Normal.

Throwback. Odd but besides Teochew porridge they sold bakes like these too.

Shocking price. Pork chop, tofu, leek.

Originally founded by Peh Lee Soon in 1997 but now operated by a different team since August 2018, they offer traditional Chinese Teochew dishes, with a range of 15 - 20 dishes freshly prepared daily.
.
Their plain rice porridge has a medium thin texture, with mild grainy sweet flavour.
.
The crisp Stir-Fried Water Spinach With Anchovies has bright vegetal savoury sweet bitter earthy salty flavour, while their signature Soy Braised Ginger Garlic Pork has a tender texture with robust salty savoury spice herbal flavour.
.
The soft wispy Braised Tofu Beancurd With Pork Floss has grainy salty sweet savoury notes, while the tender flaky Steamed Spanish Mackerel Fish With Ginger carries enticing sweet salty savoury spice flavour.

Kovan is popular for a few places of getting Teochew porridge and Soon Soon is consider a much hidden from the rest, as it located along Simon Road shophouses.

The original owner already sold their business much earlier and the new owner continues selling it.

I would say it is a much quieter compared to the rest but the price could be also very expensive to me.

The area around kovan used to have 3 very good teochew porridge. Sadly now only left 2.

Soon soon is definitely still around. I dare say, soon soon is the better teochew porridge of the remaining 2 in this area.

Chilli lala was good, spicy and sweet and eggy.

Minced pork was the best dish here. Flavourful and not so spicy.

The braised pork and duck was soft and tender.

And u can't go wrong with the hae bi hiam(dried shrimp), a must have here.

Overall 4.5/5 for me.

Can be quite Pricey here, so take note.

This Teochew establishment recently extended into late hours by starting lok lok. They even call themselves Midnight Diner lol. I love lok lok lah, but this isn't very Malaysian. The upside is they battered some of the items; the downside is they lost some flavour. For example, broccoli is usually fried directly, charring it with oil. Here the batter kept the flower quite raw. The Taiwan sausage was unusually dry. You can choose the seasoning for your sticks. They have sauces as well, but weak compared to other joints.

The highlight is the braised pork skin with peanut.
The skin is tender with the perfect chewy texture for me and HBH (heibihiam) that slighty spicy and tangy to pair with my porridge.
💰$14.6.

Curry chicken, hae bee hiam, braised pork belly, leek. Some signature dishes but nothing special. Curry chicken wasn't as good as I wished for.

The heibihiam (dried spicy shrimp), a dish not seen at every Teochew porridge store. It was fragrant with a slight spicy kick, and went very well with the porridge.

What are some of your must-orders? 😋

This is our go-to place whenever we crave for something sumptuous yet easy-on-the-wallet! Love how we are able to choose from a plethora of side dishes, and this spread amounted to only $14.

What is so alluring about Teochew porridge is the robust flavours of the dishes, juxtaposed with the piping hot plain congee. Each mouthful warmed us from the inside out!

Although we felt that no particular item stood out out from this spread, it is the ultimate culmination of everything on our bowls that makes the entire experience so delectable and tantalising.

Forget about Lola’s Cafe and come here for a more hearty meal instead. This teochew porridge is one of my family’s favourites. Some must orders: the lu rou (braised pork belly) - one of the softest, melt-in-your-mouth meats EVER, the duck, and surprisingly, the tofu in the bottom right of this photo. It has a slightly crispy “tau gwa” like skin, but the tofu inside is the silken type and it’s amazing with the slightly sweet sauce around it. My parents also love the otah because it has bigger fish chunks in it than normal.

Yayyy! Comforting teochew porridge for lunch with hubb..
🍚
The steamed "rabbit" fish $8.00 and pork trotter jelly (猪脚冻) $6.00 were so good!! Fish was very fresh. I must say nowadays not much places serve pork trotter jelly due to the efforts required in making. Also not forgetting the other must-order dishes: spicy minced pork and preserved veg. They paired really well with porridge when mixed in 😋 We enjoyed our $29.00 lunch.

And after a helluva crazy night at the Christmas party, maybe some Teochew Porridge can help soothe your hungover souls? Haha!!

Soon Soon Teochew Porridge is a well-known favourite among those who live in Kovan. Just simple, affordable, comfort food that tastes so homely, you can have it literally everyday.

My favourites on the table are the well-stewed cabbage and the ba chor. Terribly simple dishes to make, but it takes practice to achieve perfection. And to me, those dishes were perfect.

Soon Soon Teochew Porridge is located along Simon Road, just up the hill from Lola's. Nearest train station being Kovan MRT.

As you may know, there are several teochew porridge stalls around the vicinity but this is really a hidden gem. Food is not out-of-the-world status but definitely comforting for a cooling evening. The spread of food on the table, enough to feed 6 hungry-ians, comes up to only $44!

Last night's dinner with my fellow Burpple Tastemakers: My picks were the sweet & sour pork chop (couldn't get enough of the starchy gravy), minced pork in bean sauce, spicy otah with a good mackerel bite, and braised tau kee (beancurd skin). The tasteless fish cake was a miss for me, unfortunately. 3.5 munchies.
