Tokyo Banana-inspired dessert by Chef Derek Cheong made with roasted banana ice cream, peanut butter ganache, peanut sponge and a drizzle of coffee caramel. It really does taste like Tokyo Banana!

The slow-cooked pork jowl glazed with miso is deliciously moist with a good ratio of meat and fats, served with tangy apple purรฉe and cabbage.

Plump Hokkaido scallop seared only on one side, accompanied with ragout made with ramson, fava bean, asparagus and kailan.

The creamy and earthy flavours from the greens goes well with the plump and pan-seared scallop.

Silky smooth steamed chawanmushi topped with crab, ikura, yuzu ponzu and wasabi oil. Its simply flavourful with umami overloaded in this dish from the flavours of crab meat to ikura and yuzu ponzu sauce.

Thereโ€™s a limited-time collaborative menu by Masterchef Singapore Season 2 winner, Chef Derek Cheong showcasing his stellar signatures from Twelve Flavours at Makan@JEN till 11 September 2022.

Starting off our dinner course we have the (complimentary) soft and fluffy kombu brioche with smoked miso butter. The salty taste of miso was prominent in the butter and I like how it goes with the warm and fluffy bun.

Chef Derek, who also runs his private dining concept Twelve Flavours, is putting together a stellar selection of signature and exclusive dishes in this menu through quality and unassuming ingredients. To go alongside the food, there is an option to pair the dishes with natural and classic wines from France, Portugal, and Australia.

For Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, diners can get to enjoy the 6-course wine pairing set dinner ($208++) starting off with a snack of kueh pie tee and grilled meatball before the first course of Chawanmushi which contains crab, topped with ikura and finished with some yuzu ponzu and wasabi to give it differing layers of flavours. Diving into the second course is the Hokkaido Scallop served on a blend of ramson, kalian and asparagus with textures from the fave beans.

The third course of Black Cod was beautifully executed and to pair with this delicate piece of fish is a beurre blanc cooked with razor clams and an additional top-up of caviar. The subsequent Pork Jowl is fork tender, served with slow-cooked cabbage ragu before a palate cleanser and finally the dessert of Roasted Banana. This final course features a homemade eggless roasted banana ice cream with thoughtful accoutrements of chocolate, peanut and coffee.

Hotel Jen's Xmas spread is quite a delight! Highlights for me are the pork knuckle, lobster risotto in parmesan cheese wheel, salmon sashimi, abalone. Drool inducing :) - $44 per pax for dinner during early bird promotion, with $25 add on for free flow wine and beers

This is pretty value if you manage to hit the timings with eatigo 50% off! The Garlic & Ginger Chicken Hor Fun came with multiple large chunks of tender chicken and loved the abundance of ingredients, but definitely lacking the wok hei char though it was still a pretty decent heart bowl of horfun. The Malay Chicken Rendang was very flavourful though we would have preferred it with beef, and the Stir Fried Vegetables were so so and Yellow Rice was not as flavourful as I expected. The true value comes with the appetizer and dessert buffet โœจโœจ Appetizer bar comes with a DIY rojak station (unlimited youtiao yummm), breads (really good to dip with the peanut sauce!!!) and cheese with a huge variety of oils, good variety of salad with nuts and bacon bits, gado gado with peanut sauce and some sides (achar etc). Dessert bar was definitely way more extensive with a good variety of pretty decent cakes (chocolate brownie (yum!!!, carrot cake (loved the citrusy oomph), pistachio (meh), strawberry mousse (meh)), cherry pie (this was more meh than it looked), coffee eclairs (yaaas) and a huge ice cream bar (which Iโ€™ll be back to try!!!). Drinks include ice lemon tea and infused water, as coffee and tea. They close the bars exactly at 1430 so grab your food quick if youโ€™re going with eatigo 50% at 1400 ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Every Thursday in July, Makan@Jen at Hotel Jen Orchard Gateway will be having an all-you-can-eat counter of fresh durian and durian desserts in addition to their already extensive seafood themed buffet spread. Some of the cultivars are hard-to-find including Golden Phoenix and Berkeley durians.

Despite being outdoors, if the weather is nice & cool like it was when I was there, it makes for a great experience with friends or family to bond over durians & a good meal. It's very thoughtful of Makan@Jen to provide gloves for those who don't wish to get their hands dirty as well - I definitely appreciated that.

You have 3 types of durians to choose from: Golden Phoenix, Little Swallow, Berkeley. Just get in line at the booth, & pick your durians & quantity. It will be served to you on a plate; being a buffet, it's free-flow but please don't waste the good stuff!
