More Reviews of good food at Ootoya Japanese Restaurant (Orchard Central)

They are having a lunch promo for 2 now, and we were well satisfied by the servings size and quality. (Pic does not show all the food we had) Grilled fish was juicy and fresh sweetness. Every other dish had us sold.

Definitely a deluxe bento set for a person, which comes with lots of items such as the charcoal grilled saba, grilled chicken, tempura and unagi. The set also comes with some side dishes.

I ordered it through their delivery, so it was already cold by the time it reach my house. So I would recommend to reheat it before enjoy.

Thankfully all the great taste still preserving there after reheating.

Delicious katsu toji, portion is large enough for sharing, ample eggs as well.

Fried cod fish with a variety of greens and root vegetables stir fried with a sweet vinegary sauce. Miso soup and mixed grain rice were great and unlike common bento sets.

Oyako don ($17++) , Katsutoji ($18++) and Seiro Soba ($10.50++)

I visited the Orchard Central outlet on the 8th Floor. It has a rather huge dining area that is both traditional and modern in design. The interior decor stands out for me and makes me feel at home.

It’s my 2nd time at ootoya & it didn’t disappointment. The pork was juicy & matches the sauce perfectly!

Set comes with miso soup, rice & chawanmushi. Chawanmushi was very tiny, but was smooth & flavorful.

Paired this dish with the cold milk tea which complements it very well. Milk tea was smooth & had a good balance of milk & tea. Sugar syrup can be added in at our own discrete.

Overall a very enjoyable meal.

I’ve tried their pork kouji once before and had great memories of the taste. This time I tried their steak as well in a set that comprises them both. And honestly, I was surprised that it wasn’t as good as before. Everything was still delicious just not as I’ve remembered. The pork used to have a really nice slight char on them and more sauce.

Set comes with miso soup, refillable rice and chawanmushi.

The chawanmushi although very very small, was amazingly soft and smooth. Absolutely delightful!

I am an avid fan of ootoya and every time I go, I would order Neba Neba which is a combination of all things gooey (natto, okra, grated yam) on top of their homemade tofu.

I can’t get this anywhere else and it always leaves me dreaming for more after I leave.

After years of having this dish, it’s still my favourite dish from the restaurant.

Comprising of a base of Green tea pudding, castella sponge cake and green tea jelly, along with a middle layer of whipped cream, the parfait is topped with a scoop of green tea ice cream, served alongside with red bean and warabi mochi. Almost all the elements here would be perfect for the green tea lovers out there, a tea-riffic combo that makes one go green with envy! 💚As a hardcore matchaholic, the characteristic earthy, umami flavour of matcha here was distinct albeit a tad subtle and mild for my liking. My favourite component in this parfait here has got to be the green tea pudding that’s smooth, soft and silk-like! 💕✨ The big cubes of warabi mochi here were coated with kinako powder that came with fragrant roasted notes, chewy albeit a tad firm, would have been great if it’s softer and more melty in texture. Never a fan of red beans hence I omitted the ones here and enjoyed the matcha elements in silo. The Matcha ice cream was decent, smooth and creamy with a subtle earthy note. The castella cake chunks were soft, fluffy though the flavour seems a tad bizzare with a tangy note that somehow reminds me of a rum-soaked ladyfinger biscuit that’s typically found in tiramisu. Nevertheless, given the pocket-friendly pricetag, this is still an enjoyable sweet ending to indulge in and after a meal here! .

Was hankering for their fresh fish from the Tsukiji Fish Market menu they were running the other time (which we're still dreaming about till this very day) but was slightly disappointed it wasn't there anymore.
Still, I was determined to have a go at their fish again, and finally settled on this from their new 'Healthy' menu.
Not too sure if 'Healthy' would be the right word to describe it because the fish was encased and deep fried in a extremely crispy batter, but I did enjoy it. Though, I felt that it wasn't the best way to showcase the freshness of their fish, but it was still pleasant... almost like the Japanese version of our local Fish Soup. I was expecting the soup to be the regular liquidy kind, but it came more gelatinous, much like the Shark Fin soup that they serve in Chinese restaurants. On hindsight, I much preferred this rendition because it made the wonderfully crispy fish less soggy, and I could enjoy it properly. They were indeed generous with the vegetables in the soup, and the tofu was reallyyy smooth and tasty. Only slight gripe was that their 5-grain rice felt more like white rice with occasional appearances of coloured grains, but overall, still a wonderfully satisfying meal which further proves the restaurant's quality and consistency.

One thing that ootoya can be counted upon is really fresh fish on their bara chirashi that satisfies the palate every time 🙃

If you like your fish to come off the bone easily in chunky flakes, the Hokke here is a must-order. To help refresh the palate as you feast on this grilled fish, a bowl of finely-grated Japanese radish and a small side dish of sweetish seaweed are served together with it.
I recommend getting this as a set meal because for $5++ more, you are given a bowl of rice, miso soup, pickles, appetiser and chawanmushi.
What I find most impressive though is how Ootoya has managed to maintain their standard all this time.
We had stepped in to the Orchard Central outlet for an early dinner recently, after not having eaten there in years, and experienced service and food quality that's exactly like when the restaurant first opened in Singapore. Amazing.
Oh, and apart from us, every customer in there was Japanese. Which says a lot about its authenticity, don't you agree? 😊

As much as I like the Barachirashi from Teppei, it's refreshing to have a very much lighter seasoned version of the popular raw fish over rice once in a while. Yes, the cubes of sashimi weren't as large as Teppei's and the ikura was a touch less firm than what I'd prefer but overall, this was pretty decent.
You can also order it as a set meal which gets you a bowl of miso soup and a petite but very good chawanmushi.

The Hokke Set was plastered in huge print on their menu, so we thought it would be one of their specialties! It was good indeed. The fish meat was so tender and well-marinated, each bite was oozing with juiciness. Love how they provided sides, like beans and spinach and pickled vegetables, to whet your appetite.

Another point worth mentioning is their Chawanmushi, which came in a very small portion but was honestly one of the best I've eaten (I do eat at lots of Japanese restaurants, so that's saying something). It's extremely smooth and has this sweetness which was very tasty!

Located at Level 8 of Orchard Central, this restaurant is surpringly not very crowded. The staff are really nice too!
