Whilst most bloggers invariably focus on YLX's meat options (nothing wrong with that), they also serve a really good fish & chips.
You get not one, not two but three good sized pieces of white fish that are battered and deep fried on the spot (which kinda explains the long waiting time but I digress) for only $10. Thee breaded crust is thin and crisp and the fish meat thick and flaky. It is also nicely and mildly seasoned. Whatsmore, the fish comes with a healthy (or some may say unhealthy) serving of chips, slaw and that tasty little bun.
My only complaint is that they serve the fish on top of a dollop of tartar sauce taken out of a plastic container from the fridge. The temperature contrast does a disservice to the fish and renders the piece on top of the tartar sauce soggy real quick. I am not going to name the supplier but the tartar sauce tastes lumpy and "artificial" and did not go well with the fish IMHO. Do yourself a favour and give the tartar sauce a miss!
Be prepared to queue and come ready to wait is what I will tell any #burpplers checking out Ye Lai Xiang ("YLX") at Maxwell FC.
YLX serves hainanese-style western food. Their prices are slightly higher compared to other hawkers serving similar food but I still found them rather reasonably priced considering their rather generous portions.
For $9.50, you get two rather large pieces of chicken chop which are made to order. Seared nicely on the outside, the meat remains tender and juicy. The brown sauce is a little on the weak side but we really like the fresh crinkle cut fries and the warm fluffy bun which is apparently specially sourced from a local bakery.
The portion very big. The chicken chop was grilled like teppanyaki style. It is very tender. The sauce wasnt mushroom or black pepper. Seems abit like sweet chilli but too bland for me. The fries not salted. The bread was cold and not crispy. They do give butter. The portion is worth the price but taste wise not good.
3.75โญ Finally visit Maxwell for the Western food. It's always ranked one of the best hawker western food. There was a queue when we reached for dinner and waited for abt 15min. WB ordered chicken cutlet while I ordered chicken chop. The portion is huge and served with fries, bread and mixed vege. I liked the chicken cutlet as the skin is crisp but WB prefer Wild Wild West Chicken cutlet as he find the cutlet slightly dry. The bread is soft and fluffy, I read online that the bread is sourced from a local bakery. I usually don't like such fries as this is those typical hawker/foodcourt western food type of fries and normally not very crsipy. But the fries here are crispy to my liking. Nothing to shout about on the mixed vege, it's just those frozen pack vege.

Old school hawker western food anyone๐? The Pork Chop ($7.50) from Tasty Barbecue at Maxwell Food Centre (#01-94) is very tender and the sauce is a delicious balance of sweet and savoury. It comes with a super soft bun, baked beans and fries. The size of the pork chop is very generous. Nothing too fancy, but highly satisfying.
Chicken Cutlet.

Passed this stall many times and finally had the chance to try the food! the serving size is huge - the chicken is easily 1.5x the size of that at astonโs or any of the other western chains. I liked the crispy bits on the chicken, and the chicken meat itself was cooked properly. Which, to be honest, is something that should be expected anyway. Nothing fancy about the sides, but in all the dish made for a satisfying meal. at $7.50 in the CBD, I guess it still counts as a -relatively- affordable meal if you compare it to $15 tapas and $25 main courses hahaha
The chicken cutlet served is really huge and gorgeously crispy.
And I love the way the cutlet soaks up the special brown sauce. Itโs so delicious that I even asked from the stall owner for additional serving of it on my cutlet. ๐คค

Chicken Chop: The portion was huge & also tasted delicious, while the bun was soft & the fries crispy. Overall, a value for money option for western food in the area.
Value for money western food found here! The chicken chop is huge & very yummy! The fries are crispy, and i like the bun too!
Loved the tangy brown sauce which goes really well with the old school chicken chop. The $7.50 pricetag might seem a lil expensive for hawker western food but it is justified by the huge portion. Would love to try their mixed grill next time!
Before the Western Food Stall shifted to the present Maxwell Food Centre. The Stall Owner started his business from Tanglin Halt Food Centre followed by Margret Drive Commonwealth Food Centre. Margret Dr Commonwealth Food Centre Last operation Date is on 30th June 2011. Most of the Food Stall Owner moved to Meiling Hawker Centre intially the western food stall supposed to move to Meiling Food Centre. The Stall Owner Decided that since Maxwell Hawker is a conducive place & attracted many office worker so he shifted to Maxwell Hawker after Margret Dr Hawker closed down. Fyi last time the western food stall used to work long hours now they only work weekday night time. Stall Name:Ye Lai Xiang Western Tasty BBQ. Address:1 Kadayanallur Street Stall 94 Maxwell Food Centre Singapore 069184. Operating Hours:1800-2200hrs Mon to Fri Closed on Weekends. Fyi the stall will be closed to due to lack of fresh ingredient or the stall owner need a rest.
One of the disadvantages i dislike is that the stall owner uses brown sauce . I am sugguesting black pepper so that it really goes well with the chicken chop. Never the less the portion is big & the price is reasonable Address & opening hours see my chicken chop post.
This fish and chips from Ye Lai Xiang can really put some western restaurants to shame..
Their breadcrumbs is crispy and well season throughout and underneath the layer of crunch lies a silky flesh that almost dissolve right into your mouth! Not only you have that, there's a whole arsenal of sides like fries, bake beans, vinegary coleslaw , corn, and YES!! An old classic.. The soft bun with butter! I always prefer that instead of the hard garlic 'brick' that other places give! ๐
