Big Daddy Cake - Super Chocolatey with Nutella and Valrhona

1 of My favourite chocolate cakes, instantly, and this is my first time ordering and eating a cake from here.

The cake was moist and solid, not those airy type of cakes. Every bite was so decadent-ally good.

So rich and moist. The best combination for a chocolate cake.

Best to be eaten within 3 days.

Between the Nicholas Bittersweet Chocolate Cake, pictured at the top (4inch @ $32) and the Big Daddy Cupcake ($3.80), the cake & muffin were both of the same chocolate cake base.

Taste-wise:
- Big Daddy has a predominant Nutella taste
- Nicholas Cake is taste more chocolate and less sweet

If you like your cakes/cupcake moist, this is an acceptable cake. The shop also advertises that part of their proceeds goes toward a good cause.

Love them! It's really sweet (totally up my lane) but maybe too sweet for some. Love the chocolate the most, followed by salted caramel. Service could be a tad better though.

They named themselves the Ugly Cake Shop because their cakes does not contain any artificial ingredients and using buttercream instead of fondant. Hence, losing out on the beautifully looking cake that are usually full of sugar frosting and dyes.

Visited them with the main purpose to try their Sally (Peanut Butter & Dark Chocolate) cupcakes but they're unavailable during our visit 😭 Still, we decided to try the remaining available flavours.

Unfortunately while transporting them back, Big Daddy went for a 🎒 ride which turns out too ugly for a πŸ“· but that was also my favourite flavour among those three. I would say that their 🍰 are really moist and fluffy and not too 🍬, good enough for the young and old πŸ‘ͺ.

I also got to learn about other social initiatives in Singapore such as RunningHour (my friend tried walking blindfolded through a short obstacle course) and I'm Soul Inc, who uses a motion sensor music-making device Soundbeam to engage the elderly and disabled to create their own music. I tried it out - it's like having an invisible drum set, and the sounds/beats are formed by passing my hands over the sensors and tapping feet on the pedals, quite tough but intriguing for psychomotor-challenged me 😝
:
There was also a pop-up market, where I got to meet the folks from Ugly Cake Shop again! They've been sponsoring the nutrition fund of a school in Timor Leste since the start of their business, feeding the malnourished kids. What started as a small class with a handful of students has grown to a school of over 300 youths, hence a growing fund as well.

The festival may have ended, but the festivities for #DineForGood continue the rest of August. Ugly Cake Shop is offering 10% off all available cupcakes in store (except the 6pc box price)! Featured in the pic are Vicki (salted egg yolk custard), Jamie (earl grey with orange blossom whipped cream), and my favourite Carmen (lemon coconut meringue) cuz I'm a sucker for tart and sweet notes. Yes, Vicki comes with a flowing centre, heated before serving. But how are these prettily piped cupcakes 'ugly'? Well, there aren't any artificial colouring or fondant used in the cupcakes for "beautification", hence the contradictory name. Nah, give me natural and quality flavouring any time!

Thanks @Burpple for the invite, and @raiSEsg and @uglycakeshop for hosting the tasting! #Burpple

#FestivalForGood is happening tomorrow and the day after (20th & 21st August), and it's Singapore's first ever festival put together to celebrate and raise awareness of social enterprises! Social enterprises are unlike usual businesses as they work towards furthering their social cause and mission in a financially sustainable way.

With the motivation to provide financial support in helping to feed the children in Timor-Leste's Shallom School, Ugly Cake Shop was born! All the cakes here have stories behind them and are adorably and meaningfully named after people in the owners' lives. This here was the day's special, Desmond. Served warm, dig through the crisped top into the fluffy bottoms of the grilled butter cakes, together with the sourish yet delightfully sweet cherry compote and orange blossom cream. The elements on the plate married very nicely with a play on the variety of textures and flavours. This should be on the permanent menu! 😍

Your support to these social enterprises goes a long way and means a lot to them. Be #partofthegood simply by dining in!🍴 In the month of August at Ugly Cake Shop, indulge in their lovely cupcakes at 10% off any available flavours in shop (excluding the 6 piece box).

A huge thank you to @ttheuglycakeshop for the warm hospitality and @burpple for the kind invite! πŸ™†πŸ»

Nestled in Geylang Bahru, this humble bakery channels a part of their profits towards feeding the children in Shallom School, a school set up by Brazilian missionaries and supported by Agape Baptist Church in Singapore. Unlike its name, the bakes here are delicate and beautiful. Come for their legendary cupcakes like the Sally ($3.80) and the Vicki ($3.80). The former is a dense, dark chocolate cupcake frosted with a lusciously rich and creamy peanut butter frosting while the latter is a buttery cupcake with a surprise centre β€” flowy, golden molten salted egg yolk custard. While you're there, show some love to Desmond ($7.50) β€” a grilled butter cake with orange blossom cream and sour cherry compote that is best eaten on the spot. Some of the cupcake flavours have been upsized to whole cakes, so you can pay it forward and do good on your birthday!
Avg price: $5 per person

My favourite cupcake here in cake form: uber moist dark chocolate cake layers smeared with luscious peanut butter frosting in between!
I may be biased because I'm a sucker for anything peanut butter, but this combines two of my favourites in the dessert world. And I know it sounds diabetic, but it's actually not too sweet!

This humble bakery tucked away in Geylang Bahru doesn't get much attention, but it should. Unlike its name, the bakes here are delicate and beautiful. This shop is known for its legendary cupcakes, some of which have been upgraded into whole cakes. The Sally ($48) is a dense, dark chocolate cake frosted with a lusciously rich and creamy peanut butter frosting β€” sounds indulgent but it's actually not too sweet! You'll be glad to know that part of the bakery donates part of its profits towards feeding hungry children in Timor Leste. How's that for a truly meaningful celebration cake?

The abundance of peanut butter on the cake was so sinful but one needs to pamper themselves once in a while. The peanut butter taste in my opinion was acceptable and not too overwhelming! πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹

Was very pleased to find out that a cafΓ© has popped up in my neighbourhood. I’ve always loved their chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting (Sally) even during their online store days, and I think it’s still my favourite to date. Super moist and never too sweet! πŸ‘πŸ‘

Brightening up the sleepy Geylang Bahru estate is Ugly Cake Shop, a bakery cafe selling cupcakes and sliced cakes. They believe strongly in the use of natural ingredients over artificial ones such as fondant, gum paste or marzipan, even though the latter make for beautiful cakes. Be sure to try their cupcakes Sally (dark chocolate and peanut butter – our favourite!), Big Daddy (Valrhona nutella) and Sarah (carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and pecans)! Prices range from $3.80 to $4.50 for the cupcakes, while sliced cakes are priced at $7 each. 20% of the profits go to undernourished children in Timor Leste β€” all the more reason to show them big big love.

Sarah was comfortably moist while Sugar Daddy might be a more apt moniker for the only male in the house (is that why the other ladies buzz around him like flies?). My favourite is Sally, who has the most luxuriously smooth and soft peanut butter hairdo.

🍰 @uglycakeshop uses all natural ingredients even for their colourings! The cakes are all inspired by ppl around the owners, Lisa & Nicholas. My favourites are the lemon drizzle cake(not in photo) with the perfect balance of lemon and buttery-ness and the Vicki (liu sha cupcake) w it's molten salted egg lava centre. So many cakes to choose from that I forgot to eat the lemon coconut cake! πŸ˜… β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €For the whole of August,@uglycakeshop and other eateries will be participating in #Dineforgood where they will be raising funds for their chosen charities and you get to enjoy 10%off (or other discounts)! β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €Also join the #FestivalForGood at JTC Launchpad @ one-north on 20th Aug or at social enterprises island wide on 21st Aug.
