for sure, but during lunch time, so it's cheaper. 😀

Have returned to this restaurant multiple times as the steak is good. Set meal comes with garlic bread, soup of the day, main, slice of butter/pound cake and a choice of coffee or tea. Decor is very old school, service is fantastic and fast. Raw oysters, lamb shank and oxtail stew are good too. Free parking in building.

$19.50 chicken chop with baked potatoes. Sizzling hot and crisp

The dinner set came with free flow salad bar, drink, and a dessert. For under $30. Cosy and quiet place for dinner.

Meat was tender, not overcooked. Good value for the price.

Mariners’ Corner is one of the few places that serves traditional English bakes nowadays. Also available for purchase, their bakes are the type of pound cakes which are heavily buttered like this mixed fruit cake. Dense and oily, the butter aroma and taste are really strong but that’s also what gives the moist texture of the cake. Custard sauce was poured over the cake when served. I was a little worried that it would be too sweet but it wasn’t. Instead a little milky and went well with the cake, although sticky.

I always love coming to Mariners’ Corner for its cozy ambience and it’s old-school decoration which gives a homely feeling, a place to enjoy traditional western food. Therefore I was really looking forward to their Christmas menu.

Disappointingly, it fell short of expectations. The traditional roast turkey was nicely done, lightly flavored though the meat was naturally more chewy and dry. However, the honey baked turkey ham was a turned off. It was thick, starchy and plasticky, as if it was artificially made. Thankfully the chestnut stuffing was fine. A little animalic overall which was expected from the giblet sauce. I wished they had bothered changing the side dish for different main courses.

Half Lobster Combo with Pacific Dory Fish ($31) satisfied your craving for both oven baked succulent lobster & tender fresh dory 😘
.
NZ Prime Rib ($26.50) slow roasted with onion gravy so tender & juicy 😋
.
King Prawn Combo with NZ Sirloin Steak ($22) totally wowed me with the oven baked prawns with dijon mustard cream sauce & mozarella cheese! Slightly disappointed though with the steak that was dry & a bit tough 😜
.
Overall we still love the food, ambience & friendly staff here 😍 This place is full of our fond memories 😁
