More Reviews of good food at Song Kee Fish Ball Noodle (Yio Chu Kang)

This time, almost nothing was deserving of their reputation, probably only the wet and intense lard. The fish dumpling was complex and the fish roll decent, but everything else was mediocre. The noodles were also overly drenched in chilli.

Song Kee Fishball Noodle's signature dish is a crowd-pleaser!
Springy fishballs, fishcake, springy noodles, and a savoury clear broth that warms the heart.
With a serving of fried pork lard.
Well-loved by regulars for a reason - a must-try item!

Once you’ve mastered a dish, you don’t really need to sell anything else. This goes for Song Kee where every customer can be seen devouring a bowl of fishball noodle. Highlight is definitely the variety of fish ingredients, my fav being the fish dumpling!

The noodles quite firm to bite. I find the big fish cake abit salty. Though i like that the fishballs are hand made, i find it abit tough. The fishballs not bouncy. The fish dumpling texture is slimy because they use sweet potato flour. The fillings taste like minced meat with pepper, not fish. But the dumplings are indeed big. I probably wont come down just for this.

Best fish ball noodles in SG period. Try it and let me know if there is a better place!

Best herkiao I’ve had, hands down!! The fish paste skin is hand-rolled, and is made up of fish meat and tapioca flour. It’s then filled with a well-seasoned meat filling, which was fragrant and not too salty. The skin has a nice bite to it, it’s thin but somehow bouncy. The herkiao was very tasty - the insides have slippery, kinda goopy part, which was such a textural delight. So good in terms of both texture and flavour.

The handmade fishballs, taupok, and fish roll were pretty decent, not the nicest I’ve had (shoutout to hup kee’s fishballs and taupok which r the best) but still better than average; handmade definitely trumps factory made ones.

The noodles were reasonably nice too - springy, not too hard, no alkaline taste. The sauce was alright, I asked for no chilli so they used tomato sauce. I added more vinegar after, as I prefer a punchier bowl of noodles.

Definitely will return!

My expectations were low to be honest, too many times, I read good reviews and often left dissatisfied.

To my surprise, this was an excellent bowl of fishball noodles, the chilli was great, fishball also good, but the fish dumplings were damn wow.

I will definitely return again and again.

The shop opens at 11.30am, at 11.30am, already starting to get crowded. Take note that this place quite out of the way, so people really made the effort to come here to eat.

The ingredients are damn huge, so don't need order too much, a medium bowl was already quite filling for me.

Noodles were quite average but fish balls were quite nice. However I would go for the $5 one the next time instead cos it was quite filling!

I have read many good reviews of the famous fish dumplings from Song Kee Fishball Noodle and I finally got to try it today! We ordered the dry Fishball Noodle ($7 for medium) and Mixed Soup ($8) and here’s a word of advice: you really don’t need to upsize the noodles as the size of the fishballs is HUGE and they can be quite filling😅

Noodle-wise, the texture is not bad and it is tossed in a fragrant chilli sauce that is packed with dried shrimps. The fishballs, meatballs, fish cakes and fish dumplings are fresh and bouncy, and they go well with the chilli sauce. The fish dumpling is quite unlike the other fish dumplings I have tried - the skin is chewier and the minced meat filling is well seasoned. I also like the addition of taupok stuffed with fish paste as it soaks up the delicious sauce and offers a different texture from the fishballs, fish cake etc.

Personally, I wish the fishballs are a little smaller so that it doesn’t get jelak towards the end of the meal. Nonetheless, this is still a pretty decent bowl of fishball noodles!

The fish dumplings are nicer than average. The fish balls are also quite bouncy. It's nicer than the average noodles. Do give it a try if you happen to be around this area.

To my surprise I saw a plate of piping hot char kway teow being delivered to the table beside me at Song Kee, which as far as I know only had fishball noodles in all their glorious variations on the menu. It was only after I had finished my meal that I realised they had taken over the vacancy next door and were in the midst of transforming it into what looked like an air-conditioned “tze char” restaurant.

Curious, I ordered a plate to try even though I had already eaten. It is a decent rendition, with a nice level of smokiness and pork slices in place of fishcake, but could definitely do with stronger seasoning and a dash more lard, but that’s probably due to the chef being new and the kitchen still working out its kinks. Will definitely be back to try again when the restaurant proper officially opens.

Taste: 3/5

Thankfully, Mr and Mrs Mohgan were sold out that morning during the nth time I visited, so that drove us to this fishball noodles place nearby. And it was so good.
🔸
It's all about the her keow (fish dumplings) kiapped by the chopsticks pictured here. I went with no expectations, but my eyes lit up as I was surprised by how flavourful those fillings within were. It's pork fillings definitely, but that marinate for the fillings sets this apart from other her keow, although they are all wrapped in a thin and smooth fish skin. The fishballs and other ingredients here are quite good too, being soft and bouncy.
🔸
I've heard they were better when they were at Serangoon, which I've never visited even though it was nearer then, cos of the long queues. But @mininomster said it could be because of the old school and dirty feel of that coffeeshop, while the new outlet felt too clean.

Very straightforward menu - dry or soup noodles. Opted for dry mee tai bak, Al dente but wished it had more flavour. The fishballs were good but definitely the star of the show is the fish dumplings. Very flavourful and good meat to skin ratio. Yums!

had the soup mee tai bak and the dry mee kia. Generous amount of ingredients with three fishballs, one dumpling and one taupok for just $4. Dumpling was nice! Friendly staff is a bonus!

I got the meekia not spicy with no taupok. I think it’s great but mainly cos they are really generous with their sauce.

I would go for their chilli next time. It really is tastier! Maybe less spicy. Fish dumpling is good. Fishballs can be a lot better.

Good size bowls of mee pok, mee kia n 老鼠粉 served with chewy fishballs, extra large meatball n bigger then usual yummilious fish dumplings.
$6 or $8 per bowl

Most of the fish dumplings (her giao) I had are either tad too dry or small to my liking which contributed to my disappointment. I guess my disappointment had officially ceased ever since I had Song Kee fishball Noodles’ her giao😬 The her giao from them are plump with savoury filling and most importantly the texture is super slimy which attributes to the uniqueness of the dumpling😋

Considered one of the best, if not the best, fishball noodle in Singapore, raved by many, Song Kee serves super tasty Fishball Noodle. There are options for $4, $6, $8, greedy me of course ordered for the $8. I am glad the noodle portion is normal and not too big. Make sure you ask for the chili sauce with the noodle which makes a difference as the shrimp paste umami-ness game is strong. The $8 portion comes with three types of fishballs, fried tofu with fishball filing, her kiao (fish dumpling with minced meat filling - Chinese ravioli!). The her kiao was the star of the dish, soft and goey filing. So good, i even then bought the uncooked ones (80 cents per pc, min. 10 pcs) to bring home. Song Kee, I vow to return for more.

Wish I could change all the ingredients to just the fish dumplings and stuffed taupok! The fishballs were nice and bouncy, but I wasn’t too fond of the meatball. If you like it more vinegar-y, there is a bottle of black vinegar on every table, so splash away!
