If you are into moreish comforting flavours, banana leaf rice is right up your alley as you will be piled with mountains of rice, curry sauces and condiments to go alongside a plethora of dishes such as mutton rendang, ayam kicap manis, fried fish and squid. One surprising condiment is the crispy bitter gourd, a vegetable that I usually avoid due to the bitter taste but the ones here were fried to an absolute crisp with no bitterness. Prepare for the impending food coma after this meal.

Weird to not have banana leaf rice on a banana leaf but this is not too bad. Sedap, with lots of choices for the fried dishes. Huge portion so let the server know if you want a smaller serving.

No stranger to the Indian food scene is this popular vegetarian spot known for their wholesome and value-for-money thali sets. Perfect for lunch is the Ganga G-Light (from RM8) featuring choices of brown rice or chapati, served alongside two vegetable dishes of the day, dhal, papadom and a salad. Early-risers should come for breakfast and break into the crispy Rawa Thosai (RM3.20) which Burppler R D says is served with "mindblowingly delicious" curries and chutneys.

Bala’s famous beetroot thosai deserves all its fame. While it doesn’t have a super distinct taste of beetroot, some of its earthiness comes through if you eat the thosai on its own. Of course better paired with the carrot and coconut chutney.

It’s so weird how I only started to try appam this year. It made me wonder, how did I survive 25 years without tasting this magical thing? They have a famous stall in Bangsar called Chelo but up til this day, I have to try it. My go-to appam place has always been Bala’s, for obvious reasons. It’s a sufficient dessert for me every time I come here for a visit, and I hate sharing this food especially. I give people the stare whenever they try to steal my appam because it’s so good 😂 just the right amount of crispy and fat all in one. Couldn’t get any better than this.

For spice, rice and everything nice, plan your next makan gathering at this spacious resto for incredible Indian vegetarian grub. Your order must include the Tandoori Broccoli (RM20). Cooked in the tandoor oven, broccoli pieces are cooked to a meaty texture that is tender yet holds a bite, and bears a lovely smoky aroma. Be sure to dunk it in the fresh mint sauce for more oomph! Pairs this with the Cheese Naan (RM10). For the adventurous, order Something (RM18) from the menu – the kitchen decides what they want to serve you!

Better than your average banana leaf! Curry was amazing, fried chicken was too dry though.

An ultimate Malaysian eating experience involves banana leaf rice – a South Indian method of serving rice, curry and assorted vegetables on a banana leaf. Once you get in line, order the Vegetable Meal Set (RM9.50) that features fluffy rice served alongside three vegetables including the popular bitter gourd fritters – ask for more! Choose from fish, chicken and dhal curries to douse your rice in for the finishing touch. To amp up your meal, we suggest adding proteins like the Fried Chicken (RM7) and Fried Sotong (RM10) that's great for sharing. P.S. The best way to dig in is by using your hands! Another quintessential Malaysian dish to try is the Maggi Goreng (RM6), a fried instant noodle dish with spices and vegetables.

They didn’t tell me the portion would be enough to feed 2 full grown adults (perhaps it’s just me)
Had to loosen my pants a little after the amazing meal, but I don’t regret a single bit.
