More Reviews of good food at Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa (Hong Lim Market)

Founded by chef-owner Daniel Soo in 2000, this stall is named in tribute to the famous laksa hawkers of old who used to frequent that specific street in their trishaws.
.
Their signature broth is actually less spicy and less rich than elsewhere, as they use less coconut milk and chili in preparation.
.
Instead, there is a greater sweet savoury flavour from the use of premium ingredients simmered for over 2 hours to create their broth, including dried shrimp, fresh sea prawns, dried scallops, dried oysters, and other spices.
.
There's silky smooth thick rice vermicelli noodles with grainy sweet notes, springy fish cake with sweet savoury flavour, crisp bean sprouts with vegetal sweet flavour, spongy tofu puffs with grainy sweet spicy flavour, and laksa leaves.
.
Also crunchy deshelled prawns with sweet savoury flavour, and juicy blood cockles with mineral briny salty flavour.
.
Add the chunky sambal belachan if you wish for a greater savoury salty spicy kick.

This was literally the last bowl before the stall closed so lucky me but at the same time I can't be sure it's the normal portion.

Nonetheless, it's absolutely delicious and ingenious. Mee Siam is sweet and sour, thus it makes perfect sense to add the sweetness and sourness of the fruits to it, which leveraging their aroma. It's very harmonious and not weird at all. Slurp worthy but I'm not a fan of sour food so I don't recommend adding the lime. Their chili is strongly tangy too, not very spicy.

One of our go to stalls at Hong Lim for laksa other than BCM or CKT. Masks on everyone!

Lovely and friendly couple was definitely a good start of the food experience. Stall is known for its crayfish laksa, but decided to try the meesiam because it sounds unique!

The broth was amazingly light and refreshing, with the tanginess of the fruit juice concoction. (Not sure what’s in it, but definitely taste like normal meesiam broth!) Definitely appreciated that the broth wasn’t salty and didn’t have me reaching for water. Really tasted homemade and absolutely tasty!

Decent amount of prawns, chicken and fish cakes as well. However, may be too sour for people who aren’t accustomed to the sour flavor. But personally love it.

Long before “Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa” gained fame and the inevitable long queues, I use to frequent it as I‘d been drawn to the fact that Uncle Soo uses “real fruit juice” in his Mee Siam broth. Yes, in spite of the stall’s name, and having eaten his Laksa and Mee Rebus (he sells those too), I have always remained most fond of his Mee Siam.
When I dropped by today to have it again after more than a year, it’s still the broth that wows. It has a wonderful spark of distinct freshness and gentle sourness that makes it completely different from others. I ordered the $5 bowl which is suppose to come with prawns, fish cake and chicken but I requested for the chicken to be left out. Call me a selective purist but I didn’t think that white meat had any business being in there. Come to think of it, neither does fish cake but oh well. Anyway, I still enjoyed the dish but truth be told, it’s really the part I can slurp that keeps me enchanted.

The most awesome mee siam that's made from fruit juice that allows you to want to eat it every day without feeling super full. Plus, it's my colleague's parents. Super awesome.

Popped by to try a bowl of this - definitely lives up to its reviews, gravy was light, but doesn't lose out in taste in any way + generous portion of fresh ingredients. Also loved that the stall owners were so friendly and personable! I'd call this healthy laksa - didn't feel all that guilty having this right after my yoga class, cos it felt that light!

Congrats to Mr and Mrs Soo for making it to the Michelin Bib Gourmand! Mr Soo was in high spirits when I was there. Beaming with joy, he told me, "你知道我的汤是怎么熬的吗?我早上用干贝,干蚝,虾米,和一点点椰浆,每天熬两个小时“ (he was telling me how he cook his gravy)
🔸
Their efforts resulted in light and fragrant stock that is not salty, not heavy, with pleasant sweetness from the scallops and light umami lift from the oysters. Every ingredient in that bowl was fresh, I can't take cockles usually but I could finish them cos it was fresh. Crayfish was small, but cooked just nicely so it was juicy and very tender.
🔸
Cheaper options available, from $3 onwards. The $3 option will be good enough because the magic is in the stock. The $7 option came with crayfish which is very small but very good, it's a bonus if you have the budget.

At $4 for a bowl, an upgrade from the smallest $3 portion, you get a reasonable quantity of noodles and ingredients such as chicken meat, cockles, prawns and tofu puffs. The winning factor here was definitely the laksa broth, a much lighter version as compared to outside but you still can taste the dried prawns and coconut milk in the broth. If you feel like pampering yourself then go for the $7 portion which comes with crayfish!

Bib Gourmand (Michelin Guide Singapore 2016–2022)

Tantalises the tastebuds. Evoked the palate to want more of that scintillating flavors.

This is either you like it or you dont. As for me, I liked it for that little twist that was put into a somewhat ordinary meesiam.

Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa is located on the 2nd level of Hong Lim Food Centre.

Finally tried the sungei road laksa! 🤤 it’s famous for being cooked using charcoal✨🌝✨ it is worth the queue and wait, the broth is not as strong and oily like most laksa, it’s perfectly balanced between spice and favor🤤drink the soup with the clam is an extra burst of sea down your throat. The portion is small but it’s more than enough to truly enjoy and savor a delicious bowl of laksa😊💕 on a side note: I heard that the real owner uncle is not manning this stall anymore, open another somewhere nearby.. if anyone knows where is it do tell me haha! Meanwhile this is still really delicious and one of the best laksa in town🍜✨ #burrple #burpplesg #foodgramsg #instafoodsg #foodsg #sgfood #sgeats #eatsg #hawkereats #hawkersg #sghawkers #singaporefood #foodinsing #singaporeeats #cheapeatsg #cheapfoodsg #wheretoeatsg #whattoeatsg #instafood_sg
