Eyeing their homecured pancetta for the longest time, I finally got the chance to head down to Ah Bong’s at their Tan Quee Lan branch for a quick weekday lunch.

Simple and comforting, the two words that always pop up in my mind during my meals at Ah Bong’s and the best adjectives to sum up the place; the Traditional Carbonara ($18/ lunch set) I had was just that and more. The familiar flavours of the creamy sauce base was enhanced with the earthy sauteed mushrooms and savoury pancetta. A great bite with a mouth-watering ratio of fat and meaty parts, I dare say that the chunky pancetta is better than bacon imho! And as always the texture of the pasta is on point. Tossed sufficiently, the al dente linguine is coated with all the luscious goodness that was surprisingly well balanced as it was not too heavy that it would overpower the other components but had all the wonderful flavours you need. Their brownie was yummy too~

A recommendation from burppler tastemaker is this well fried Char kway teow ! So blessed to be able to try this dish under the tasty tastemaker tour held yesterday without having to queue, especially when he's handling the stall alone!
Savoury CKT with lots of ingredients like fishcakes, prawns, cockles, Chinese saussage and eggs!
Although the flavours of the CKT were quite mild compared to other stalls I tried, you could really taste the freshness of the juicy cockles and the spicy paste that gives an oomph.

I just found my current favourite swiss rolls.
They are really delicious. The sponge is soft, cream is so smooth & light, and best of all, they are not overly sweet.
🔸
My personal favourite would be this Espresso flavour & the Earl Grey flavour. Love the orange segments inside the earl grey flavour. 😍😍😍
I actually finished both swiss rolls at one go without sharing them. 😌

My first time eating fried Laksa. This was a like combination of hokkien Mee with laksa broth. Very addictive to eat. Spicy and filled with prawn-y flavor. .

Because of the heavy laksa broth, it made it very difficult to finish one plate alone.

A quieter outlet of the Mellben Group at Opal Crescent, a good choice if you are craving for some crab bee hoon soup at the last minute without wanting to queue! We had both the bee hoon soup and golden sands crab but I would recommend having the crab bee hoon when you're here as its their specialty! The soup is definitely one of the richest and creamiest that I've had. Also, I noticed that the crab in the soup is much sweeter than the golden sands one — they probably used the better crabs for the bee hoon to give more flavor to the soup!

It consists of a big chicken drumstick and a piece of potato fritter. While queueing, the person in front of me just randomly told me that this is the best Mee Soto in Singapore; and guess what? Look like he's right afterall.

Kueh Pie Tee? Kong Bak Pau? Tauhu Goreng? Assam Laksa? Ngoh Hiang? Among these, mine was Kueh Pie Tee ☺️

They are popular for their Claypot Crayfish Laksa but this is very good too! One of those you wanna drink up all the soup😋

Fried Hokkien Mee ($10)

I have been reminiscing about this heavenly plate of goodness since I was introduced to it on Friday night. Prices start from $4 but we decided to order 2 giant plates to share instead.

I love my hokkien mee swimming in unami gravy and this was spot on! Combined with the crispy pork lard and ikan bilis (which is not found in most hokkien mee) this gave that additional bite and flavour to the already shiok noodles. And if all that has not convinced anyone, the prawns🍤 here are HUGE (and deshelled😂), the largest I have personally seen used for hokkien mee. Juicy and fresh without bring overcooked, there were so many prawns that we were offering the last one to each other!

For pork lard lovers, feel free to request for additional portions!

Lazy weekends call for bowls of mee pok and kway teow mee ($4/$5/$6) - simple, filling and comforting. I personally loooove the minced pork that go so well with the springy noodles. You can also ask for more or less chilli, ketchup or lard! Be prepared to wait.

I'm usually not a fan of spicy soups, but this is definitely worth trying! The broth is so flavourful and intense, EPIC 😍 Love at first slurp. There isn't a lot of seats (two tables of four, one long table of eight and bar seats) so best to come in small groups or make reservations prior. Also, come for the lunch sets where you can get the pho bowls (this included) and ONE spring roll for $12. #burpplecheapNgood
