Closed Permanently
๐๐๐ The bao is so soft & fluffy while the bbq pork was oozing with flavours & sweetness without too much fatty meat. Pretty generous fillings too ๐
Can't help but da bao additional back ๐๐๐ Broke my heart to read that they will be closing soon... Will miss this!!
We lived closed by and my parents would eat here diligently every Saturday morning (alternating with that defunct Chinatown Uncle dim sum place along Smith Street). I loved it, thin skins, meaty fillings and a savoury taste that was made better with the house made chilli. I was brought up by a Cantonese nanny so what she couldn't make in my flat, I supplemented with Hua Nam. When I was in primary school, I used to eat here diligently after Saturday ECA as I had to walk out from Sin Ming to take the bus. Over the years, I have brought many people here regardless of how unglamorous it was; I am sad to see it go. I am just glad that I had 1 last chance to whack my first ever dim sum dish... ๐ nostalgia much. ๐ข
This store has been around since the 50s & exudes the old school charm with signages, it's outlook & simple comfort food items such as dim sum.
Not necessarily the best available around, but it's an affordable pick me up whenever the cravings come by.
Quick go grab a bite before they officially close!
The old school Cantonese restaurant would be closing at the end of the month. No wonder it was packed during weekday lunch.
Felt the egg tart could have been better if baked slightly longer. Crumbly with smooth silky filling.
Uncle was a tab too busy to give a breakdown but was charged total S$24.40 for all including the iced tea.
Was lucky to grab the last 2 pieces of char siew buns which was so sweet and fluffy.
The hor fun was submerge with savoury gravy that wasn't too salty nor bland. Kway teow texture was slightly chewy. Served with slices of tender pork, sotong and vegetables , really satisfying!
An old school eatery that passed down for 3 generations. Sad news as the owner is retiring by the end of this month. Hokkien flat noodles coated with the thick dark sauce and I was already so full yet felt like eating more. This was how tasty it was.
Probably the last few posts from this place before it closes....
There's duck porridge, ้ฉฌ่น็ณ๏ผah char (complimentary), Hong Kong noodles, assorted dim sum ($2 per serving) - siew mai, har gao, chee cheong fun, lor mai gai. Total damage: $25.80 including drinks. #tingzieeats #burpple
Different from the typical Chee Cheong Fun fillings of char siew or prawns, the owners have decided to use minced pork instead. It was a unique pairing, and the sauce went well with the rice rolls.ย

VIBES: Authentic old school goodness
PARKING: Gotta make some rounds and hope to score a lot at the landed residential area behind.
WILL WE RETURN? Yep. They don't scrimp on the ingredients. And they've got some pretty interesting dim sum.
SPECIAL โค๏ธ FOR: The duck porridge
One of the last remaining old school coffee shop setting. Hwa Nam serves seriously good porridge if you're a fan of Cantonese styled "jhok" the century egg with shredded pork jhok sells out by 10am sometimes. But their chicken jhok is as good! Not high end. Just local comfort to warm the tummy.
It's so difficult to find handmade glutinous rice with chicken("Lor Mai Gai" in Cantonese) nowadays that I felt compelled to stop and try this when I saw it. Initially slightly disappointed at its diminutive portion, I quickly changed my mind, for what it lacks in size it makes up for in flavour. The glutinous rice is gloriously sticky, slightly sweet and firm to the bite, whilst the chicken is tender but has none of the spongy texture sometimes found in mass produced versions. Massively huge for dim sum, the dumplings were 99% meat. All killer, no filler. Dip everything in that tangy, mildly spicy chilli sauce for added kick. Oh and everything is freshly re-steamed to order.
This old style coffeeshop serving traditional cantonese dishes and dim sum is a big draw along Upper Thomson Road! Very often we focused a lot on the dim sum and forgot that they do very nice cantonese Tze char as well! Try their KL hokkien noodle... It's delicious!
Porridge was of watery consistency yet hearty! The glutinous rice/ dim sum for the matter of fact will not compare to your atas dim sum place but it will do for a quick fix! Zi char and roast meat here ie anchovy fried rice, fish hor fun is what my family & I return for when we just want a simple fuss free meal
I like my Hokkien mee like I dig my fried carrot cake. The black ones in KL are better though.
Probably one of the oldest kopi shop/restaurant with classic dim sum dishes. The moonlight dry kway teow is nice.
Old-school eatery right on Upper Thomson. The people, and vibe and ambience can't get any 70s that this. The fish porridge which is a must have for all tables around is bursting with flavor and texture, loaded with cabbage and ginger. This brings back a lot of memories. Their HK dimsum wouldn't be the best in Singapore. But definitely, one of the most homely.
