The perfect spot to get supper late night around Paya Lebar. A place where you can find all Asian and Western foods when you crave it at night.
I went for their mee goreng with seafood. Tasty fried noodles with the ingredients.
[Muslim Owned] I’m a simple person. I see shakshouka, I order shakshouka! 🤫
No but seriously, this is one of those dishes that is good to have at any part of the day. Alto Café’s Shakshouka doesn’t stray far off from what makes it already great, but it is evidently tailored for people who love spicy food because when I say I was soaked in beads of perspiration after this… 🤣
It is flavourful, savoury, and tart enough to make your lips pucker. And it’s garnished with some cilantro and feta cheese. Of course, not forgetting the staple onsen/poached egg that is nestled in the centre of the dish. This was all in all a great dish.
You get three pieces of toasted sourdough, which you can dip with the stew. Otherwise, they make for great balms from the spiciness. It dials down the heat by quite a bit…at least speaking from a purely personal experience! 😅 (7.5/10)
P.S. This outlet of Alto Café closes at 5pm daily!
[Muslim Owned] Hot Chocolate is one of those drinks that I feel many would underestimate in how brilliant it can get.
And honestly, you can’t really blame them cause it’s not hard to imagine what goes into a cup of the non-caffeinated classic. Even the famed cup of French hot chocolate is nothing more than milk/cream and chocolate. In other words, the glass ceiling is pretty low.
However, when you venture beyond the conventional and waddle in the waters of experimentation, you can get some unexpected but darn amazing results.
That was the case with this Hot Mango Chocolate ($5) from Alto Café, a Muslim-friendly café nested in a condominium located in Bayshore. 🥭🍫 Every sip was a blend of velvety smooth hot chocolate and a punch of tropical-sweet mango flavour.
And the best bit happened at the last sip; this was the very first hot chocolate where that still tasted smooth. There was none of the grainy texture that traditionally comes with the final few sips of chocolate drinks. I personally never minded it, but I gotta say — I never knew how refreshing it was until I had this!
I still think about this, and it takes the title of the second best cup of hot chocolate that I’ve had. It’s bested only by the Hot Chilli Chocolate I had at a coffee shop in Edinburgh, Scotland during a vacation some years ago. 🤤 (9.5/10)
Alto Cafe probably does not need much of an introduction these days — being a cafe that is known to be situated within the compounds of the condominium named Bayshore Park, Alto Cafe had since opened yet another outlet that is also located within a condominium — its latest outpost is at Sims Urban Oasis; the cafe being situated at the side gate of the condominium along Aljunied Road which is just a stone’s throw away from the bus stop outside the condominium. Occupying just a single shop unit, the space features two levels — the main dine-in area being located on the first level, while an outdoor dining area meant for condominium residents only is situated at level two alongside the counter for orders that is located within the shop unit itself. The space is decked simply though features a lot of plants and rattan furnishings to achieve a Balinese-style look that is makes the cafe look close-to-nature. Alto Cafe’s menu here is largely similar to the one that they serve at Bayshore Park, and features items split into sections that include Signature Open Toast, All Day Brekkie, Pasta, Shakshouka & Salads, Waffles, Croissantwich & Smoothie Bowls and Kids & Ala-Carte. Beverages include specialty coffee brewed using beans roasted by Dutch Colony Coffee Co., teas, milkshakes and other special concoctions such as Mango Chocc, Choco Rose and Rose Latte, whilst they also do offer various danishes, croissants and muffins that are displayed in a shelf on the counter as well.
Going through the menu, we found ourselves being pretty interested in the Shakshouka, which features elements such as stewed tomatoes, capsicums, feta cheese, poached egg, Zaatar, and coriander — it also comes with two slices of sourdough toast on the side. It is noted that their variant doesn’t include any sausages or meat unlike those that are served at other cafes; this also makes their rendition vegan-friendly as well. Giving everything a good mix, we note that the poached egg here could be done a little better — the poached egg came served with the egg yolk being a little bit towards being more solid; otherwise the entire dish was bright and tangy from the stewed tomatoes, with bits of tomato and capsicum giving it a good bite and the poached egg and feta cheese providing some sort of richness. The sourdough toast used here is on-point, crusty on the exterior yet comes with a tension when one chews it apart — also had its own slight tanginess from the fermentation process that makes a sourdough what it is; a perfect pairing with the Shakshouka itself as one mops up the entire bowl with it.
Alto Cafe’s offerings may be simple, but there is something pretty comforting with the fare that they are serving up — the food, which is Muslim-friendly, does feel hearty and healthy, and does seem to have a lot of colour that makes it also pretty appealing to the eyes. We were, however, really impressed by their specially-concocted drinks here though — the Dirty Rose (which consists of double shots of espresso, rose syrup and milk) and the Mango Chocolate we had were equally memorable; the latter does sound like a weird combination but the sweetness of the tropical fruit went surprisingly well with the bittersweet chocolate — a showstopper worth mentioning on its own. While Alto Cafe’s Sim Urban Oasis does suffer from a being just a small space that fits 12 pax within its indoor public dine-in area on the ground floor, its newest outlet is also probably the most convenient for those who are deterred by having to go through the hassle of registering themselves at the security post just to patronise the cafe at their Bayshore Park location; probably just a small sacrifice for those cafe-hoppers who are eager to give Alto Cafe a try!
You must be wondering what kind of interesting combination of food this is, but you really can get such variety under one hood! This place sells everything from western to zi char to dim sum to Indian Muslim food and they are really not bad! The Ee Mee ($6) had a pretty scrumptious broth, with fresh seafood and al dente noodles (finally). The Cheese Fries ($6) were pretty addictive and they were generous with the sauce! The Salted Egg Custard Bun ($3.20) were sweet and the filling is flowy! The oyster omelette was a miss, you can skip that. A really convenient and affordable place for a meal!

Really liked those laid-back vibes at Geylang Drip City when I had visited them for the very first time — finally managed to drop by again and was pleasantly surprised with how they do carry slightly more items on their menu this time round; folks who wish to go for something savoury can now go for the “Lost in the Sauce” — essentially a grilled cheese sandwich served with tomato sauce, while there is also a Peaches and Cream Remix that comes with “frozen peachy cream” and “crunchy crumbles”.
The No Figgity is essentially a fig and candied orange cheesecake; whilst being a cheesecake, I found it particularly interesting how this rendition comes served more like a semifreddo — somewhat of a semi-frozen mousse form that made it especially appealing. The cheesecake itself is actually very light and smooth; rather mousse-like instead of the dense, New York Cheesecake-style cake that we were somewhat expecting it to be. Within that mousse comes nibs of figs and candied orange for some bite; the mousse is also tasted somewhat brighter with a wee bit of tang — the only thing that we thought could be better was the cookie crumble at the bottom. Whilst the base does provide the dessert with an interesting crunch, we found the texture to be a little too contrasting with the otherwise smooth cheesecake layer; just felt a little out of place and could be better if they opted for something softer. Really liked the dollop of cream that they have provided on the side however; it adds a slight sweetness with the same zippiness from the candied orange within the cheesecake itself — just provides for yet another dimension of flavours that cuts through that ever slight cheesiness going on with the cheesecake.
One thing I particularly enjoy about Geylang Drip City is the vibes — there is just this underground vibes going in there that pretty much makes up the character of their branding; the island counter where the espresso machine and filter coffee equipment are at in the middle of the space is particularly charming, and takes the centre stage of their operations. Despite that all of the strong indie vibes, one can easily see their passion for the craft and readiness to share more about the coffee that they serve. No doubt the food does seem to suggest that the menu caters to those whom are feeling peckish, but Geylang Drip City is the place to hit for the serious coffee lover who appreciates the details of what goes behind a great cuppa.
