More Reviews of good food at Babas Peranakan (Chinatown Complex)

Although this is my first photo sharing from this stall, I actually have been patronising this stall for many years; since I started working in Chinatown.

I love their curry with chili paste a lot which really enhance the overall taste. That’s why I have been returning for back whenever I have the craving for it.

Sadly the announcement came, even as I hope it wasn’t the true. But the owner has decided to call it a day to retire, after serving their signature peranakan caifan for so many years here.

Closing by end of this year, I guess they worked very hard to maintain the standard of the taste. They also aged a lot since my first visit here, definitely deserve some good rest.

So you only have a few weeks left to enjoy this. Always a long queue here, with the items snapped out pretty fast. I definitely recommend you to grab their fried chicken, curry chicken, hae zou and egg.

This post would mark as a memory for me of this stall when they close permanently soon after.

Chicken was so tender n meaty. Very hearty n tasty meal at Babas. Very popular.

Back again! I really liked the omelette - it was still hot when served, and very fluffy and moist, with a nice charred exterior. The chap chye was decent - soft cabbages with dong fen and tau kee, but I think the sayur lemak (which I ordered previously) was better. The fish cake was good as well, bouncy and well-seasoned, there’s so bits of prawn in there too! I panicked and pointed to what looked like firm tofu, but it was actually firm tofu with tempeh. Tempeh is not my thing, and if I had to eat it I would have it fried. This was alright, but the tofu was tasty. The dish also came with some green beans and onions! Will be back for the prawn fritters, which were unfortunately sold out / not avail when I went today!

It’s a good caifan stall! The fried chicken was decently moist, and it was huge. The uncle cut it with scissors so it’s easier to eat. Enjoyed the soft stewy cabbages in the sayur lemak (there was some taupok in it too), and the tender potato. The curry is rather lemak but didn’t feel too heavy - it’s not too spicy, just a nice comfortable heat. Go before 12 to avoid long queues!

Finally caught this stall open. I must admit it's kinda underwhelming, since it's just caifan. Curry chicken, cabbage and beancurd skin dumplings. The most Peranakan element was the curry, which was very coconutty and delicious. Fyi the meat was an entire leg - unfortunately it wasn't cooked well. Dumplings were surprisingly good.

They sell a lot of curry, chicken curry to be exact. People before me (& after me) order chicken curry as a standard. Curry packs a spicy punch, & smells fragrant with hints of kafir lime leaves. I usually complete my order with the fried chicken, long beans, egg omelette & of course the sambal balacan chili! Shiok!

All that for $4.50

I saw this on toggle’s cheap cheap vs atas and at once was intrigued by how peranakan food can exist in the Hawker space.

I mean.. ALL THAT WORK + the unending list of ingredients involved and 🙌🏻🙌🏻 hands in the air, cos it all SHONE THROUGH.

I felt so humbled for slighting this sloppy looking plate for the brief second. The veggie curry really was LEMAK. It was a tad too salty on its own but that stubborn coconut and mix of spice just won’t leave your mouth without assaulting your tastebuds. The onions/gingers in the veggie rempah were like the greatest showman.

Pungently good and it wasn’t like they used the same rempah in every dish. Cos the chicken curry tasted different than the veggie curry. The chicken curry was a lot more dilute but that piece of chicken leg as you can see is falling apart soft.

Don’t leave without having the omelette! Super thick, oily, fluffy, fragrant ❤️

The Peranakan dishes at this cai fan stall makes Nonya food affordable, and our Burpple Tastemakers are loving both the prices as well as the variety. Burpple Tastemaker Sheryl Lyx topped her plate of rice with fried chicken, chap chye (Nonya stewed veggies) and stir-fried long beans, all for $4! Soft and sweet, the chap chye is proof of its long stewing hours, while the chicken is crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, like a good fried chicken should be. What really sets it apart though is the turmeric-laced marinade, which adds a whole level of flavour and complexity to the meat. Ask for a heaping spoonful of the amazing sambal belachan on the side.
Avg price: $5

$4 for this HUGE plate of food. That’s insane. On the plate we had a fried chicken, chap chye and long beans. Every dish was generous and well cooked, especially the chap chye which was so soft and sweet. It must have been stewed for hours! We also loved the fried chicken which was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Do not forget about the SUPER TOKGONG CHILLI that complements every dish so well. #BurppleChinatown

I was introduced by my friend @aikbengchia to "Babas Peranakan" (#02-225), a stall at Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre that specialises in Peranakan "chap chye png". He told me he ate here nearly every day after his friend enlightened him of their existence last August. It's all the proof I needed of how good their food must be. And true enough, I had a most satisfying lunch for a very affordable $6.
As you can tell from my photo, it was a no holds barred event when it came to me ordering. Faced with the numerous mouthwatering dishes, I knew I had to go big or go home.
Everything was tasty but the two standouts in my overloaded plate were the omelette (it was just like how my grandma use to cook hers - with sliced big onions and chilies) and the crispy fried chicken (the use of "kunyit" in the marinade made it very aromatic). They prepare the latter in small batches and this popular item moves very quickly. So at times, you may need to wait for a couple of minutes while they are being fried.
The curry gravy splashed on my rice was rich and fragrant, so do ask for more of it if you like your carbs to be loaded with "lemak-ness". Don't miss out on their "sambal belachan" either if you can handle spiciness as it seems to pair well with everything else.
(Note: They close on Wednesdays).

My favourite #Peranakan Fried Chicken! After the meh Peranakan Food I had last week, this was worth braving the insane traffic in Chinatown for. #love

The variety of dishes here at Babas Peranakan is quite limited compared to a regular chap chye png stall but that is only because one person is cooking in this space constrained kitchen.
.
However, you can be assured of the consistency and quality of the food delivered.
.
I ordered a plate of rice and picked chicken curry, bitter gourd yong tau fu and chap chye. I also asked for curry sauce to be splashed over the rice.

Using peranakan spices and cooking methods, it transforms the generic mixed vegetables rice into something special. The long queue during lunchtime is a good testament to its popularity and this usually boils down to two reasons, either it’s damn cheap or the taste is something that you will revisit again. In current times, it’s tough to find a place that’s able to satisfy both but Babas Peranakan manages to achieve them.

As it was approaching my turn to order, I noticed that the people in front of me were all patiently waiting for one item to be ready and that’s the deep fried chicken. Without hesitation, it was a no brainer as I excitedly pointed to the freshly fried chicken, nyonya chap chye and long beans, before requesting for my rice to be drenched in curry sauce. Eating this plate is like stepping into the chef’s kitchen where you get the luxury of sampling home cooked food. The total bill came up to $4.50 and I left a happy and satisfied customer.
