Yet another place on my to-go list that is closing, so I had to quickly go try. Didn’t expect much given the mixed reviews but I thought it was not bad, enjoyed my lunch.

The chicken is lean yet soft, I can’t say it’s v tender but it’s not dry. I’ve had smoother chicken though. The skin of the chicken was v tasty, that’s where the marinade went.
Rice is p fragrant, could smell the aromatics like ginger/garlic infused into it. Texture was fine, it has a bite to it and rice grains were separated, yet not dry.

The sauce is viscous and sweet like honey ish and not salty?? Not what I expected soya sauce chicken’s sauce to taste like. Chilli is sour and q refreshing, with a mild spiciness. Soup is not v nice.

Overall I thought it was not bad and I would recommend you to try before it closes permanently! Portion was also quite reasonable for the price, place was well-ventilated. A shoutout to the servers who were v efficient and managed the queue well.

LFKN needs little introduction for serving soya sauce chicken since 1968. One thing I first noticed was they did not have a menu in-store. We went ahead to order their most popular soya sauce chicken, double mix of roast pork & char siew, dumpling soup and rice/noodles to go with the meats.

The tender and succulent soya sauce chicken was so soft and flavourful. I like how the braised sauce is thick and savoury yet not too overpowering. The roasted pork was done to a nice crisp with a good ratio of fat to meat while the dumpling soup turns out pretty average. I preferred noodles over rice for its al-dente springy bite without the strong alkaline taste as the oil rice somehow lacks fragrance.

By the time I reached at opening time 6.30pm, there was already 5 in the queue in front of me and an unknown number of customers who had pre-ordered. For the record, you can pre-order from 4pm but they only start to pack at around 6.30pm.

And so I waited for my turn. And waited and waited until 7.45pm! By then the queue behind me was about 13 customers long.

The rice was fluffy and nice, the roast chicken drumstick moist and tender. The chicken gizzard was quite normal though I did enjoy its crunchiness.

A bowl of soup was provided free and the clear soup tasted of chicken and ginger. The fried chicken wings were crispy from the coated batter which had little to no taste but the meat inside was well marinated and full of flavour. My only complaint besides the long wait was the chilli sauce which was not spicy nor tangy enough.

But will I go all the way to Toa Payoh again and brave another one hour wait? Maybe not.

The best part was the chicken but letdown by the rather dry and slightly undercooked rice. The char siew and roast pork belly were just forgettable with a porky taste. No crackling sound. The fried tofu was surprisingly pretty good.

Had to queue a bit for this plate of chicken wings but it was worth it! Da Ji Hainanese chicken rice at Toa Payoh sells regular chicken rice but most people queue to buy their chicken wings. Crispy and constantly freshly fried - at $1.40 for a full wing it was really worth it! They also give you extra crispy bits if you ask for it.

Have been around since the 1960s, Lee Fun Nam Kee has been around for over half a century.

The soya sauce chicken is definitely one of the best around in Singapore. They may even have been the originator of the Singapore style soya sauce chicken(according to their Web page)

Their chicken is soft and tender, even their chicken breast was soft and easy to eat. Their soya sauce is also just as awe-inspiring as their chicken.

The staff here are also very friendly and the place just have a very homely feel.

Sing Swee Kee at Seah Street has opened a new outlet at HDB Hub in Toa Payoh.

Some of us will probably be familiar with the famous chicken rice balls in Malacca. There are also a few stalls in Singapore which feature them as well. I have never been a fan of chicken rice balls because they are molded by handpressing the rice which kinda makes them dry yet mushy in terms of texture.

Sing Swee Kee takes chicken rice balls one step further by deep frying them. The rice balls are shattering crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Notwithstanding the deep-frying process, the fragrance of ginger and pandan ,and umami flavours of the chicken stock are retained. It is essentially a Singaporean "aracini", Italian rice balls which are stuffed, coated with bread crumbs and deep fried. Its a good interesting way to start a meal. It's a tad dry but maybe they can stuff shredded chicken in there in the future!

As for the chicken rice, it is simple and good. The roast chicken is moist and flavourful. The rice is alright but a tad dry. I prefer my chicken rice a little more "wet" and oily.

Don't look down on hawkers k. They can also innovate and create new dishes!

A decent plate of Hainanese chicken rice for only $3 in this neighbourhood. You know the people here approve it by just looking at the queue.
