I'll believe if this is their signature item. Unique and strong. I love orh nee.
[MACPHERSON, SINGAPORE] Finally tried Garden Pastry's extremely popular waffles and is it worth the hype?? Unfortunately, I don't think so 🤣
Their waffle was firstly a whooping 55 minutes wait, which honestly was quite shocking for a neighbourhood bakery. After the long wait, the waffles indeed tasted decent but definitely not worth the long wait 🥲 The default texture for the waffles was soft, not crispy, but chewy with a kueh like texture. It definitely had a fragrant Pandan flavour which complemented well with their peanut butter. They did give quite a generous slap of it too!
I wouldn't recommend going all the way for this waffle, but if there isn't a queue and you happen to be there, then sure it can be one of your snack options. Sad I couldn't try their taro swiss roll that day as well!
($2.60) I decided to explore deeper into paya lebar area (geylang east ctrl) for waffles with my sister. I noticed a lot of bakery (around 3 to 4 shops) selling waffles also along the way from bus stop at geylang east ctrl to aljunied ave 2) but then I preferred OG bakery over newly opened bakery lol at there. So it took us around 15 to 30 mins to walk in for waffles lol. You need to pay for waffles at cashier before waiting waffles for at least 45 mins to 1 hr to be ready. The taste for waffles was quite savoury tbh but the filling was just nice (not that little or too much) and also a bit sticky bc of caramel :")
($4.20) hmmm I decided to get cake roll for chocolate since there's a variety of cake roll and ring that they selling for. But the cake taste like in between bitter & sweet and need to pair with black tea.
($4.20) it's best selling flavour for cake on the fridge. hmmm the cream changed from purple to white colour and also don't have deco on top of the cake? as I saw some of food website post the cake lol. even their yam filling inside the cake got less :") but then yam filling is thick and also smooth texture. But the cake taste quite mild sweet and also I kinda disappointed by the cake deco :")
Taro Bun from Garden Pastry & Cake 嘉頓!
Trying another taro item this time. Instead of the usual yam bun, this has a crispy swirl around the top (abit like the taro mooncake kind, but less crispy)
Orh Nee paste given for bread was also quite substantial.
🍞 Strawberry Ring
📍Garden Pastry & Cake (@gardenpastry1977)
📌 Aljunied
💰 $3.20
You know its an old school cake when its coated in tiny peanut pieces. This Strawberry Ring comes with strawberry jam on top of a cake with buttercream and peanuts.
Its pretty expensive for its small size, but it tastes ultra nostalgic because of the strong buttercream and strawberry jam. Surprisingly not too sweet.
Pretty good, not sure if I'd get it again cuz of the price but a really really solid old school cake.

🍞 Yam Bun

📌 Aljunied
💰 $1.60
Its amazing how this bun manages to stand out from every other basic yam bun because of the flaky top. It looks like a teochew mooncake, so cute
The flaky bits are pretty crispy and really delightful to peel off and eat. The yam filling is very natural and nicely sweetened, one of the best yam buns imo.

🍞 Chicken Floss Yam Bun
📍Garden Pastry & Cake (@gardenpastry1977)
📌 Aljunied
💰 $1.80
3rd time trying a chicken floss yam bun (1st time from Swee heng, 2nd time from The Hainan Story Bakery) and this bun def takes the top spot.
The bun is filled hella generously with yam and chicken floss. The yam is really natural and not artificial at all, yet it has enough sweetness to make it not taste bland. The chicken floss is the cheap kind thats pretty soft and melty but ngl I dont mind it that much.
Wish there was more mayo to make it even more flavourful but suuuuper worth the price!

This cake comes with a THICCCC block of taro filling in the middle! The taro tastes like natural yam with a thick texture, definitely some high quality taro filling right there. The cake is really soft and a little dense, such a wonderful combo. The cream on top isn't a lot such that it doesn't overwhelm the lovely taro block.
A really solid cake, so glad that I decided to carry it home because this is definitely worth the trip down to Aljunied!

Still my favourite mooncake after so many years.
I don’t like traditional or snow skin.
The only thing I look forward to every Mid-Autumn Festival is their Mini Crispy Skin Pure Yam Mooncake. And this year, I’m lucky to get a box for myself before they closed order last Tue/Wed.
Not the conventional kind of mooncake that we usually have, but it's definitely close to my heart. My aunt would buy this every year from Harbour City Restaurant, that has already closed, since I was a child. A butter pastry baked till golden brown, this version from Garden Pastry includes relatively big pieces of walnuts encompassing thick lotus paste filling. The combination of a salted egg yolk reduces the plain sweetness from the lotus paste, but the downside is a dry yolk that breaks into a mess. Thankfully the pastry crust is soft and has a light buttery aroma. There's a cheese version too. Though my aunt is no longer with us, memories stay forever. Wishing everyone 中秋節快樂!

Once in a while, I like to take a walk around old neighbourhoods to look out for bakeries. Not those usual ones, but those that still sell old-school cakes with cream and "jelly" icing on top.
No doubt these cakes are ordinary and are not as delectable as those that you can find in shopping malls. Still, for the fact that these are like my first impression of cakes, I find it hard to resist buying them. These cakes make good pairing with a cup of milk tea or a packet of Dutch Lady.
Selling at S$3.20 for a box of three slices of cake, what I got was not just a box of cakes, but also brought me back to memory lane to reminisce my childhood.
This year, Garden Pastry is offering the most unique mooncakes like their Crispy Skin Mooncakes and the Baked Pastry Skin Mooncakes Series!
I highly recommend you to try their Crispy Skin Yam Mooncake ($14/with single yolk, $12.50/without). The pastry was so flaky and the yam reminded me of orh nee - a really interesting twist to our traditional mooncakes ☺️
