More Reviews of good food at Mui Kee Congee 妹记生滚粥品 (Shaw Centre)

Congee-centric restaurant located on the third floor of Shaw Centre. Service is bright, full of smiles, and efficient. Tables were slightly too close for comfort, and my partner was bothered by some (water?) stains on the cushioned sofa seats. Food-wise, the Pork Meatballs Congee ($10.90) came piping hot and satisfyingly thick. Elevate the taste with the light sauce and white pepper provided on each table, or choose to upgrade to a set (+$5) for a stick of youtiao, half a century egg, and a drink of your choice to complement the congee. I especially liked the youtiao for being not too oily. However, if I had to choose a favourite from my meal, it would definitely be the Golden Crispy Prawn Cake ($13.90) - so flavourful, juicy, with distinct chunks of prawn, and a delightful crunch from the cubes of water chestnut within. Delicious! If I were to share any complaint, it would be that the prices lean toward the steeper side, with this entire meal costing us almost $36 which would be outrageous if the food wasn't this satisfying. However, restaurants specialising in congee are a dime a dozen in the Orchard area so do pop by for a try!

The congee is very good, and served with a great variety of proteins: fish of different kinds, frog legs, pork liver, etc. However, due to poor management , service is a disaster. Two congees ordered at the same time, but one arrived 10 minutes after the other. At a table next to us, it arrived after the other customers had finished theirs. Should be located at a hawker centre rather than as a member of Les Amis group at Shaw!

Mui Kee is a culinary gem that specializes in Cantonese porridge. While their porridge dishes are undoubtedly the stars of the show, their claypot creations are equally impressive.

The porridge itself is a work of art. It's smooth, creamy, and flavorful, with a delicate balance of savory and subtle sweetness. I particularly enjoyed the century egg porridge, which was incredibly comforting and satisfying. The century egg added a unique depth of flavor that complemented the porridge perfectly.

We did try the claypot frog leg and claypot beef brisket, both of which were absolutely delicious. The frog legs were cooked to perfection, with the meat tender and juicy. The sauce was a savory blend of spices that complemented the frog legs perfectly. The claypot beef brisket was also excellent, with the beef soft and tender. The sauce was rich and flavorful, with a hint of sweetness.

Very long never eat this. Still a notch above generic porridges. Fragrant congee, fresh fish, large crunchy meatballs I'm guessing have cartilage or tendon.

One of us decided to go for noodle instead of congee and it didn't disappoint! The noodle is springy & its portion is really generous and more than enough for a person. Sliced fish and Dace fish ball are also plenty in the bowl. 👌
.
Sides are soup and wanton 🥟 (super crispy with mayo dipping). If you request extra chilli, you will get sambal style and sliced chilli to pick from). sambal chilli is nice for noodle whereas sliced chilli is well matched with congee. Pay $1 extra for cold drink and well worth it for fighting heat wave! 🥵

Our second visit to Mui Kee Congee at Shaw centre. We gotta admit that we miss their congee when they first opened back then. The congee is still silky smooth although we can notice shrinkflation for each component. We will overlook that because we simply enjoy congee, youteow, century eggs to the max! 👌💯 The set comes with your hot drink choice (except soursop) and valid for weekday lunch (Mon-Fri) & weekday dinner (Mon-Thurs)

Pork Meatballs Congee - $9.80

Finally get to try Mui Kee for weekend breakfast. Smooth congee that’s flavourful. Filled with QQ homemade pork meatballs, loving it! Crispy Dough Fritters not included so have to order separately ($2.50). Saw many families bringing grandparents and children there to enjoy the congee together, so heartwarming. Another lovely discovery, Mui Kee is under Les Amis Group, love love their restaurants

Ordered the signature Parrot Fish Belly porridge $11+ and Pork Innard porridge $8+ to share + extra sides (fried dough fritters & century egg & fried fritters steam rice roll)

Taste really yummy! Especially the fish belly porridge which has a hint of “charcoal grill taste from the fish”. Definitely will return for the fish porridge! They have really unique soya sauce which paired very well with the fried fritters steak rice roll (photo not included).

Total damage with drinks: >$ 50 for 3 pax

Comfort food right here. The pork balls were chewy and tasty, went well with the clean congee, which was a little sweet. They also gave about 5-6 pork balls, generous portion which made up for the price.

Had the parrot fish slice porridge every time I eat here. Standard never drops!

Hong Kong coffee and milk tea is good too!

Claypot dishes are served in the evening in lieu of cheung fun. I had the beef with ginger and spring onion. It was pretty filled with flavour and is a perfect complement to the porridge to fill up your stomach. The beef was so tender and retained its flavour in the claypot. So fragrant and mouth watering. I’ll want to try the pork liver and frog leg next time.

Feel like having Cantonese-style jook/ congee? Try Mui Kee, one of Hong Kong’s most famous congee places, in the heart of Orchard Road.

Had their signature parrot fish belly and century egg congee. The fish belly is cooked with the porridge over high heat although it contains bones. And I love how the century egg has a creamy centre, just like those you get in hing kong. Don’t forget to order some you tiao/ dough fritters to accompany your meal.

What makes the jook here special is the strong wok hei (charted) flavour. The texture of the congee is very consistent and smooth. You can’t feel the rice grains as it’s been smashed up into gruel. If Oliver Twist was served this every day, I’m sure he wouldn’t be complaining.

PSA it's located on the exterior of the building, and the sliced ginger is so Thin and numerous do ask for it to be taken out if u dont like ginger

Exceedingly smooth, this was a food bowl of Fish Congee and there wasnt any bones(take note this isnt the parrotfish belly congee which might contain bones). The Fish came in the form of Small chunks. While parrotfish is a tasty Fish, it really doesnt affect the taste of the congee that much, compared to other kinds of Fish. So not rlly worth it imo

The only place, as far as I know, that serves Wok-Hei flavoured Congee. Originating from Hongkong, this renowned chain expertly imparts the charred flavour whilst wok frying large chunks of fish into their congee broth, such a genius idea, I wonder why no one else does it. The YouTiao (dough fritters) are also a must-order item, takes a short while to get to your table, but comes out crisp and fresh fried every single time.
All their fish congees may contain bones, so please take extra caution if you’re bringing your children or older folks.
For a quick dining concept within a small space, their service was exemplary. Cheers to that @lesamisgroupsg!

The side dishes at this restaurant are either lousy (cheung fun) or very average, like this one. Eat if you must, but better to focus on the delicious congees, especially the smoky ones (eg. Alaskan crab or Parrot Fish belly).
