Clean, crisp and quietly confident. The snapper had that golden skin that crackled just right, with tender flesh underneath. The yuzu miso was bright and punchy, enough to lift the dish without overpowering it. Asparagus added a fresh crunch that kept things light. Simple, balanced and easy to enjoy γ$36
The mafaldine had that perfect chewy bite with ruffled edges that clung onto all the flavour. It came slicked in garlicky chilli oil, more hum than heat but still aromatic. The crab was sweet and generous and the zucchini added a fresh crunch that broke up the richness nicely γ$28
Didnβt think cabbage could hit like this. Charred, smoky, tender and had those crispy bits that make you keep picking at it. The anchovies gave it that salty crunch and the asiago added this creamy, nutty layer that pulled everything together. A rare find that punches above its weight γ$17
Crunchy on the outside, crabby on the inside. These shiok little bites hit all the right notes. Rich, creamy and packed with actual crab, not filler. The miso mayoβs like the atas cousin of tartar sauce, itβs salty, smooth and addictive γ$15
This one came out looking simple, but itβs got layers. Hamachi was fresh and fatty, clean bite and no fishiness. Ponzu added a bright, citrusy lift, while the green chili slices sneak in a gentle heat that lingers just long enough to keep things interesting. Not overpowering, just enough to keep things interesting γ$12
Our experience here was perfect - delicious food set against a classy ambience and warm lights. But that's not to say that the prices are high - the dishes here are really worth the quality plus the HH oysters and drinks are so so affordable! We had 6 oysters at only $14 and they were so delicious. The server will even take the time to explain their origins and flavour profiles if you wish. The Yuzu Caipiroska (HH $15) packed a double punch of booziness and sourness, but in a good way!
On to the food, we started with the Crab Croquettes ($15 for 3 pcs). Exterior was well-crisp without any heavy greasiness, and the insides were warm and oozing with potatoes and flakes of crab meat. My partner had a funny comment though, that if she ate this without knowing, she would have thought that the filling was the Ayam brand salmon mayo spread. I...agreed.
Next, we had the Hispi cabbage ($17) which unfortunately was the letdown of the meal. We really wanted to like this, but the flavours of the baby anchovy and asiago cheese didn't really gel well with the cabbage. The cabbage sweetness should be more pronounced but unfortunately I could not appreciate much of it.
However, the star of the show was hands-down the Crab Zucchini Pasta ($28). So buttery, rich, and flavourful, the pasta with the sauce alone was already so damn delicious. Completing the dish were the generous chunks of sweet crab meat as well as slices of zucchini adding a touch of freshness. We loved this.
Food, service, and vibes were all amazing. I will definitely be back.
Most expensive but also allegedly one of the more notable item on the menu as recommended by their staff was the Kurobuta Pork Chop. The pork chop had a nice sear and decent tenderness, but I thought it was lacking a tad bit in its juiciness. I quite enjoyed this Japanese inspired dish for its sesame miso jus, giving just that slight tinge of sweetness and umami combination. The pork crackling garnish was a nice addition. Kale was also a nice accompaniment to cleanse your palate with every piece of meat. A nice option if you arenβt on a budget, but I do think itβs slightly pricey for what it was.

Lightly battered squid with a dash of seaweed powder. Especially enjoyed it because it was not too oily nor too heavy. And the garlic dip was an extremely delightful complement for this snack.

Brioche rolls for $10!!!!???? Humpback can just take my money because this was so good. This came freshly baked out of the oven - warm, fluffy, and soft. With that slight crisp texture to give that light crunch. The kombu butter was savoury, and the layers to the flavour when smothered on the bread was to die for. Zero regrets choosing this carb loaded appetiser to start the meal - and this is coming from someone who isnβt the slightest fan of bread.

The French Toast is the most expensive breakfast item on Tong Ah's menu.
I will probably order this dish rather than the kaya toast because they are topped with a couple dollops of kaya and slices of butter which allow you to better taste the kaya.
The French Toast itself is decent with a nice crepe-like layer of egg coating the bread but there is (of course) not going to be enough kaya or butter to spread on all of the French Toast.
I hate to say so but Tong Ah's horribly overpriced. Yes, rental is mad and inflation is painful but Tong Ah does its food no justice with how they try to cut corners and save costs.
I personally prefer the 'non-traditional' crispy thin kaya toast for its wafer-like crunchy texture.
I cannot recall if they charge extra for butter with their kaya toast but the interesting thing is that they would cut it into thin slices and place it in a bowl of ice water to keep it cold and ensure that it keeps its form and does not melt completely when it is served. A lovely touch but my gripe is that the thin stripe of butter was so small that it was as thin as (and if not thinner) than the thin toast itself and left me thoroughly dissatisfied.
I can't help but feel that I'm paying more for the old school atmosphere than for the food itself, seeing how they seem to 'stinge' on their ingredients...
