🦐🍜Managed to reach before the long queue struck at 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles and got myself a dry version of Prawn Mee with $2 add on prawns! The noodles were cooked slightly softer than my preference, but still very shiok when eaten with their sambal & lard bits (asked for no ketchup so I can enjoy the savory and spicy homemade chili in its unadulterated form). I lazy to peel prawns, so I am always happy to have my prawns fully peeled and butterflied in half.😆

Got really excited when I saw the orangey hue of the broth as the owner poured into the bowl! It tasted as good as it looked, packed with distinct authentic sweetness from the prawns which I enjoyed - guess it’s a sign that I should order the soup version next time!

Came all the way to Tekka Food Centre for a good bowl of prawn mee. I would usually go for their soup version as the soup is really flavour but today's weather tells me to get the dry version instead.

I had the largest bowl at $5, opting for a mix of bee hoon and mee (yellow noodle) which also come with bean sprouts and four halved prawns that have been shelled and deveined.
.
A small bowl of prawn soup is served on the side.
.
Firstly, the prawns. I loved the freshness and firm bite but that is only because sea-caught prawns like ang ka and sua lor are used. Non of that farmed nonsense is being used here.
.
Apart from that, another highlight would be the tender and chewy pork slices which is one of my favorite things to eat. I seriously could not get enough of them and should have topped up for more.
.
Next, Theron home-made sambal chili is really good and the sauce-mix coated the bee hoon/mee really well. During the tossing, I even discovered crispy pork lard hidden at the bottom of the bowl!
.
The fried shallot crisps sprinkled on the noodle deserve a mention. Just the thought of peeling all those shallots alone is enough to make me cringe however, instead of relying on ready-made supplies, the stall make their own.
.
Indeed, the effort shows as the freshly fried shallot crisps are far more superior in terms of texture and aroma compared to the stale and rancid ones from the suppliers.
.
The prawn broth is on the lighter side, but still flavorful enough with crustacean essence and a underlying pork sweetness that does not make me feel guilty for finishing it to the last drop.

545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles is an old-school prawn noodles stall which is currently run by its 3rd-generation owners.

I love that their noodles doesn't taste alkaline and their sambal is really kick-ass good. Their deep fried lard comes in big shiok chunks.

Their broth is just simply out of this world. The flavours are intense and hearty. Unlike their competitors which tend to be overwhelmingly salty, you can taste the distinct sweetness of the prawns used to cook the broth.

Definitely one of the better prawn mee I have had recently!

I enjoyed the dry version more than the soup.
The savoury spicy homemade chilli tossed in noodle, served with prawn and slice pork (the slice pork a bit tough).
💰$5.

Huge thanks to Derrick (@sgfoodonfoot) for bringing us to this gem of a prawn noodle, helmed by a young hawkerpreneur and her recipe was passed down from several generations. Between the soup and dry version, the latter was totally on a league of its own, especially when you have their homemade sambal, lard oil and fried shallots tossed in beautifully with the kway teow and yellow egg noodle to give it an umami boost. There are no fanciful ingredients, just lean pork slices, prawns and bean sprouts to make it a well-rounded bowl of prawn noodles. When you order the dry version, you will get a bowl of the prawn broth which has a slight sweetness and packed with seafood flavour that you will crave for more from each slurp.

Tried this twice and the first time I felt it was a little bland; but the second time I asked for less ketchup and more chilli and it was really good. I must say the prawns are quite disappointing because they aren’t very big/juicy/fresh. But overall a very comforting eat and my prawn mee go-to at Little India!

The sambal that was tossed with the noodles was awesome – a nice balance of spicy, savoury and dried seafood accents.

Had to try this since I am always around Tekka Centre and people all over actually make their way down just to have it — finally gave it a go after spotting a relatively short queue during lunch hours.

Opted for the smallest bowl ($4; The also have $5 and $6 portions available) and went for both ketchup and chili whilst going for Kway Teow. Must say that the Kway Teow did carry a good hint of savoury, spicy and tangy flavours when tossed around with the sauce, while the prawns were surprisingly fresh. The bowl of noodles also come with pork lard, shallots and spring onions as well. While I am no lover of Prawn Noodles (especially the soup variants) for how the broth tastes, I actually quite like how fresh this was — carrying the natural sweetness of the prawns, the broth was also left void of any unnecessary distractions considering how it did not carry an overwhelming hint of pepper. While I go for Prawn Noodles usually, this might be a bowl that I wouldn’t mind having if there isn’t much of a queue around at Tekka Centre.

Hang on & first, eat prawn noodles!
🦐
Love the traditional taste in this bowl of delicious prawn noodles which I hardly can find nowadays. It reminds me of early childhood days where I lunched with my parents after school. Now 545 Whampoa prawn noodles is manned by 3rd generation.
🦐
Mid-sized prawns were fresh and soup umami, I wiped clean the whole portion. Although there’s no kang kong veg but bean sprouts, I still enjoyed it. Happy lunching, Folks!

Came for fish soup but it wasn’t open, so we went for another soupy option (great for the weather these days)! First taste of the broth and thought it was quite rich, but subsequently, it was toned down quite a lot and lacking the prawn-y flavour, probably due to the noodles diluting it too. Not the best but still a relatively simple comforting option. Might try the dry version instead in future!

Made a trek down here since we heard Anthony Bourdain was here filming a few months back. Pretty good soup and well cooked noodles but not super kickass. But at least we didn't feel thirsty after, and for $4, it was really decent.

Dry prawn mee - the broth is not diluted by the noodles and the sambal that was tossed with the noodles was awesome – a nice balance of spicy, savoury and dried seafood accents.

Finally tried this after hearing only good things about it. Rich prawn broth. Moreish dry base with plenty of pork lard. Delish.

Looks spicy but is manageable.
Adore how the tomato paste reduces any sharp spiciness the sambal chilli, adding a tinge of sweetness.

Good to see the 3rd Gen Har Mee Soh managing the stall, though she is too busy concentrating in her cooking.
