Chopsuey is a good place to bring your overseas friends to because they have done a v good job in fusion across Asian cuisines. Favourite was the 9pc dim sum basket $26++ and another job well done for the mix of spices in food and sauces. Can give the prawn toasties a miss ($19++ for 4 and +4.50 for extra piece). The fish tofu lasagna $32++ was interesting. And of course don’t forget to order their signature sticky date pudding for dessert since it’s under PS cafe. Good dining experience and ambience. I'm not sure if they regularly change their menu but it was v different from when I first came 2 years back. Nonetheless highly recommend 👍

Nestled in a quieter area of Dempsey Hill, Jiu Zhuang is a beautiful hidden restaurant and bar that is a worth a try. The ambience of Jiu Zhuang perfectly matches up to its name, with the whole restaurant appearing to be a premium drinking house, and decked in heritage, Chinese style decor which aimed to emulate how a sophisticated “atas” drinking parlour might have been like in the past. The immaculate vibes of Jiu Zhuang won my heart. And even though the restaurant is not all that big, they’ve positioned their customers to be comfortably apart from one another, and that is always well appreciated.

As it’s name goes, you’re at a premium bar which offers a wide range of liquor - from Bai Jiu & Huang Jiu to a very extensive wine list. They have a massive range of whiskeys but also a unique selection of cocktails inspired by the four seasons (pictured). The cocktails were decent, but this is a definitely a bar for people who enjoy their hard liquor, be it neat or on the rocks. And when it comes to whiskey, you’ll be spoilt for choice here. Jiu Zhuang has a food menu as well, and no surprise it’s a Chinese menu, with a few dim sum options but also szechuan cuisine. And I’ll highly recommend one of my favourites got to be their Whisky Xiao Long Bao. So if you’re looking for a somewhere unique and quiet for a cosy date night, you can consider heading to this elegant hidden bar✨

Actually my favorite dish of the night! XLB was juicy and full of flavour, and the kick of whisky was refreshing and strong — and surprisingly works out seamlessly with the flavours of the soup. Truly living up to their name with this alcohol infused dish. Overall, a pretty nice Chinese restaurant to dine at with a good fare of both food and drinks. And not forgetting the old school, elusive charm this cosy restaurant has.

Pork trotter Bee Hoon here is braised to form a smooth, starchy gravy that’s both flavourful and aromatic. It was amazing at the start, but it inevitably gets too much — even for sharing. Plus there’s no meat that comes along with this, so make sure to get dishes to come along with it.

Not as fried as I expected it to be, with the batter being on the thinner side. The thinly coated batter may be a good thing, though I felt like it didn’t embody the element of la zi ji enough — the crispiness, greasiness, and spiciness of it all.

The Crispy Silver Hill Duck served with Homemade Crepes ($68.00 / Half) was the highlight of the meal. Not really knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by how succulent the meat was. Prepared with London duck sourced from Ireland's famed Silver Hill Farm, the dish resembles a large duck confit in my opinion. Marinated then deep-fried to a crisp, before being shredded like floss to be wrapped in the crepes and the accompanying condiments; the protein was very flavourful. Although you don’t get the glistening duck skin, you do get bits of crunch from the well-fried skin and it proved to be an interesting change from the usual Beijing Duck - a lighter alternative yet just as satisfying and substantial.

My go-to order at every dim sum restaurant, their Deep-fried Beancurd Skin Roll with Prawn ($6.80/ 3 pieces) delivered a superbly crisp-flakey exterior and the interior was wonderfully succulent. Served piping hot, the prawn filling was also nicely seasoned and sweet.

A nice spot for some dim sum brunch with the girls, Min Jiang at Dempsey was real fancy.

Complete with golden flakes, the Steamed Chicken with ‘Nai Bai’ and Dried Scallop Dumpling ($9.80/ 3 pieces) was savoury, plump, and tender. The vibrant jade-coloured skin was a tad thick and it got cold pretty quickly but the flavours were on point.

The Deep-fried ‘Golden Pear’ Curry Chicken with Mushrooms ($8.80/ 3 pieces) was fried to golden perfection. I liked that the crunchy batter wasn’t too thick and it didn’t feel greasy at all. The spice level was mild and it was overall pretty fragrant. Love the mini chocolate balls too as they added some crunchy decadence.
